Well, this is a surprise! Can't say I've watched Akanji enough to have a detailed opinion, but when I have seen him he's seemed solid and very fast, so I certainly think he's got the physical attributes to fit in. Wonder what this signing means, though. Pep planning to play a back three? Worries that Laporte will be out longer than expected? Doubts about the fitness of the other CBs? It's an interesting one, either way.

A bit of an odd signing considering Laporte/Ake are coming back soon but I was really impressed with him in the England/Switzerland friendly over the summer.

Not that this means anything but his fifa card is fairly good for pace considering he’s a 6’1 CB.

It’s a very low risk signing & I think will turn into a good & reliable option at CB

Completely disagree. We need another as also proven end last season. Also frees up versatile defenders to cover elsewhere if all of them are fit! Also stops Roddes and Kalvin to have to play there
End of last season was a freak occurrence. As I say, if we've had some worrying news regarding injuries it makes total sense, if we're expecting to have 5 fit cbs available fairly soon it makes less sense.

As for it freeing up players to play elsewhere, a fullback would eliminate the need for others to play out of position in the first place.

For the record I'm not against this at all. Im very much on board with it, simply saying with the information we currently have regarding our squad, an actual fullback would have made more sense in my eyes. Either way, it's an extra body in and we can all be relieved at that.

The couple of Dortmund fans I've spoken to since this broke say he's similar to Ake but (I think but may have misunderstood) plays on the right, so that's not so bad if we're looking at playing three at the back at times.
