Brentford (H) | Post-Match Thread

They had two or three clear chances in the first 5 minutes before we even started playing. Deserved win for them and a disappointing performance all round for us. After the World Cup it will all be forgotten and current form will be out of the window. The break has come at a good time for us as we’ve not looked at our best for a while. A result like this was coming.
Not much of a break for 16 of them Why is philips going?

explain what we were better at today, attacking no, defending no, creating chances no, so how were we better
I didn’t say we were the better team, if you look back I disagreed with a poster saying Brentford were the better team. We were poor today, I thought they were as well and what was served up was poor to watch. I don’t think every match is so binary that the winning team is automatically the better team. Packing the defensive third, hanging on at corners, riding your luck with decisions doesn’t make you the better team.

Our defense also has been suspect recently and Ederson could have done better with their 2 goals
There’s harsh and there’s holy fuck let’s not go mental..
The first he’s off his line but that’s down to anticipation and not expecting both his CBs to not win there headers. It looped up and was just unfortunate for him.
I’ve no words for the second. I’ve no idea what you could possibly think he should have done?

Same number of points as last season this time however we were about to win our next 7 games and playing better football.

A bit flat over the past few games and a bad result was coming but its not panic stations by any means.

Akanji didn't need protection from the midfield, it was by-passed with the long ball.

His job was to win his aerial battles and he lost every one.
His attempt to win the header for their first goal was pathetic, not sure how it was possible but he jumped downwards, he was made to look very weak far too often today.

Yup I think Arsenal are odd on, they will run us ragged and I’m not convinced we’re good enough for 2nd after todays can’t be arsed performa
And, though I hate it, this enforced break may be coming at a not inopportune time for the team. Step away from the league campaign for a period, concentrate on your national teams, and come back refreshed and raring to go. Also, we're a second half of the season team under Pep. I'm still optimistic about the season ahead.
I’m with you. Perfect time for a break. Come back refreshed and in reality we aren’t even half way through the season. Regroup, refresh and hope no injuries at wc

I wouldn't bother EB. Your boy didn't win too many popularity awards today.
Not sure why, I obviously haven’t seen the match thread but John Stones got extremely frustrated with some of his team mates and some of his runs, especially that one just before half time when he mesmerised the Brentford players passed to one of ours and got frustrated when our player messed it up!

It was an off day for a lot of our players and I’ll tell you what I bet Pep gave them a tongue lashing afterwards!!

I suppose ever has their own opinions. I am not just looking at JB through blue tinted glasses today but by my observations at the game and from some of the folk around me. :-)

Ederson, 7 - Would have been over long before it was had it not been for him

Stones, 5 - Kept trying going forwards but looked unsure defensively throughout
Akanji, 4 - Didn't fancy it today, did he?
Laporte, 7 - My personal MOTM, kept fighting even after a nasty injury
Cancelo, 4 - In a bad place at the moment, hopefully the World Cup lifts him

Rodri, 5 - Lost count of how many aerial duels he lost, mind seemed elsewhere today
De Bruyne, 4 - Write it off, Kev. Have a good World Cup, come back your usual self
Gundogan, 5 - Tried to be too tidy today, should have made way for Grealish sooner

Bernardo, 6 - Worked hard but is restricted out on the right
Foden, 6 - Took his goal really well, was very flat for the other 99% of the game
Haaland, 4 - Clearly wasn't fit, never got involved

Brentford got their tactics spot on and Pep failed to react during the game, despite obvious failings.

I stopped expecting Pep to react mid-game after we lost to a team of reserves at Norwich.

I find it hard to believe that he actually campaigned for five subs.

Brentford mugged us today and we deserved it.

I think this is ‘living in the moment’ commentary more than anything else. This is actually our best start to a season since 2018.

You say we’ve gone backwards but we started the last two seasons before this one with worse performances and worse results. It was only around Christmas that we began to find our feet, go top, and start to build a gap.
It’s our best points tally to start a season since 2018, it’s not our best level of performances to start a season since 2018.

We’ve been remarkably average for our standards despite accumulating a decent points tally.

We were only okay at West Ham, poor for a lot of the game at Newcastle, poor first half against Palace, very poor at Villa, just as bad at Wolves despite the different score line compared to the Villa game, poor in the last half hour against United, very poor at Liverpool, poor against Brighton, average at Leicester, very poor today.

We don’t look right to me. Don’t know if it’s mentally or finding our new way of playing difficult to get in a rhythm with or the fucking World Cup… whatever it is, we’re not ‘at it’ at all. Even when we do play well it’s isolated as a performance or even isolated to one half of a game and we don’t follow it up with any consistency.

Our defense also has been suspect recently and Ederson could have done better with their 2 goals

I am going to hibernate for the next month and a bit!
Fucking hell. The one game you cannot possibly call out Ederson as he made a string of decent saves including one on ones, and you think he can save a deflected, looping header that he’d have to have been 12 foot tall to reach and a tap in from a yard.

Enjoy your hibernation.

Our players need to have it out in dressing room when we come back, like we did under Fernandinho.
These kind of performances aren’t good enough and they need telling.
All of them.
