P & O

Successive governments have favoured 'flexibility in the labour market.' That means minimum regulation.
In most countries in Europe it is difficult and costly to sack people. In the UK it isn't. This is a political choice.

BTW this is why many companies closed their factories here and concentrated production in the EU. It was the less costly option.

The solution is to change the politics. BTW, Labour isn't 'left' enough to do this. They basically agree with the 'flexibility' concept.
 
I've never seen such a cluster fuck of an interview ever. The DP world CEO said it wasn't up to them P&O stand alone, then said they met and agreed it last year. The transport secretary knew about it in November and then Hebblethwaitehe said, yes they had agreements in place to consult the unions but knew no union would agree to such proposals so fucking ignored them! He and others should be jailed. Tip of the iceberg this. He's lying about wages too, half are on less than £5 an hour

If you are "missing it" its because you don't want to see it - the CEO of P&O's performance before the select committee this morning tells you all you need to see and not miss

The guy is a piece of shit.
However if I was given the choice of £30K and gagging order or £20k with no gagging order then I'd be taking my own gag (oo er missus) and picking up the larger cheque unless I knew other local jobs were available.
They are using the desperation of the workforce (which P&O themselves created) to do a bit of wriggling.
 
Just heard that **** of a CEO on LBC.

£350k a year plus bonuses he's on, and he has said he "can't answer" whether he'll accept his bonus or not.

Meanwhile he's sacked all the staff and is paying their replacement agent staff below the minimum wage as they operate in international waters and aren't subject to the British minimum wage law.

Absolute disgrace - not even Amazon or Mike Ashley treat their workers like that

I'd take the money and go to the papers anyway if it were me. P&O won't take legal action, it's too much of another PR disaster.

And/or do a deal with one of the tabloids to get them to cover any potential legal fees.

What else can employees say to incriminate P&O further? If nothing, take as much money as poss.
 
Terrible what’s happened to the employees The sad fact is, if the Company are backed in to a corner they will put P&O in to liquidation and leave the tax payer to pick up the redundancy bill. All the jobs will be lost then. Don’t know what the proper solution is if it’s unviable and losing money.

I caught a bit on the yellow ticker about him proudly saying the average wage being paid was £5 odd - what a clown. But, and I do hate to draw distinctions, the CEO of P&O isn’t the government, so not sure why you would conflate his performance to them?

What will be interesting is if they do take them to court and the government wins what happens to the money they fine them. By rights it should go to these workers but you can almost guarantee it won’t. And thats wrong. They deserve justice and recompense for both loss of earnings between now and whenever and to cover the stress.

as I say - some just don't want to see it.

As for the jobs - they are gone now - never to return. He made it clear that if it was to be insisted they rehire the crews P&O Ferries would be closed down immediately. I think the best plan of action is for the 800 to take the money and run and the organised labour in the ports to refuse to handle any P&O vessel - shut them down anyway

And some just want to blame the government because it’s raining. No one has told me what I’ve missed that the government have done wrong here. You’ve just posted a video of the CEO of P&O who isn’t in government and then promptly told me I’m too blinkered to see this is what the government have done wrong. It’s a different debating technique I’ll give you that.

Did he actually say they’d shut P&O down if forced to rehire? Jesus. The sacked workers can take the package (£46k on average I think he said but I heard elsewhere it was 6 months or so so about 17-20k?) if they want and honestly I can’t imagine they would want to work for them again anyway; although I’m not sure how easy getting jobs in this industry are to come by - not very I would have thought. P&O can then be fined into oblivion by the government. I’ve no issue whatsoever with that outcome.
