Owning a nice watch

Rolex ad's can fuck off as far as I'm concerned.
I'm in there, wearing a 6k omega, and I enquire about a new sub. I'm only enquiring as the sub now has a decent case size, which suits my wrist. Anything less than 41mm looks shit on my wrist.
She tells me I have to go on a waiting list. OK I'll think about it I say.
I call in again about a month later, this time I'm wearing my vintage speedmaster, worth about 8k, and I'm genuinely looking for a light brown hirsh strap for it, which I know they have. I buy the strap, and again casually ask about the availability of a sub.
Now at this point, they know me, I've been in the shop numerous times with a bit of money on my wrist, merc parked outside. I've got the money to buy a sub.
They suggested I buy a 36 fucking mm explorer, that had been in the window for 18 months. With a salmon dial.
They'd seen my 44mm planet ocean, and my 42mm speedy, yet they recommended to buy some shitty explorer that we both knew was wrong.
I'd love the new sub, I'll buy one second hand, when it suits me.

Did you offer to pay in cash?

Probably mistook you for a drug dealer looking to launder your ill gotten gains.

Too much hassle to sign all the anti money laundering forms.

Next time wear a casio and George at Asda clothing and footwear.

Guaranteed to get you on the list.

I didn't offer any money, but even a fucking simpleton could have seen I was a serious buyer.
I've got several casios, some quite rare ones.
I draw the line at George though, a man has standards you know, I'm strictly a sports direct kind of guy ;-)

I love Omega watches. I’d love to own a Speedmaster moon watch, or a Seamaster Diver one day but it’s out of reach at the moment. The Aqua Terra is beautiful too.

I had a nice Steinhart dive watch that I sadly left at a girls house a few years back (before I met mrs marsbar!).

I want to buy another (budget, sadly) mechanical watch, been wearing an Apple Watch for a few years but I’ve had enough of it.

Something no more than a couple hundred quid that is tasteful and will go well on a nato strap. Suggestions welcome!

@Johnny Mars Bar

You'll have look to the Japanese to get a decent mechanical watch in that price range, that even most watch collectors would nod approvingly of.
Since you mention nato strap, I assume that you're looking for a diver or a field watch/sports watch.

I'd suggest you consider the Seiko 5 Sports series. Several dial colours and strap types available. Examples:
Seiko 5 Sports Blue Ref. SBSA001
Seiko 5 Sports - Field Collection Black Ref. SBSA111

A dressier alternative, a bit more pricey:
Citizen Automatic Blue Ref. NB1050-59L

Tons of reviews on YouTube etc.

(btw, I'm not affiliated with Gnomon watches in any way. The watches I suggested are available from lots of other vendors as well)

And dump the Mercedes and arrive on a moped. Sorted!

It's a great watch mate, was just jesting.
So much more character than a sub, and probably the only rolex I covert.
I'll never own one cos I ain't doing the dealer dance.
You have good taste, bravo sir, wear it in good health.
What's your watch history?
Started buying and collecting about 12 years ago, I've always admired great watch making, I'm not one of those who buy and sell on for a quick profit,I love to wear and admire the craftsmanship that goes into them, among my collection at the moment are some beauties such as
Breitling Avenger
Breitling super Avenger
Breitling Super ocean
Tudor Black bay GMT
Omega Seamaster 300
Bell And Ross divers watch
Rolex Deep sea ( James Cameron)
Tag Heuer Monaco
Zenith Grande Date Moon phase ( with open heart exhibition) which I consider one of the most beautiful watches ever made
My next target is a panerai but that's going to have to wait until the Mrs calms down after what I spent on the deep sea :)

Some great pieces there fella, I've owned a few that you have in your collection, several 300's, the tag Monaco, and briefly, the superocean.
Unlike you though, I tend to move them on to scratch the next itch, but I rarely make a profit lol.
Not many become keepers, and I don't tend to suffer from sellers remorse, but I do regret selling my last 300, it was a stunning watch.
I love the history and the craftsmanship too, being an engineer myself, I'm in awe of watchmaking.

That first Seiko doesn't look at all bad for that price.
Will dig into the reviews.
Gotta say I'm no watch connoisseur but the Root Beer Rolex looks delicious.

The seiko is a great shout. However, I'd be looking for an skx, now discontinued, for around £300, or mint used for £200 ish. Plenty still on ebay. Money well spent, these will only increase in value imo

Looks great too.
I'll be honest, I would'n't know where to start buying a second hand watch.

Orient make lovely dive watches for about £200. In house movements and really good value. Look for the “Kamasu”.
Or get another steinhart. Also great value if you don’t mind them being an homage to the crown. (I don’t, I think they’re brilliant)

Yeah I totally get that mate. Having owned a few seikos (I wear my skx daily) I know what I'm looking at.
You're probably best going new tbf.
I'd go to a dealer, get it in your hands, try it on, etc.
Be aware that seiko build quality can be sketchy, especially the low end pieces. Make sure the dial lines up with the bezel etc.
Good hunting bud

Yeah, one to dig into next year.
Seiko Dealer right? Any other similar dive watches off good value?
I wear my apple most to the time tbf but I do love the look of those chunky dive watches.

Thanks mate.

The kamasu is brilliant vfm.
I've had a few steinharts, rock solid mate.
Some good advice there bud

No worries bud.
Yeah, seiko dealer, they are normally very good.
Last one I bought new was from a dealer in Knutsford, but that was years ago.
Check out kazzys recommendation of the orient gear, he's spot on, although I'm not sure they have shops where you can try them on, etc

They don’t have any uk based dealers sadly (Orient). I get mine from a company called “serious watches” based in Holland. Order Monday, arrives Wednesday. They do returns if needs be (but you won’t return them, they’re great).
They do a lovely little dress watch as well called the Bambino. Now available in a 38mm size. The straps are a bit ropey and cheap but you can get a nice Hirsch strap for about £20-30 and jobs a good’un

They also do this, (as you probably know) stunning chronograph.
How they make and sell this for the money I'll never know.

That’s gorgeous. I honestly don’t know how they do it. They’re part of the Epson corp I believe (who own seiko) so they probably use their development budget etc but god knows how they do it.
