Etihad Atmosphere - 2021/22

I was in SS3 and I thought the lads further up than us made a good fist of trying to get it going. Definitely think the game dulled the crowd. I was next to their fans and there was some decent arguments going on between the two sets of fans, coupled with cigs being flicked, drinks thrown etc. There were patches of singing by City fans

I agree. Sometimes I don’t understand the chants coming from the south stand. We go 1-0 up and I often hear the Dzeko song. Rarely ever hear the songs people will join in with. Hey Jude for example.

no doubt I will get criticised, but as you say they lead the ground. Song choice has a big impact on that
Every singing section in every stadium in the world is every stadium’s front-man for atmosphere. They are who the rest of every stadium in the world looks to to lead the atmosphere.

But I don’t think a lot of people in our singing section understand that, and some don’t care and are just there for a sing and a laugh within their own little section and aren’t bothered about the rest of the ground. That’s up to them as well, it’s not like they’re under contract to make sure the whole stadium is singing. But it will always be the case in every stadium that the singing section leads the atmosphere.

All the quick burst-y clap-along awayday chants might sound good in the singing section, but they never catch on around the stadium. “Edin Džeko”, “Empty Seats At Home” (when we’re at home in a full stadium?), and a number of others, have never caught on around the stadium, and they certainly won’t in a tense 0-0.

At 0-0, even any sort of individual player songs are never going to catch on around the stadium… we have to get the CITY songs going more, and we need to get a load of new ones! Positive, uplifting, CITY songs.

Not songs about players, not songs about United or Scousers, not songs taking the piss out of ourselves, not the quick burst-y clap-along awayday chants… all those kind of songs are great to have in the back catalogue but should just be extra songs to add to a City set list for when we’re 4-0 up to add to our core City chants. But they’ve become the singing section’s core chants.

City songs have always been the songs that have caught on around the stadium, but we sing fewer and fewer of them all the time. Some have completely disappeared from our set list.

Hey Jude
City, We’re From Manchester
City ’Til I Die
We All Follow Man City, Over Land And Sea
Oh When The Blues Go Marching In
We’re The Pride Of Manchester
Even “We Live You City” is seldom sung (compared to Edin Dzeko!)
And many many more…

There are a number of them that we haven’t sung for so long that it’s take a few months of reintroducing them before the stadium gets used to singing them again. When they should be the core songs of the set list every week!

And we should be adding to these with new City chants n’all.

One thing I’ve never understood is that we are the one and only Centurions in English football history, yet we haven’t got a single song about it. Surely even something simple like “Centurions Centurions ole ole ole” (to the “Championes” chant) is something we should have been proudly belting out for the last four years?!

Middle class fanbase waiting to be entertained. That’s the Champions’ League group stages and early knockout rounds. Eventually these half n half scalf-wearing foreign wankers get binned off by the ‘loyal’ City fans for the latter stages.
I love the idea that the real City fans have only ever seen one CL home game in their entire lives because we've only had one semi final where fans were in the ground.

I enjoyed last night , thought the lads were ultra professional. As a crowd we were meh but that was down to the type of game. I didnt get animated by our pattern of play , exacerbated by the low life offerings of Athletico. I didn't expect the crowd to be rocking and it wasn't , so what we won.

Sunday will be different .

The fact of the matter is that an extremely large number of City fans just do not get exited about the Champions League (stupid title).

Now the Premier League is a different matter, the atmosphere against our nearest and not so dearest a week or two back was exceptional.

Quite hard to get excited about last nights game to be honest, it was tedious as fuck.

If only the people who come on here moaning about the atmosphere sang up last night, it would have created a better atmosphere than we actually got.

There was a pissed up French, AC Milan fan, sat behind me in 209 who thought it was funny that I sang on my own. To his credit he joined in with a few chants / songs.

