Gas & Electricity

My boiler is so old , an ideal boiler , got the big main bit replaced and a full service and clean for free a few yrs ago ,as british gas fucked up appointments , not turning up etc , it is like a new boiler now and works very well

Cue it breaking down lol

I had a viessmann storage combi installed 3 years ago and it’s great. It holds a small store (46 litres) of hot water, so when there is demand, there is no waiting whilst the boiler gets going. I went with this as most of the internal parts are brass or stainless steel rather than plastic. Plastic parts have a habit of splitting when subjected to lots of hot and cool down cycles.

My heating guy swears by ideal combi’s, but I had no end of issues with one of theirs 10 years ago. The PCB failed at least twice a year! By all accounts they are much better now.

What are heat pumps like? Do they dish out enough heat?

Apparently hydrogen is the future though.
Heat pumps are great and really efficient. They are good for new builds as the radiators or under floor heating can be sized for the lower heating temperatures that the operate at. A traditional gas heating system is sized for 80 degrees flow temperature, and heat pumps provide flow water at around 55/60 degrees. The latest ones are a bit better and can provide 65 degree water temps. However, if retrofitted to an existing heating system, the rads will not be big enough to give the same heat output as the traditional system, so bigger rads are required. That’s why they are perfect for under floor heating systems as the larger surface area of the floor allows for the lower flow temperatures.

With British gas, not had the rebate yet although October's DD went out on Monday. Anyone else had it?

I'm with Octopus and had my first payment of £66(?) on the 5th of this month, currently £660 in credit, so not too worried about the coming winter and usage etc, nice little buffer to keep us warm. I'm glad now that I just went with the flow regarding the dd increases, they've dropped it now to £144pm.
Had the heating on a fair bit this last month as we are both at home most daytimes, will see the impact when I do the readings on the 19th.
