Keir Starmer

I don’t think anyone can say for sure why it’s happening 396% more than France etc.

I‘m not really sure how it can have spiralled so fast without regulation.

It’s happening because we have a system that is essentially price fixing with literally zero competition and OFGEM literally enforcing the price rises every 3 months for them now.

Remember OFGEM telling us they where going to 3 months so we could have price decreases faster?

My arse the lying twats. They got told what to do and they meekly went along with it.

They could if someone could be arsed doing the proper analysis work to find out. Am I correct in saying EDF is mainly state owned and will be fully nationalised shortly? That might be one reason. What are the root causes though - we are told the war in Ukraine is a main factor but the UK only got a small % of its gas from that source. So what is it that seems to be putting up prices every bloody month. We deserve a better and more detailed explanation than we are getting. Just pay up and shut up seems to be the mantra.
I think it’s partially that and partially that France have more nuclear power plants, albeit at the end of their lives.

It hasn’t been done stealthily though. We’ve literally watched them do this and no one has given a shit.

Yet.

Come October, the JAMs won’t be able to manage anymore and it’ll become primary news, not just Martin Lewis describing how catastrophic it is going to be with people thinking it won’t happen to them.

All Starmer can do is demand action is done to alleviate the burden on people. The Tories will ignore it.

Forde was supposed to come back and say it didn't happen. Corbyn lost the whip coz he said it did.

Forde has substantiated Corbyn's explanation of events, so where's Starmer's mea culpa?
Corbyn lost the whip because he was asked not to comment on the day of the EHRC report.

Anti-semitism clearly became an issue which was used to bash the left, but it also clearly existed, and had become a major issue in the eyes of the public. More importantly most Jewish people thought it was a problem, and Labour were losing seats in Jewish areas. I was shouted at in the street on multiple occasions, including when I was out delivering leaflets with my four year old son. Sadly this had really cut through as an issue.

Labour had to move past it. Everyone knew Corbyn's views, but all he had to do was bit his tongue just once. As far as I'm aware the rest of the Campaign Group managed to do this - just not Corbyn.

The biggest stink to come out of all this is the fact we have allowed a system to continue where renewable electricity prices which have never been lower are tied to wholesale gas prices and you have to listen to CEO’s bleat how their hands are tied.

The net zero and green energy levy we have all been paying has been an utter out and out con job!

France as with many coutries own or part own their energy companies and regulate them, they tax them and cap them and in a crisis will, instead of subsidising them or offering them easy options like a windfall tax, will make them absorb the cost or set tariffs to aid it's citizens.

We preserve with the notion all these businesses are privately owned public services who will do whats right and ignore them or claim to have no way of stopping them as they profiteer
Norway have ensured that a proportion of the profits from the extraction and sale of 'their' oil is diverted to an oil fund for the benefit of Norwegian citizens. Its currently the largest pension fund in the world and is valued in excess of $250k per Norwegian citizen.

Smart decisions made by governments around energy policy make a huge and lasting difference. I wonder how much the UK oil fund is worth? Oh wait.....

I think we are about to see how subservient the British public are. Those who remember the poll tax riots will know the way out of this but I can't remember if that was the last time the country made a stand.

The poll tax itself wasn't even in the same ball park.

As for Starmer as each week passes he is showing he has very little passion running through him. He could well be our next prime minister and I understand why many on the left aren't exactly giddy with anticipation.

Unfortunately Norwegians are just better people than us in the main.

It could be done very quickly, but Truss won't do it unless she's forced to. If sufficient numbers don't pay, numbers too large for folk to be picked off individually and especially if there are riots, things can move fast in all sorts of directions.
I do wonder if we still live in a a society where that is likely to happen?

Clearly social media makes it easier to organise, but if you consider how crazy petrol prices have been, it's amazing that we haven't really seen any significant protests. Compare that to the fuel protests under Blair (incredibly the only time he lost his poll lead in the first 8 years he was PM), where there was much less to complain about.

Despite the absolute shitshow of the last few years under the Tories, it doesn't feel like the anger that would spill over as we had in the 70s and 80s.

wait until the energy prices kick in this winter. Then we will see.

Say more mate. You mean that renewable energy are tied to gas prices? WTF? The more I here about this the more I am convinced its yet another UK stitch up job.

Exactly that. The system is a stitch up and simply not fit for purpose.

Your 100% renewable electricity deal that you have paid the green levy towards for years and signed up for is not worth Jack shit because you will pay through your arse dependant on the gas price, regardless of how much the electricity cost to produce.

But that should be fairly simple to fix if you were minded to.

I guess we will - but the 2000 fuel protests were about petrol prices rising something like 5p a year and hitting 80p.

Compare that to the quite dramatic changes in the past year and we had almost no pushback.

Austerity, and the long recession it led to, should have made people angry, but it's almost like the frog in boiling water analogy - instead of huge redundancies, we had people's hours being cut, low wage growth, the gradual rise in food banks. Even the cut back of local services happened slowly in a way that left people annoyed at their local councils rather than the real culprits in central government, There there never seemed to be a tipping point, and I doubt there will be this year.

We've seen how Sunak and Truss were happy to peddle populist policies under Johnson, and I'd be amazed if they didn't just throw money at the problem if it starts to get edgy.

I must admit, Starmer/Labour have really turned it around from that low point and in such a short period.

The Starmer debate is very interesting. From your statement it sounds like he doesn’t put anything forward but I hear loads from him. On the current issue of energy costs, he’s put forward detailed plans that Labour would implement, such as capping the price at current levels, putting an immediate windfall tax on the profiteers and ensure those profiteering in future would pay the price.

A while ago he also stated that he would not privatise the industry but would work with them in a semi-privatised where the nation has influence on what happens within the industry.

There‘s obviously a lot more to Labours plans but, it seems, doesn’t ever get to the Mail/Express readers of this world.

People need to accept the vast majority don't get their views from the Mail or Express. Its a continual cop out used on here. There are plenty of Labour supporters on here and in the country in general who are critical of him.

I'm a green supporter and have stated he would be better than this current lot.
