Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post-Match Thread

Just frustrated with that one to be fair. Pep knew that was going to be a defensive Villa.

The space was down the wings but Bernie and Foden didn’t play it smart and drop
Quickly into the space. I thought Foden was pedestrian and why Alvarez wasn’t used I will never know.

Nevertheless, still unbeaten and Haaland continues to be immense. That just feels like a missed opportunity.

don't know how but we were worse once Bernie went off.
Said this at the time. He took the wrong winger off.

In a tight fought game, you shouldn't take Bernardo off.

That said, Pep's got more than enough credit in the bank.

Villa didnt deserve a point they created f*ck all and set out to get a draw with Slippy's ten behind the ball tactics , we were rubbish in comparison to some of our football this season ,but we still did more than enough to win today , the cheer from the Villa fans at the end spoke volumes , are they expecting a trophy for avoiding defeat ? , small time club with small time mentality manager and supporters , they belong in the Championship.
If we had drawn against the great Liverpool sides of the past at home, we would have cheered too

Come on, everyone knows he should have dealt with the first ball but we had the chance to properly defend the free kick but ended up conceding a comical goal.
% of shots saved by Eddy is very low i imagine. Just like the kid who goes in school for his ten min stint but is dying to get back out on pitch. Ive always said i dont think his ability to chip a ball to a full back beats being a keeper. His 1 v 1 save shocked me today ,

Just watch the cricket, so here is my view of the game,
pretty flat all round, sloppy passing, villa defended very well, take the point move on,

one thing I will say is Phil Foden is wasted out wide, the lad need to get on the ball and drive this team on in games like today, so would have played Foden in the gundogan role today

Amazing recovery from their keeper too wasn’t it?
They way he suddenly collapsed after Mings had a word in his shell-like, looked really serious, a stretcher job, but his recovery (after a few minutes) was truly miraculous.

We played well 2nd half but have to put those chances away. Could've easily been 3-0 up before they scored theirs. Just one of them really, shows how much work you have to put in for results in this league, nothing is a given. I'm sure we will fix up.

My only concern is Walker. Injured again but not really playing well, or maybe not playing as well because he's got more responsibility this year. Either case, hope he's not out for too long and can return back to his usual, sharp best.

Haaland yet again standout performer. KDB was great too. Some players can do better but it's early in the season so not really concerning yet.

Yep, he's been plonked there and it ain't working.

Villa fan here, very very pleased with a point , thought we rode our luck at times but you need luck to get a result against the best team on the planet. City will win the league easily this season as the dippers are not so good without Marnie and although arse have done well so far they have not played anybody so far UTV.

At the end of the day despite what our start suggests we are still warming up for this season. Today illustrates that better than any of the other games. Looking at the dippers we will still win this league.

its the trick everybody uses now vs Manchester city, get a player to go down, stop the game in its tracks players get drinks gels fuels it drives me crazy

No they didn’t and we fluffed it Arse, pool, rags, spurs will have a go and we will struggle
We cant say we deserved much more... they were pragmatic..as they should be....their in bottom 3...on train back to london and Chelsea fan who went with his villa mates just said we were like Chelsea....so pedesterian

Cant really play out wide.. just isnt effective there

Any game not won always feels like a defeat for us but in fairness we just werent at it today and Villa kept to their task which is why we didnt get the 3 points. That said, we are the masters over 38 matches so I look to our position in May and not the start of September.

Oh and I'm getting fed up of the pundits and commentators pushing the "City got away with one there" narrative every week moreso than any other team.

The Newcastle game, never a penalty that, he backed into Stones who had every right to challenge for a lofted cross in his own penalty box. Not sure what Shearer and Jenas were drinking before that MOTD(Newcastle brown ale perhaps) but Hinchcliffe in commentary was even worse. Said he used his arms to shove him in the back, stayed quiet when the replay showed what actually happened.

Palace, the whistle went before the player had a chance to shoot. The whistle went because it's an offence to even make a challenge while the keeper has the ball in his hands(raised his leg and stepped across while Ederson was still swinging his arm). I've seen others suggest that he also ran from the keepers blind-side because Ederson was looking the other way at the time and he didn't see him, which apparently isn't allowed either. I'm not sure about that one, I can only see a ref taking issue if he was behind him and ran in front as he's throwing it. The first explanation is justification enough though, it's not really in the spirit of the game to try shithouse tactics like that and getting in the way of the keeper in his own box, holds the game up too. Finally, they should only have been 0-1 up anyway, the ref made the mistake of giving a corner instead of freekick to City while they checked for a possible red card. Since when is a hand or arm to the face anything but a freekick, anywhere on the pitch?

Against Villa, the ref blew his whistle for an offside before Coutinho had a chance to shoot. A goal scored when the game has been stopped by the refs whistle can never be able to stand(just like the palace one). That was a ref/linesman mistake because he was onside.

Annoying how often rival fans and biased pundits push these BS narratives, clearly trying to get refs to "even" the score in future fixtures IMO.

We are lucky he barely has a shot to save most games
