I don’t know whether this is a new quote or whether they’ve added the overweight bit in themselves, but anyway…

I'd give him some slack, it can be pretty depressing having a long term injury and trying to stay in peak condition, especially in the modern era where you have to stay in shape 24/7, for pretty much 52 weeks of the year, for 20+ years.

Admittedly at City's level there's not much room for these errors.

As long as Pep's had a word and he gets his head down now all should be good. He won't get many more of those with Pep though.

It was fairly clear what Pep was hinting at without the latest clarification.

No excuse for a professional athlete to be out of shape,it's unacceptable.

He’ll rightly get pelters for that

We’d be laughing our bollocks off at Shaw or Sancho

How overweight can you get in 10 days?

Anyway I guess I was wrong for assuming the best of Phillips, but also right that if someone’s overweight Pep will come out and say it.

Samir Nasri was pretty much sacked for it. And Nasri had already amply proven that he was a very skilful player. My guess is that Phillips is on probation. He has to prove himself to Pep, and if he does, this will just seem like a bad memory.

I wouldn't cut him any slack. He's a very well paid professional athlete and, I'm presuming, not behaving like one.

not even the quote in the article.

'Kalvin Phillips is not fit,' Guardiola said. 'He did not arrive in the best condition to train and play.'

- Article from 2017 saying that Thomas Christiansen made him cut down on unhealthy food and change his diet to trim down his body fat. Quotes from Phillips saying “you love a chocolate cake after a Sunday dinner but…” etc

- Just read another article from 2021 by Henry Winter where Phillips says he loved having takeaways regularly before Bielsa came in but then he lost a stone under Bielsa.

“I was a bit chunky,” he admits. “I wasn’t in the greatest of shape. The manager said to everyone, he wanted us to lose weight. We had to get the body fat down. He said we had to eat less food. I just ate some sweet potato wedges and some normal barbecue chicken. The way the chefs prepare it’s just a lot cleaner. Every week I’m reducing how much I eat. It’s hard work.

“If you come in on your weight target and your body fats are good then you can eat what you want. You can have ketchup! But say I went home and had a big fry-up for breakfast, came in here and I was overweight then the manager will look at me as if to say, ‘what are you doing?’ He just thinks whenever your weight’s low you play better.”

- Comments from 2021 by Andy Townsend where he says he had heard rumours that Phillips returned to training overweight after the Euros

- Now Pep saying he’s returned overweight after the World Cup

I wasn’t aware of Phillips long-term issue with food/eating unhealthily and to be frank… a total lack of professionalism. If Bielsa (and now Pep) can’t get him to eat properly when he’s not got club chefs cooking for him, then nobody will.

Pep wouldn't say such a thing in public if he's not super pissed off.

He's got until the new year to get himself fit and ready, there's two starts in the cup games waiting for him if he's available and he needs to start making a contribution after the best part of half the season injured.

Any comments about him being a waste are just moronic, he will prove his worth eventually. It's almost as if we didn't see the same comments about ake for 2 seasons.
