Brentford (H) | Post-Match Thread

I’m out in Australia atm for a mates wedding and found myself watching this in an Adelaide casino at midnight. Beglin on coms, surrounded by morons, some bloke screaming a tuneless version of ‘It’s coming home’ at me every time a City player misplaced a pass. Simply Tragic! Oh and now it’s started to piss it down and the cricket World Cup final looks like it will be washed out. CTID.

Cultism. He’s human and fallible.
We’ve been just about scrambling through games and edging results for weeks now
Our worst performances and worst spells almost always involve shoving Bernie out to the right wing to shoehorn everyone else in
This lunacy was quite rightly binned off two or three years ago. Quite why it had suddenly returned with a vengeance is baffling
It makes Bernie worse and the whole team worse
Agreed, we need Bernardo's energy in midfield, KDB, Rodri and Gundogan together are far too slow and immobile.

A midfield of De Bruyne, Rodri and Gündoğan very rarely works….don’t understand why Pep has this obsession to shoehorn them into the starting line up and sacrifice the energy of Bernardo.

Also very frustrating that he will not trust one of the young full backs to give us a better balance.

Hope Pep signs for another couple of years….however he can be very frustrating.

I have heard several excuses as to why we lost today, the cold truth is we were not.good enough, people slagfing Brentford off is pathetic,.are.we.that stupid as a.fan base that we think teams should play to our strengths and roll over? We had a number done on us

what did the ref do wrong exactly?
Let's start with allowing the time wasting
What is the point of waving your arm at the keeper and turning your back?
At another point he threw his head to one side in a "come on" type motion

Foden fouled, allows play to continue as it looks like an advantage, its broken up by Brentford, play on

Brentford player fouled, allows play to continue as it looks like an advantage, it's broken up by City, whistle blown foul awarded

Fouling when City were taking a corner. Play stopped and a retake, when a pen should be awarded

Haaland booked for turning his man who was totally committed

Added time
Laporte down for 7 and a half minutes
Play stopped for the linesman's equipment failure which was another minute and a half
Four subs (I think)
All the time wasting as above and more
Ten minutes time added

Brentford celebration was two minutes, he added a further 57 seconds

It was a pathetically weak refereeing performance

I think the point is we are 100% good enough to be beating Brentford, however something stopped that happening either player commitment or managers tactics both of which is our own doing. To say we are not good enough to win today is ludicrous

Since we rocketed the rags we've been shit. And that's all on Pep's mix-and-match football philosophy. He should trust the players more and put the over-thinking games aside more often.

I couldn't believe that Jack was on the bench after his performance against Chelsea. I also don't understand why changes weren't made at half time. Pep had seen the struggle so surely, he should have introduced need blood and formation. But then I'm only an armchair fan 25,000kms away.

I was 60 yards Away and I saw the same as you! Why he didn’t I don’t know.

At the moment he is the catalyst in my opinion. He gets City as well.

Thats probably true. It’s hard to day why we haven’t played well consistently. We have incredible players but look disjointed. Doesn’t help playing central defenders in full back positions. We really need a couple of wingers and of course a quality left back. How many years have we been saying that ? Got to be at least 15 years or more which is quite incredible.
I think the last time left back wasn't the potential weak link of the team was either phelan or pointon. Compared to the rest of the team of course (!)

I get why changes weren’t made at half time, we were well on top at the end of the first half and it made sense to stick with it. I don’t think the Laporte injury helped us at all as we started the second half well too, the momentum went after that.

I would have made a change a lot earlier than he did and I do think we missed Grealish in general and also Bernardo’s energy in the middle. I also get why he stuck with what he did too though as we were getting into dangerous positions, the final third let us down a lot. We’re clearly still working out how best to play with Haaland in the team. Yes he’s scored a ridiculous amount of goals but we haven’t been as good in or out of possession consistently as we were last season, it completely changes our build up play and our transitions and I think Pep is still working out the best combos.

It’ll be interesting post the world cup, personally I’m looking forward to seeing him work it out. Games like today will solidify a few of the things that clearly don’t work. I thought this year would be a bit transitional, it’s such a big change.

My thoughts on all this, is everyone saying oh world Cup, well if the city players sat on a million a month are more bothered about playing for their country, rather than the club they sre getting paid handsomely to play for, then they need fucking off
So fuck them off and get who ?

The worrying thing at the moment is that we are conceding goals and conceding big chances. They could have been 1 or 2 up before they eventually scored. Ortega was our man of the match against Chelsea. I'd like to see our XG this season compared to the XG of the past two seasons, because it just feels higher. Even against United, probably our best performance so far, we criminally let them score 3.

Maybe it's as simple as getting Walker back and getting Rodri more protection with Bernie next to him, but there's a chance there's something else going on. Only so long you can have dramatic comebacks and last minute winners before you suffer it the other way.
