Running thread

5 miles this morning before work. Easy 4 then little faster for last one. Just over 3 weeks until HM going away next weekend on a trip that's been planned and cancelled twice due to covid restrictions so hoping to do my last long run this weekend. Can I ask some advice re fuelling before and during race please. I currently have a banana and coffee before going out then take 2 saltchews and water while out. If doing 9 or 10 miles usually about the 3 mile mark then about 6. Plus during those hot days took on water at times as well. I have read about eating jelly babies during the run helps. I don't like the SIS gels but wondered what else I might want/need so can test. TIA
I don't think any fuel is needed for a half marathon. If you really feel that you want to take something, you could do a lot worse than one or two OTE Super Gels or Maurten gels early on in the race (one every 30 minutes-ish).

Might be wise to take stu's advice with a pinch of salt OB, he's a treadmill hamster nowadays, probably watches the eastenders omnibus and gets through a packet of hobnobs on his "runs"

Joking aside, may I suggest that the time to complete the HM is a determining factor in the refuelling strategy?

Say sub 90 minutes is quick with only water needed? Over 120 minutes is slow and needs food. Between 90 and 120 minutes is debatable?

You getting mixed up with the hammer fella forever blowing bubbles? He is a Southern flat road plodder. Stuuuu is Josh Naylors son and rounds up the sheep on his daily run over Scafell Pike and Great Gable.

I'm 60 and my first HM. My training plan is set for a time of roughly 2 hours

Don't try anything new on race day. It's probably too late to experiment with gels if your last long run is this weekend and then away on hol the following weekend. Stick to your current practice of salt chews and water at 3 and 6 miles but maybe add a couple of miles to each or where the water stations are.

Plenty of rest, water and carbs for a couple of days before the race. Don't start too fast.

Good luck.

Isabel Trail Parkrun in Stafford completed in 30:31 this morning which was a PB. Feels so much more enjoyable & less sweaty now we have some cooler mornings.
There was a running club from Liverpool taking part this morning so had to be careful not to slip in any phlegm or end up with my running shoes on bricks.

Longest run to date this morning and my last long run before my HM in 3 weeks. I'm away next weekend so will start to taper when I return. I did 11.75 miles and took me 2 hours 15 mins so basically on time for a 2.30 finish which is what I've been training for. It felt ok and my other half said I looked ok when I got in home (did have a short cool down walk after it). I had banana and coffee before going out. At 5k took 2 saltchews, 5 miles 2 jelly babies, 10k 2 saltchews, 7.5 miles 2 jelly babies, 15k 2 saltchews and a jelly baby at 10 miles. Taking sips of water each time. I wore kit I intend wearing for the HM and feel I'm ready. Thanks to everyone on here for their help, support and advice. You guys are an inspiration

Sounds good. Stick to the same eating and drinking plan on the HM day. Depending on how hilly the training route today was compared to HM route you could even complete HM in about 2.15.....

You'll be rested and get an adrenalin boost in first few miles. But don't go off too fast. Try to slow it down in the first few miles. You may be surprised about how easy / fast the first few miles are. But take it easy.

Good luck.

It’s mental isn’t it

I train at around a 9min pace

Race day Saturday I thought take it easy first few miles and my first mile was 7:49 … remembering thinking wtf ! Felt like I was striding the same as always , must be the adrenaline and crowds etc

Exactly. It's happened to me, especially in marathons. Took me a while to learn. Patience is the key in the first few miles.

I managed a 12km run today - my furthest for a while. I'm spending a few days in Leamington Spa and thought it would be nice to run to Warwick and back. Took a wrong turn during the back part and it added about an extra 3km. Enjoyable though.
