Ref Watch

Why ?

He was fucking woeful, he waved play on and then did the "got the ball" thing, but for some reason changed it to giving us a free kick and booking their player, if that's not a shit referee then I don't know what is.

He's fucking clueless.
Yeah, nowt like Taylor vs Chelsea back in the day.

I think Taylor was a different "event", one is by design, the other is just incompetence.
All these responses are down to referees decisions not getting what we want.

Pawson didn’t decide the game today.

How can it be anywhere near the worst refereeing performance?

Luckily today he didn't, but one of the worst (of very many) performances I've ever seen, he should be demoted immediately for it.
Agreed. The level of outrage that fans feel for an incompetent ref performance isn't usually directly linked to how bad he was but moreso to whether he cost us the win or not.

Had Brighton equalised today and gone on to gain a draw, and for 15 or 20 mins that looked quite likely, his terrible handling of the game would've been brought much more sharply into focus and this thread would be 50 or 60 pages longer. Off the top of my head i think that's the worst ref performance I've seen at home since that awful Marriner showing against either Soton or Palace last season i think it was.

I agree.

He lacked consistency,he missed the obvious, and he prevented the game from flowing. The decisions surrounding the penalty claims/award were baffling.

The standards of officiating in our league are woeful but he is a man well out of his depth.

We were given a penalty that wasn’t a penalty for me yesterday. Bernardo was the one who kicked the defender more than anything and his lighter weight seemed to jolt over from the transfer of weight back up his body.

Pawson just thought that it wasn’t a foul but the linesman who had a different view was talking to him and told him it was. That’s all that was.

That’s the way I saw it too, although Bernardo did get a shove from behind so I can see why they gave it
The earlier (not given) one on Haaland was nailed on IMO

On the blue moon podcast this week, the guest journo confirmed that broadcasters can hear the chatter between the officials in real time. I'd have to go back and check if he was talking about Stockley park or the referee and assistants, but that was something I didn't actually realise happened. The hope is that this becomes audible to audiences at home too.

Be interesting to see if the have sky sports or bt on live at Stockley Park too. You'd hope not but on a few occasions the co commentator ex footballer, ie Neville, can be heard seemingly appealing to someone unseen to convince them of what just happened on the pitch.

Bernardo was pushed into the defender.
Do you think that was enough for a penalty in these times since the Euros last year where the bar was raised for what is given for fouls and penalties?

I’m not sure it is.

But I suppose if Arsenal were given that one against Liverpool then it definitely is!

I thought the referee performance was typical of what we face. LOTG seemed to be changed to how to manage the game, effectively adding weight to a horse to even up the field.

Advantages are played when no advantage is there, under the guise of allowing it to flow. The disadvantage of this is fouls go unpunished, yellows aren’t awarded, fouls can continue & the flow of City’s attacks are affected.
At the other end any misdemeanour seems to be rewarded to allow the game to slow & provide the opportunity of dead-ball situation. This means fouls are awarded so obviously yellows are given & adds an edge.
