Like many terms within languages, there isn't a literal translation, but the closest I could think of is the F word, but not with the same power that it has on the English language.

Just to give you an example, many folks would call their best friends "putos" as a friendly banter. "Hey puto, what are we doing tonight?"

As with everything, it is a matter of intent and context.

Edit to add a football example:

as a River Plate fan, I might sing a song that says "los de Boca son todos putos" (Boca fans are all fag**ts) and my Boca friends and family memebers (all of them which I love) wouldn't take any kind of personal offense. It is just a song that we sing on a football context.

It is caveman like and ignorant? Yeah, but nobody really means it.

3.Why would I want France to win?

To insult a lady it would be "puta" finishing with an "a" to indicate you are talking about a female in the spanish language. It could also be used to mean prostitute, but the most common use and the one that is used in all football related chants is fagg*t, like a rapper would use on a rap battle in the 90's ×D

Not at all. Just helping someone who thought ‘puto’ was a female insult. Telling me that ‘puto’ is the male version when it’s clear from the thread seems pedantic, however.
