I don’t think we would want to sign a player that needs to hear that we wouldn’t stand on his way if he wanted to leave, let alone mentioning any specific club. The same way this vinculantismo theory nonsense that claims that Real Madrid has an agreement that allows them to match any offer and if they do, the player can’t go anywhere else. Mind you, this theory is an Internet bullshit that no one even remotely serious in Madrid touches, but I’m just bringing it up to say that in a scenario like that there’s no way we would even start a negotiation also

Chelsea can't offer him anything because of the sanctions. Now, reportedly each remaining bidder has made extending his contract a top priority, but in this weird in between period where we effectively have no owners, he can't be offered a new contract. He wants to stay, but his agent is doing what he's supposed to do and that's to court attention and get him as many offers as possible. It's why I say if we lose him it's because the timing didn't align for us.

Currently the timeline for the ownership situation is mid-May at the latest. If we have new owners by then, there's a good chance he stays. If there is a further delay in the process, I can imagine he might not want to chance it and lose the offer from Real Madrid.

Sticky situation with these sanctions.

Chelsea were willing to let him go when Lampard was here. His form took a turn for the better under Tuchel's guidance. Hence why he has all the leverage now. Contract talks only started last summer but as I said, both parties were far apart in what was an acceptable wage package. In Jan/Feb there were reports that an agreement could be found and that Rudiger actually didn't want to move out of London, and that a new deal could be agreed before the end of the season. Then the sanctions come down and everything came to a standstill.

Now I’m curious. They say Christian Falk came up with this “1 year” nonsense but I can’t find it anywhere. Spanish newspapers (Madrid and Barcelona) have a bizarre habit of making wild claims using the name of journalists from elsewhere, and when they publicly call out the bullshit, they delete or edit the story
