Running thread

I've just moved into a flat in Castlefield & am looking for advice on running routes
Did a short run this morning along the Bridgewater Canal to just beyond Cornbrook tram stop & back. It was pleasant enough but a bit busy with cyclists even at 0700.
Any other off road routes in the area recommended?
Given that my local Parkrun will now be Peel Park, I guess I'll be doing some practice runs there at some point.

After the Manchester Marathon, a year ago, I suspected something was wrong. That's when I saw the doctor, had tests, and was put on iron tablets last November. My course finished and my levels dropped again in January, so I requested a repeat prescription in February and have been on them ever since.

Ferrous fumarate tablets - 2 x 210mg per day, and my energy is back to normal. I'm 61 so don't pay for prescriptions, but if I had to buy them myself, they are cheaper on Amazon.

Alexandra Park is quite close, and a nice wide footpath course, ideal for wet weather as it doesn't get muddy.

I've only run in that area once, and that was from the Trafford Centre into Manchester for City's victory parade earlier this year. There were lots of quiet roads and paths in Trafford Park.
 
I'm currently without a car as my ex now has the spare one I had when she had the main one (she needs it for her work and she has the children and I probably need to look at getting a new one in the new year....depending on how tanked the UK economy goes!). I live next to a train and tram station so well connected.
So when I go to see the kids I either walk the 3.5k or run over.

After work I ran over - 3.5k there, 'borrowed' the car (the one I had!) and drove to my track for running interval sessions (6.6k) - did a 1k warm down....drove back then after dropping the car off, ran back to my flat - another 3.5k.
Did roughly 15k which is the most I've ran in absolutely ages and that's very promising.

Also, given my Park Run 5ks are hovering around the 27 min mark, I managed a pace of 4.32 km over the 6k track tonight which is also. very promising.

The cooler weather absolutely helps. Hopefully I can start thinking about half marathons again. Those runs genuinely give me such highs, especially on dark, cold winter nights.
 
This is a hell of a thread skipped through, you are all wrong, Cycle, less stress on the joints and if you think you are fit, get yourself over the Hardknott pass in the lake district.

With you on that mate, I'm forever going on a water polo forum telling them they not as fit as darts players.
Admit it you posted that after a few cans watching the match in your crotchless lycra cycling onezie

Can I ask some advice re fuelling before and during race please. I currently have a banana and coffee before going out then take 2 saltchews and water while out. If doing 9 or 10 miles usually about the 3 mile mark then about 6. Plus during those hot days took on water at times as well. I have read about eating jelly babies during the run helps. I don't like the SIS gels but wondered what else I might want/need so can test. TIA

Jelly babies are ok for long runs,have a look at cola blocks as well

I know what you mean about the towpath.Have a look at going down the Irwell past Peel park to Kersall wetlands

Cost me £3000 in total, took my lad for 4 nights. Was fantastic mate.
 
Just got back into running after running on and off for a while.

I used to be part of an athletics club after I gave up football at 17, kept running until I was 21 and started struggling with IBS. I'm 28 now, put on a bit of weight over lockdown (11kg), lost a couple of kg since, so down to 93kg, which is still a bit heavier than i'd like but not overweight due to my height and I'm still relatively fit.

Really enjoying running again at the moment.

I'm training for a 5km PB and a 10km race this winter, with the view to doing a half marathon/marathon next year, I used to hate long distance running (800m runner).

Ran a 23min 5km 2 nights ago as part of my training, so I was quite surprised/happy with that given I've only started properly training these past 3 or 4 weeks. I'm hoping to drop under 20mins by December, which is fairly ambitious.

Just popping in here, as I usually like to read this thread for a bit of inspiration.

I don't think any fuel is needed for a half marathon. If you really feel that you want to take something, you could do a lot worse than one or two OTE Super Gels or Maurten gels early on in the race (one every 30 minutes-ish).
