Newcastle United (A) | Post Match thread

The biggest laugh is Pep wanting the five subs in for this season, then uses none bar for an enforced one. I don't get his thinking on subs, I really don't
We’d scored on 60 mins and 64 mins and were absolutely battering them for the first time in the game.

Why make a change when the balance had shifted in our favour anyway?

Mahrez was probably the first name you’d bring on to change something, from that bench… and it just so happened Bernado was already in his position doing very well.

7 points from a start with two tough away games is good. Only issue i have is Citys bench, think we will suffer this season compared to other teams as we dont have much strength in depth. Its a crazy schedule for top players this season and i hope i am proved wrong but we are i feel two players short to do what we want this season.

Possibly but its a bit disappointing when it seems like most shots on target have a good chance of going in..i may be harsh, i might track it for a few months to see if my eyes and gut feelings are deceiving me
He’s a good keeper with his hands. Nothing more.

He is however the best goalkeeper I’ve ever seen with his feet and given our system, the latter is enough to make up for the former.

Great game to watch, but we weren't ourselves for most of the first half and the start of the second half in that we were losing possession a bit too easy. Walker, Stones and Rodri were poor in the first 60 minutes, and Foden had another selfish brainfart.

We can't defend well when we don't control the ball long enough. It's that simple. Newcastle were pressing like mad and made it difficult for us, we lost our composure and were a bit too direct at times. Hope Foden realises his mistake. Has everything to be fantastic except for a cool head. Has enough time to mature and improve his decision making, though.

Thought Haaland was excellent and could have scored more. We are probably more stable in possession and defence with a false 9 or a presser like Jesus, but Haaland brings other things on the table. He's a proper predator and makes us better to watch.
Great game, CF brings a lot of pros and a lot of cons...KDB loves it as he can pass round corners.. but the rest of our team are built on tight one two's and carefully weighted cut backs to the penalty spot area ... or edge of area for another 1 - 2 ...Take some getting used to playing an early ball bending it round a full back. Mahrez can do that so may help from one side. The lad from Brighton (now Chelsea) also good at an early ball - could be a real miss that one

Why don’t we?

Jesus and Sterling for Haaland and Alvarez, Philips for Fernandinho, Gomez for Zinchenko.

Which positions are we more short in now?

I think that Arsenal’s bench will be a bigger problem for them though.
Given the huge impact that Jesus has had , if he has to miss games then arsenal are pretty much back to where they were last season.

Well thats the point, City have replaced one player in with another going without adding new depth to the squad. Just looking at the bench today and especially with the five subs rule i do not think we are equipped to take advantage of this.

I think we look a bit short given we have a World Cup in the middle of the season and the majority of our players will be in it. For me we should absolutely play more young players in the League Cup and FA Cup this year.

Watched on a different channel today and only just watched the Sky highlights.

The difference in commentary between them and us was laughable.

I know they want a good underdog story but they crossed into outright being disappointed when we equalised.

Great comeback, need to be positive - Magpies were well up for it.
This Foden not passing Haaland in is turning into a problem though.
I’d drop him for a bit.
Yup.. and to add to your comments:

(a) Newcastle got away with a lot of strong-arm stuff, as well as being, as you say, 'well up for it'

(b) Foden needs to give his head a wobble after twice in consecutive games making the wrong decision to feed Haaland to score

A good point against a developing team intent on roughing us up. It will be significant for the title race to have won that point from the position we found ourselves in. More importantly, the comeback will send a message around the league (and Europe too) that we never, ever give in..

Onwards and upwards.. C'mon you Blues!

They only want the underdog to win when its City put the dippers or rags and its a whole new outlook. Personally just stick on a foreign station and watch the game, cant listen to their crap anymore.

Our academy players are up to scratch or they wouldn't be anywhere near the first team.

We can't win them all

Glad for the come back

Haaland's goal to shut up the press

Bernardo's performance

The only negative thing was Pep not making a any changes after the equaliser.

