Chelsea-Liverpool, United-Leeds, Brighton-Palace all off, rest of the games on (pg 128)

Its not about the actual football itself that I'm concerned about. Its the thousands and thousands of already struggling small businesses who rely on a match day to bring in much needed income where my sympathies lie.
That's the crux of it and that's why in a modern world the outdated notion that the man on the street should suffer because a country is coming to a standstill to mourn doesn't sit right with me.
It’s been postponed not cancelled. So they will get the income on the day when the game is rescheduled.

I'm going to make this my last post on the topic because I'm becoming too impassioned, but what's fucking me off more than anything is every media outlet, braindead celebrity, figure of authority, every disingenuous politician, telling us that the whole nation is bereaved. That the whole nation is mournfully reflecting. No, they don't get to speak for everyone, and they certainly don't get to speak for me. I'm not affected in anyway.

The Queen was a one off; the rest of that family are repugnant, and it's high time this anachronistic charade was abolished.
@Octavian and @Kaz are coming for you now.

It's a monumental period in our history. I think it's right there's no football this weekend, it's such a pivotal moment.

I understand those, who don't have an affinity for the royals, (I don't either) but it's the right thing to do. It's about priorities for a lot of people.

Football will carry on.

The FA and Premier League have been made to look like absolute mugs here.

I mean, the decision to call the games off tomorrow actually benefits me because I'm moving house and a few walls need painting. The Spurs game being called off means I can dedicate the day to that task instead. But forcing people to mourn something while the rest of the sporting world just carries on is fucking bonkers.

And now this decision by the ECB makes it all look much, much worse.
I think you'll find that no one is "forcing you" to do anything. I wasn't aware the Queen was reigning monarch of the sporting world BTW?

Isn't the ECB calling off the test?

i think i've asked quite a few people this now, and i dont want to exclude you: are you angry/miffed that other sports are going ahead? other facets of life like pubs, meals out and so on? why football in particular?

But what purpose does it actually serve to postpone the games? Beyond some vague nonsense about 'respect' and it being 'the right thing to do', what's the actual practical, real-world purpose of postponing the games? I'm genuinely curious.

Its wildly out of control now.
It’s not as OTT as when Diana died…. So far.

The acres of flowers left was one thing that stood out as wrong (to me) - could have donated the buying flowers money to her charities?

The collective grief was overpowering and any dissent to the collective grief was treated (by media) as the worst thing ever, unpatriotic, unbritish etc.

Grieve in your own way , for whatever reason, fine, but imposing that view and attacking others without that same view…
Or even worse, as with the football, kowtowing to a perceived potential backlash from a fenzied media (social or otherwise), and blithely stopping stuff happening.

Heyho.

Nope. ECB have confirmed the test is going ahead.

Sort of a microcosm of where we are really. We'll let ordinary people suffer economic harm as a result of decisions made by people who don't consult us in any meaningful way and treat us with contempt. The decisions themselves are irrational and mired in some sort of faux reverence for a bygone era and a way of life that much of the rest of the world has moved one from when we seem incapable of doing so.
But the reality is that many people think they have moved on from that era but in reality society has not. What people are experiencing now and will experience next week is that ‘society’ constraining the freedoms they have come to enjoy. Part of the price we all have to pay.

Strange that some sports are on tomorrow and some not. I’m not fussed either way as to be honest I’d rather play Spurs when we are firing fully and have all our players available.

Even if they later get all of the income they would have received over these 10 days—very unlikely given the difference between the seasonal periods in which the games will be played—that is income delayed by four months (going in to winter).

That is yet another unnecessary hardship born by those least able to bear it.

So, are we cancelling sporting events to pay respects to the Queen or are we going ahead with sporting events to pay tribute to the Queen? Please, as a loyal citizen, I must be informed as to what to do tomorrow!

Some of these businesses need every penny they can get right now. You may have noticed that there's a crisis going on at the moment that is severely affecting small and large businesses alike due to rising bills left right and center and the threat of closing the doors for some is real.
They may have just been able to take a one off hit but if the same happens next week and then it's the international break there's probably a fair few nervous people wondering what to do right now.

Not to mention its a fucking stupid decision in the first place anyway.
