Liverpool FA Cup s/f (N) | Post Match Thread

My sole criticism of Pep today is his loyalty to Steffen. Ederson's ability on the ball is unrivalled and Liverpool, similar to Southampton last round, knew they could press aggressively with him in goal. It's a dire error.

Not sure why hasn't been made of the absurd scheduling this week. Had Liverpool been presented with a competitive game midweek, both teams would've started with similarly weakened sides. Their starting core were sat on the bench (at Anfield) & ours played an intense 100 plus mins, haven't been home & are then expected to play at full bore again. It isn't possible. We'll see how they fare on Tuesday when they have to play a 'stronger' opponent and unlikely to be able to rest their starters today.

If we want to walk away with the big prizes, the finishing has to improve immediately. That chance for Jesus at 1-3 had to go in. We created enough to beat them last Sunday too. The games against Real & some of our upcoming opponents are going to be tight.

I'm disappointed but the fight & drive shown in the second half reassured me. Brighton will be a big test on Wednesday, we all need to be behind the players.
I am not convinced that a keeper who can chip a ball to a full back on the half way line is as much of an asset as the media makes out. Ederson, undoubtedly good on the ball has a great ball over the top in him. That opportunity rarely presents itself. What does this mean = we have Steffan tryihg to pass out from the back and as we have seen from the S'oton game and today its again its not much of an advantage - better ball chipped to a full back maybe! But, it's not his game. In reality even if he did improve this aspect we will not gain much of advantage. Better to let him clear his lines as a normal keeper would do.

Do they have a minute's silence for Heysel?
I half agree with you in terms of we’re all hypercritices. 15 years ago most City fans would be slagging utd for the same classy behaviour. Planes at the ready for utd’s next resurgence.

I wish we had this guy at his prime now playing for City. the pressing, the way he was keeping the ball, was very hard to tackle him or nick the ball from him. pressed for 90 minutes if it was needed, and did score fair share of goals, many of long shot goals included. was a good pen taker as well. and was dropping deep a lot probably would have fit this false 9 stuff like a glove for Pep.

I miss the days a bit when we had him and Kun and Dzeko and Balo at the same time. Even mental Balotelli was a killer finisher compared to when Jesus or Sterling comes across a big chance.

Name the top, world class defensive midfielder we get for what we paid for Rodri.
Rodri bossed the midfield last weekend.

I'm not paid to know every midfielder in Europe.

My point wasn't really about Rodri. It was the other lot getting 3 relatively cheap players who fitted into the side immediately, without needing a year to bed in or other players needed to help them do their job and all for the price of Grealish.

I wish we could do the same. We have the best manager in Pep yet each season the club is making some mistakes in the window, not getting in players leaving us with no options, not getting backup so when a player is out we have no one to replace, not replacing such as letting Fern grow old without a replacement or letting Sane and Torres leave with no replacement. Also bringing in forward players that almost always need a year before they start doing anything.

The club keeps expecting Pep to work miracles. Thankfully for us he has.

Shit performance today, can't pick a motm everybody off it. First half was a complete disgrace and Pep must've given them a right bollocking. Second half slightly better but still pretty wank. Liverpool fans were pretty sound today, maybe because there weren't many true scousers present. Must win against Brighton now, no fucking excuses
Liverpool fan base is in the main home counties, Wales and SW England, Talking to one on the tube today before the game.. so where are you from? Reading he said.. i replied you had a good team a few years back.. he replied ''yeah i went a few times then. After we dropped down.. Liverpool all the way!'' No shame...I mean their fan base is made up mostly by people who have just picked a winning side because its easier! says a lot about their club. I also said to a few that i think we'd lose today ..they said ''why buy a ticket then?'' they really don't have many true football fans supporting them

He's 22 and we don't think he's good enough for our first team yet- he can't be that highly rated.

I'll be very surprised if he gets much game time outside of cup games, if that.

Coming from the Brazilian league at age 22 to the Premier League will be a huge step up to what he's faced before.

Everything about that match; selection, energy levels, commitment, has to be seen in the context of Wednesday night. It was a bruising exhausting battle and evey player will have been suffering the after effects. The very last thing they would want a few days later is a semi final against Liverpool.

By way of contrast, Liverpool players had a rest and a stroll in the park.

The other thing weighing on the team is priorities. At this stage in the season, pragmatism is required. The FA cup is NOT top priority.

IF City go on to win the league and maybe the champs league it was absolutely the correct approach to this game

Looking forward to Brighton and Real Madrid with a fit, refreshed squad already. And one less distraction
Most sensible post I've read all day. Mind you, there haven't been many...

In his prime he would have been immense in this Pep side.

Fuck me, fans are being bastardised for "spoiling" the minute's silence. Imagine paying £200 plus for the pleasure, entering the arena chanting city not knowing there's a minute's silence and then all of a sudden you are given pelters.

Always happens with minute's silences, just put an end to them.

Kelleher, gomez, konate, matip, tsimikas, milner, Thiago, Jones, minamino, Salah, mane. that's about their equivalent of the team we sent out against their best 11. Imagine that against something like ederson walker cancelo stones laporte Rodri Bernardo kdb foden mahrez jesus. That game doesn't end up 3-2.

The "Pep throws away the FA cup every year" comments can fuck right off. He has to manage the schedule he has as it comes. he's not responsible for giving us the dippers twice either side of atletico twice in the space of about 10 days. He's set this as the lowest priority, surely nobody would disagree with that. If we had the benfica games the dippers had, we put out a much stronger team, we didn't, so he does what he has to and accepts the consequences of putting it bottom of the priorities list. Pep plays it right every year, he gets us into strong positions come the end of the season, circumstances just means we have to prioritise sometimes.

I'm amazed at some of the responses defending pep and the team selection today, trying to spin positives on a complete and utter shitshow. The fact is he's monumentally messed up yet another game of huge magnitude and in doing so has given Liverpool an extra step towards a quadruple.. something that sickens me to say. Seen someone say it 'was a respectable scoreline' are we Norwich or something? Another saying 'one less distraction' distraction to what exactly? Win today and its one more game? Why not just play u18s at Cheltenham back in January? Really dont get why pep is always immune to criticism, especially in these one off high pressure games in which there seems to be a recurring theme of him going against what has made his city teams tick and being stubborn and this costing city time and time again.
