So we play the player that got in the Premier league team of the season at left back. A new left back whoever it was wouldn't immediately get in the starting 11 just like Philips will have to bide his time for his chance. If we haven't signed anyone by the 2nd September then maybe you have a point.

We wanted him, chased all summer, why? For one bid we made which was very low. We may get someone else, especially after seeing cancelo weekend I think cucurella would have played a lot with cancelo and walker rotating a bit more. Playing a player who can’t defend at left back, who is right footed and upsets the balance at times won’t be our first choice should we sign a proper left back

We are not after gomez and gaya. Our next target will be sosa and grimaldo. Grimaldo is cheaper. If we get them for say 25M we can sell them for 50-55M like we did Ferran and get a lot of profit. If you buy for 50M , you are pretty much reaching the ceiling already

That’s the wrong argument to make IMO.

Cancelo is a top class LB and I don’t think anyone should have any worries with him playing there.

The issue is the lack of depth at full back. As it currently stands, we are an injury or suspension away from playing an unproven kid or a player out of position at full back. And with Walker getting towards the end of his careers, it’s not an ideal scenario.

I understand that Stones can play RB and Ake/Laporte LB but no one can seriously suggest that we look a stronger, more fluid side with them playing there.

Fair enough but that doesn‘t make a marginal second choice new LB a disaster.

We also have a great kid coming through. OK, not ready yet but could well be part of the future jigsaw.

I went to buy a car priced at £7250. . I offered £6500 because it was exactly what I needed. The dealer said offer £7249.99 and you still can’t have it because you won’t find anything for the same price and condition to match . I checked up and he was right - so I paid up and had 3 years very good motoring.Did I fret about the extra £750 - not one bit.

Personally I think we acted like arseholes on this.

Three years down the track you go to buy another car worth £7250, and the dealer adds another £2k to the price tag because he knows you'll pay what he wants.

I totally agree with you. The last thing is have a knee jerk reaction buy someone just for the sake of it and making a huge mistake in the process.

Zinchenko isn't just a LB though. You're selling a quality international midfield player that can also cover at LB.