Don’t expect our atmosphere to be any better at the weekend unless you sing our songs. I reckon most of the people who complain about the atmosphere only get behind the lads if we are 2 goals up with 5 minutes to play.
The bad thing about this thread mate, is that I think the contributors to this thread are all singers who are all frustrated with the atmosphere but the people we need to read this stuff aren’t the ones on this thread.

But it’s excuse after excuse.

Early in the season it was because a game kicked off at 12:30 on a Saturday afternoon so the atmosphere was shit.
Another was because it was a night match near Christmas and the traffic was bad so the atmosphere was shit.
Another was because we won 5-0 and it was easy so the atmosphere was shit.
Another was because it was a tense 0-0 so the atmosphere was shit.
Another was because we went 4-0 up very quickly so for the rest of the game the atmosphere was shit, and couldn’t raise it again because the opposition scored 3 quick goals and it made us nervous.
Another was because it was freezing so the atmosphere was shit.
Now it’s because the game was tedious so the atmosphere was shit.

These tense 0-0s are when the team need us most. It’s not about how entertained we are.

Some good points as always. Disagree about Empty seats at home though - that's a chant that can be maintained and can get loads of fans joining in. Not sure about the reference to a full stadium either - shall we only sing it when there are empty seats?!!

The atmosphere wasn't great but I've heard plenty worse on CL nights. Also, and it's probably an acoustics issue, but I could hardly hear their fans at all in block 115.

Not forgetting, “you can’t sing a song with Edin Dzeko’s name on it”.

Hehe, nope, it works either way, literally, or better still ironically...

Some supporters don't like monotonous singing all game? I'm probably one of the most vocal people around me, but it's usually due to an outburst of rage like a 'fuck off' or 'come on City'.

On the other hand, I don't like singing that much as I'm focused on the game. I dunno, I think the whole 'we need singing all game' is overblown.

I’ve said many times that atmosphere is not always about singing. We barely sung any songs all game in that 2019 Liverpool 2-1 win, but it was the most intense atmosphere we’ve had since the 2012 United 1-0 win.

All the boos, whistles, “fuck off”s, “go on”s, “ooooohh”s at the close misses, “aaaaaahhhh”s at their misses etc. are also what makes an atmosphere great.

South Level 3 next to the away fans was alright last night, nothing spectacular but nowhere near as bad as some on here are making out. If all the moaning fuckers on here joined in we'd have the best atmosphere in the country.

The Atletico fans were loud next to us aswell drowned some of our songs out which they obviously will do if only 314 are signing and not the rest of the third tier

Then i've got us covered :P

It’s not that we can’t, of course we can. It’s that people don’t.

I don’t remember that song ever spreading around the stadium.

I cant get my head round the number of songs for former players sung when the likes of Walker/Stones/Gundogan/Mahrez/Foden etc.. don't get a mention.

I seem to be one of few that thought the atmosphere was better than expected and couldnt hear the madrid fans ( only thing i recall about them was the nazi salutes ). Compared to some UCL games it was ok.

I was right at the back of 115 so could not hear madrid fans, spent last 5 mins of game near the front of 115 so i could hear them then, shows how the noise travels.

First 15 mins in 114 / 115 / 116 was better than a lot of the prem games, there where a lot of people bunched in seats, stewards had dropped the check points for tickets ! After about 15 mins it went a bit quite, just the odd song.

When we scored there was a 15 minute spell of excellent singing, literally 3 or 4 full blocks going for it, you could say arms up in the air clapping, one song at once. Shows singers are there they just cant be arsed for large parts of the game.

All the excuses in the world, if you are a singer in that section and you dont sing then we arent going to have the best of atmospheres.

There is a lack of chants, I am saying chants not the carefully written player SONGs. We cant get going the new john stones or zinch or diaz song. We need good hard core chants, with clapping. It wont change though, we will always have a new song every week about a player that only a small handful of people know the words to. We just arent getting to grip with longer songs / chants that we can repeat repeat repeat for everybody to copy.

I was 10 euros up as well after all the coins that came over from them after we scored ha ha
