Kalvin Phillips | Joins City on a 6-year deal

Forget tonight's game. For me, Phillips is a good solid player and normally tackles and passes well. But I don't think he has the top quality necessary to be an important player for our team. City are full of brilliant players from KDB to Bernardo and the rest and this is why we are one of the best teams in the world. Any new player that we sign must also be absolute top quality (Haaland) and unfortunately Phillips is not a top top player. A player in his position also needs to be very quick around the pitch...and he certainly isn't. Would be a good squad player and the best of luck to him if we sign him.

See the people who don't rate Phillips are wanking themselves silly and the usual pile on fest has begun. Quite funny how the same people who are happy to disregard his performance in an England shirt over the last year or two, for which he won Englands player of the year, are then happy to use a performance in an England shirt as evidence why he’s a pub footballer at best and should be nowhere the club. If only our recruitment department judged players off of one game, we’d of dodge the massive bullets that are Stones and Walker, never would of gone for Kane and would almost certainly never be interested in Bellingham and James. End of the day the pool from which we can buy players from is small, it becomes even smaller when looking for a CDM in peps team, it then becomes minuscule when looking for a player who can play it but is happy to play second fiddle to Rodri. Is Phillips overpriced at the reported (can’t stress this enough) fee? Yes, but who cares less if we go on to win trophies again next year and it allows Rodri some vital rest during the season. To also suggest a young kid can come in a do a job in what is probably the most important position in a pep team after no real senior football is laughable. We’re signing someone for that position and whether that be Phillips or somebody else I have every faith they’ll improve our squad and if they are bang average, Pep is Pep and will polish the turd into something good enough anyway.

PS. We’ve just signed Erling fucking Haaland, regardless of who we sign after this we’ve smashed this window.
You can put lipstick on a pig but it’s still a pig :)

what does it say that the only pro phillips arguments here that people can muster are :

a. he's PL proven
b. we should trust pep if he wants him
c. he's at the very least okay
d. come on, southgate's a crap manager
e. pep's a good manager and will improve him
f. who else is out there?

doesn't fill you with confidence, does it?

£60mill for a squad player and that’s ok is it. Ridiculous amount to pay for a bang average player

I hope I’m proved wrong but at the moment I can’t see this being anything but a complete joke of a signing and at £60mill plus wages. We bought Haaland for less, just let that sink in WE BOUGHT HAALAND FOR LESS
You don’t need to see it , you just need to trust the club and the people that built the team we have now. Only an idiot wouldn’t trust them after the last few years. Haaland is irrelevant we all know he isn’t a £50 mill player.

I’m refraining from commenting tonight because as we say in Brazil, it would be like kicking a dead dog. Sometimes nothing needs to be said

Perfectly entitled to not rate a player, just often find it runs past that and becomes quite irrational, with no real back up as to why they don’t rate him. Which is fine, I personally haven’t watched enough of Phillips to want to push my view on him onto others but I can almost guarantee a lot of the people who don’t rate him also haven’t watched him enough to have such strong views. People seem to want to die by that opinion and will not change it no matter what. All seems similar to Grealish in that sense. The above might not apply to you in the slightest, I’m too lazy to go back and see your view on him, was more just a generalisation. Just think there’s little room for healthy debate on players, either have to think he’s a pub player or word class.

Don’t think I’ve been more on the fence about a signing. I’m seizing on the positive comments about passing range, pressing and City’s and Pep’s record with players but I ask myself would I care if the dippers or rags signed him. I’d get over it soon enough.
That second sentence has nailed it for me mate. If Liverpool signed him I wouldn't bat an eyelid. We can do so much better.

Seen plenty of this guy and at no stage have I thought he was City quality. However, I've seen plenty of blues banging the drum for this potential signing (after they heard we were linked with him) so I thought I'd take another close look at him tonight against a mediocre Hungary side. My opinion that he's a bang average plodder is unchanged.

I find it quite odd seeing people blame Southgate and his tactics for Phillips poor performance. If it wasn’t for Southgate being a negative, boring, out-of-his-depth manager, you would never have seen Phillips in an England shirt to begin with.

Phillips is a bang-average, run of the mill English midfielder. Everyone should know it because we have seen plenty of them over the years.

He will come to City and I’m sure he will do ok, it’s very rare these days for City signings to do anything else because the team as a whole is so good. I just don’t think you pay a premium price for this and it seems that is exactly what we are going to do.

Bellingham was shit tonight and you are looking at £100m for him.

At least there were moments of quality from Bellingham.

The worrying thing about the performance from Phillips is that he was playing as a single pivot, as Rodri does, at the performance was a total contrast.

There was no composure on the ball, he wasn’t making himself available for the pass and he buckled under pressure from the opposition. His passing was either a long punt forward or a backwards pass, there was very little inbetween.

It doesn’t mean he’s a bad player or cannot learn the Rodri role, but it wasn’t an encouraging performance, especially with the fees being banded about.

Phillips was poor tonight, but I am trusting our scouting team and Pep on this one.
