Lack of pace on the wings

The only reason we gave Mahrez an extension was due to letting both Raz and Jesus leave in the same window, we should have had the balls to let all 3 go, but we shit out and handed him a contract he didn’t deserve.
But it's already backfired for me, hopefully he will step up but I will be amazed if he does.

He already seems to be settling into semi-retirement and enjoying the financials' of that deal.

I find it utterly bizarre that we’ve left ourselves in this current situation, was it just negligence because we were so concentrated on getting Erling through the door?

Gomez, waste of time, may as well cut our losses and shift him out to a CFG team and at least get an experienced left back through the door until we have time to spend big on a decent young left back.

Gundo coming to end of career, we are talking about pace in this thread, so no way can we carry Kev and Gundo in a midfield 3 any more, certainly can’t be starting games. Out of contract in summer.

Bernie wants to go, seems like we may be getting a period of not playing to max now as way of ensuring he definitely gets his move.

Kev has to be managed, ridiculous to have expected him to play these 3 games in a week, but we should have players around him freeing him up.

Mahrez, no chance of getting rid, but he should just be a bench player for us.

Grealish, imo, looks and will continue to look average until we get a proper let back so that he can come inside and stop hugging that left touchline.

Need to let a couple of the centre halves go, hopefully Laporte will go to Spain so we can get decent money for him, then we need to get someone like Gvardiol in.

Some serious work on the squad to be done to get pace and energy into the side - I think we need to let Gundo and Bernie go, get Bellingham in.

Top of list also needs to be a rapid winger, hopefully the rumours about Leao are true.

I agree, as I’ve just said in my other post, huge mistake giving him the contract, but Pep is just making it worse by starting him at the moment, crazy.

FFP has definitely played a negative role in what we can do in the market. Mahrez should have been moved on but imo we took the safe financial decision after letting raz, Jesus go.

Pep is playing Grealish and Mahrez because their attitude is good and let’s face it with their long deals I would be smiling everyday!

Ruthless Pep has left the building. He is going soft on the squad this season. This squad has brought him so much success and he is in a tough spot between demanding more and having to acknowledge the type of mentality needed to go again. Recent comments suggests he is starting to bite back. His man management skills will be needed. The longer you stay the more complicated things become.

At least we don’t take a season off every other year like the scousers.

In a nutshell, the players need to get back up again to the level required or move the ones not willing to do that along. So forget all the things we don’t have and look at the quality we do. Players are not performing and that is ultimately where the problem starts and finishes.

That’s why I think we need to at least bring one player in this window, surely we can find a half decent left back, I know he can’t defend but surely we could get someone like Guerreiro for example for cheap money as only 6 months left on deal? Just someone that can attack with a left foot!

Imo the club and pep is making a big statement to the players who are seemingly discontent. He is starting players who are in the right headspace. Now these players might not be good enough to warrant a starting position and we will drop points. There is a bigger fight on here and one pep must win. So on reflection now. The point at Everton was a good one. Not in terms of the league but more so to any player having an off season. The club would rather leave you out and drop points. The boss is getting the support he needs.

I suggest we all take a different view of what’s actually going on this season. So well done to Ake, Akanji, Mahrez, Grealish for trying win us games. Shame on the other players for putting the club in a difficult position.

It’s abit like the strikes happening across the country. We all support them until it starts to effect our daily routine. Some players are doing the same thing this season. Stand with pep. Keep them out of the first team.

Pep chooses Grealish and Mahrez because he wants to slow the game down, keep control of the ball and minimise counter attacks.

Posters might not agree with the tactics but the players are doing what they are told and doing it well.

Someone mentioned it in an earlier post, when Pep arrived his mantra was that we have all this skill in the squad so I want them to follow my direction until they arrive in the final third then they are free to attack how they see fit…and it worked.

That's never been Pep's mantra at City, it was an anecdote from his first few weeks coaching in 2008 from Henry.

I really don't get it. Correct me if I am wrong but A world class coach tells two out of three in the front to slow the game down with a striker who doesn't do much of link up play & we play with 3 CBs at the back and a midfield where only creativity comes from Kevin.

He is still a superb player, but he can't play 3 games in a week anymore, and if he does he has to have a free role and that's when he becomes a problem.

His fitness / condition is the issue, not his ability.
I just don't see how you go from being world class to being an issue for the team in the space of a week. Few players can go full tilt in 3 consecutive games when they play like him. Especially so when NONE of the others are pulling up trees to lighten the load. It's a selection and management issue, and as we know, these seem to happen from time to time.

Because he had a 6 week holiday, then came back for the dippers game fired up , decent at Leeds but struggled on Saturday.

He's not looked great in terms of fitness for a few seasons, we need to take better care of him otherwise his career will be over quickly.

That's the issue and problem with the other players. Without KDB we have little creativity, the rest have to shape up, we are carrying a few too many passengers at this time and coming into a crazy busy month that's not healthy.

Even though I agree with much of what you said... But the point vs Everton was NOT a good one under any circumstance. It was bad. Period.

One point in a home fixture against this Everton team is two points lost in anyone's book.

We are 7 points off the top, that's more than enough of a gap.

Bernardo is the only one going from that trio, the best player at that.

Grealish and Mahrez know they are on a good thing, on long-term, incredible money.

Mahrez will be here longer than anyone!
If PSG are (still) interested in Riyad, he would go there but his wife is not keen on the idea so he may well stay as long as he can.

His form is on the up again so let's hope that trend continues.

Pep's whole philosphy is about controllling the game. People may not like it - I personally do - but it's proved a rather successful approach for Pep so far in his managerial career and City have benefited from it.

Wenger was similar being stubborn to a philosophy, but football changes and we have only 1 non-Pep player left and it shows.

We just gave Mahrez a contract until he turns 34. Watching a 33-34 year old Mahrez is going to be fun! We also gave Grealish and Phillips 6-year deals. Unless the club is willing to invest in a top class winger when those 2 are still at the club, people are going to have to get used to watching those 2!
