People concerned about the lone DM thing, he’s actually played his best football for us as that and we’ve felt he’s lost some form when Marsch came in and started playing a double pivot.

You’re a Leeds fan and have just posted that last season he was average at best. Plenty on here agree that he is just an average player and don’t care at all who he plays for.
Tbf everything about last season was horrible for us. A lot of good players would probably have struggled.

Bielsa ball is a madness though. It’s not about positioning, it’s about man v man all over the pitch and sprints off the ball.

Pepball is far more about positioning and specific pressing.

Is Phillips able to change his approach?

100% correct. Most successful teams over the years have had their own versions of Akes, or Phillips. There is nothing wrong with having these types of players in the squad, playing 10-15 games a season. It’s just that most teams didn’t/don’t pay a combined £100m for them.

The difference for me is that I rated Ake when he was at Bournemouth and, although I understood people questioning his price, I didn't care because I could see his quality.

Speaking only for myself, it's got nothing to do with him playing for Leeds or being shit for England tonight but I don't see it with him.

He's an alright player and it's true that we can't just drop £100m on a world class holding mid just to rotate him with the one we've already got but we've just seen how long it's taken Rodri to get fully into his stride and he's twice the player. Take that bedding in period and give him less minutes and we could be looking at a couple of years before he gets going.

We've just seen it happen with Ake. The guy struggled for a consistent run of appearances and it showed every time he started; he looked nervous and out of place. This is a guy who was a Premier League regular and was considered by many Bournemouth fans to be their best ever player.

To Leeds and their fans, he's probably worth well over £60m. For us, it just seems bizarre. That's Rodri/ Dias/ Mahrez territory and he's simply nowhere near that level. I'd definitely take a bet on that if there was any real way of quantifying it.

If Pep wants him and the club are happy to throw that kind of money to fill that role then so be it but I don't think anyone can really blame people for scratching their heads and wondering why.

Tbf the transfer market doesn’t make sense anymore. I’d want £60m+ because of what I’ve seen other English players go for (White £50m, Maguire £80m, Grealish £100m) but yet as you’ve pointed out you’ve managed to acquire genuine world class talent for £60m.

Mate many thanks for taking the bet and even more so for at least showing some bottle.
My bet is that should we sign the lad (this coming season) then I honestly believe that with his help, we will win some major trophies, PL CL and/or FA Cup based on him replacing him Rodders over a period of time.My proposal is over the next 2 years.
I`m open to suggestions from yourself and it will be a subjective case as to how we/us define a "great signing" (in my eyes) so lets agree as to the bet.
I’ll be happy to do it mate. As someone else posted, not easy to quantify what success will be though. I’m sure we will win trophies. We’ve definitely improved if we sign him because he’s replacing Fernandinho. If you’ve read my posts on Phillips, I’m also on the fence as to whether he’ll be a success or not, given the likely price, but if you can come up with something appropriate…

Best way is via a PM mate.
Cheers.

Solid player but vastly overrated and no doubt will be massively overpriced.
Not sure at all about this one but I trust our management to know better and do the right thing…..which will hopefully be to stay the fuck away at the sort of money being talked about.

this might be a bit controversial, but where does the notion that our recruitment team is incapable of making mistakes come from?

I trust them and they are full of very intelligent people. But they are human. they may very well be misjudging a given situation, like any other human. That doesn't mean I don't have trust in them, but I also don't have blind and cult like belief in them that I would classify ANY attempt to see an opinion different from them disrespectful or wrong, and I genuinely don't understand why some people here take offense to that.

It's the same team that spent 100 million on grealish, and I STILL think that was the wrong idea. It's the same team that brought mendy, look how that turned out.

On the balance they are extremely good at what they do and almost always get it right. But never in a million years would they always get it 100%, and I think this is one of those times. Simple.

If the rags signed him for £60m I would piss myself laughing.
I don’t think anyone is suggesting the club does not make transfer mistakes. Show me a team who gets it right all of the time?

What I gauge our success on is the amount of trophies won and the ability to compete each year. Of course we will buy the odd dud here and there.

Once he is signed and starts to perform in our team a lot of posters will be eating humble pie.

Kane & Grealish transfer all over again. Insert English name and the board does not want said player.