Haaland is in for Kun, we turned to false nine after he left and never replaced him. You can say Alvarez is in for Jesus, but we are short of a player for Raheem position and it is obvious Pep is going Bielsa's way and working with a smaller squad. Palmer is obviously promoted permanently to the first team. How smart it is, we'll see at the end of the season. Pep has mentioned today Haaland won't be able to play every three days, so another thing to ponder about. Oleks and Jesus were seasoned PL players, Alvarez and this boy Gomez are definitely not and it is to be seen how Phillips is going to fit in.

I don't come on here to wind people up but I''ve seen some really sour grapes in here regarding the VAR decisions, maybe the people commenting will think differently if they watch the game again. The referee today should feel ashamed of himself getting so much wrong. Our first goal was never off-side and Trippier should never have been given a straight red, the tackle was with the top of his foot and was never going to cause a serious injury. I also thought that we could have had a penalty when Schar was brought down towards the end of the first half (I think it was then).

I'm more than happy to get a point from that game as you're easily the best team in the world and we've come a long way in a short space of time. I'm glad that you got the first goal and not us as I think we would have lost if we'd scored in the 5th minute.

Today was the first time that we’ve actually had a go at you for a long time. We played better at home to Forest but today was better when you consider the opposition in both games. In the end I thought that a point was well deserved, and a draw was a fair result. You can complain about some of your players maybe not being as good as others who could have started but we could say the same. Targett instead of Burn and the second and third goals possibly don’t happen because Burn was ball watching for both, that’s life we can all look at goals and pick fault but that’s football and not everybody is 100%.

Pope played well for us and that’s why we brought him in because he’s a huge upgrade for us and he’s shown that in the last two games. Saint-Maximin played as well as he did against Forest at home, probably slightly better, he’s’ changed his game slightly and is now passing instead of trying to do everything on his own. Joelinton put in a massive shift for us in midfield and Bruno had to take care once he got that early yellow and his game was reduced because of it.

We are much fitter under Howe, we could never have played like that under Bruce as the players were dead after 30 or 40 minutes after him and we have a game plan. We’ve only lost once at home since New Year and that was 0-1 against Liverpool so you not winning is not a massive surprise even though I thought that was the most likely result before the game.

I think both of our teams can and will get better as we play more games. Both teams are making massive changes. You’re getting used to Haarland who will be a massive threat to any team once you get the best out of him and we are learning to play more in the face of the opposition and not being so passive.

We set up to have a go and deserved a point. You can see how much further we need to go with bringing in better players as our substitutions came on and offered absolutely nothing. Maybe the entertainers are on their way back, at least I hope so because we’ve been garbage for so long. I would love to see us sign Paqueta as he would give us that extra quality up front and he works really, really well with Bruno as they can read each other’s game so well and he (Paqueta) has not been the same player since we signed Bruno from Lyon. I don’t know if anybody on here watches Brazil, the game against Bolivia will help you understand what I mean by them playing so well together when they assisted each other’s goals by simply knowing their game so well. They played together for Lyon and could always find each other as they knew exactly what runs each other made.

Lastly, you’ll still win the league although you shouldn’t expect us to help you out against Liverpool without us making another couple of quality signings. Our first 11 is fine when everybody is fit, move away from the first 11 and we’re struggling, we need to replace some of our starting 11 and get them onto the bench.

God, I waffle on.
Nothing to disagree with there, as I'm one of those who thought a yellow was fair enough.
But, you'd better bloody turn up against Liverpool and get St Maximum to rip Trent a new one.

I never moan about ref's some are good some are bad, go on RAWK and its a horrendous conspiracy against them! BUT i have seen a lot of reds given for Trippier's challenge, slow motion even worse, freeze frame as they ref saw on the monitor, looked out of control lunge, both feet were off the ground. Many reds given with NO VAR checks for that type of challenge
Never a red in a million years
