He'll be ok when he's fully up to speed and had some game time. Problem is it's hard to see where we can really afford to give him minutes except at the end of games like these when it's already done and dusted.
Personally dont think he can play as a lone DM from what ive seen so far, looks too timid and doesnt really spread the play. But nowadays we dont play with a lone DM anyways.

Needs time in the film room, watching Rodri’s movement to create angles to receive the ball or simply creating a lane for someone else.

At the moment, he’s still playing “DM Patrol,” but that position in this team is so much more, and so much more important.

His passing range is good, he has bite, and he’s got a shot on him. Once he understands the job better, we can make a more studied assessment.

In most teams, he’d get far more playing time. Sadly, this is Man City, where not only is a dropped point a sin, but he’s understudy to the best in the business…in the world!

He has a part to play giving Rodri relief this season, but needs to get up to speed, esp for next season, or we will get rid. Pep and the club have no time for passengers.

Lastly, it’ll be interesting to see what Perrone looks like. He might be a great addition to the midfield, a dud, or the end of Kalvin at City in 18 months.

Adding Perrone & Bellingham to our midfield, while losing one or both of Bernie & Gundo, would be an instant lowering of the age of our midfield. Replacing KDB is going to be the hard part going forward!
Rodri's movement too receive the ball, the angles he creates, his drive into midfield, the lobbed passes into Mahrez/Jack, his posistioning and leadership, what a player.

Phillips is not that type of player, we would have been better off keeping Lavia.

That's the critical point for me. We know he can cover ground and spray the ball about, but it's running the game and controlling our play which is what he needs to do. Against Southampton he was stood in areas where he couldn't get the ball. He needed to drop back to be in a position to always be the out ball and then spread the ball the other way. It will take a lot of time to develop, I just wonder why we decided he was a better option that an academy kid who could have spent 3 years learning the role and had 10+ ahead of him.

But I'm sure Pep spoke to Bielsa and Phillips was very good for Leeds in a slightly different role. Clearly he feels he can adapt. Confidence is a huge part of it. He might not feel he's part of the team yet and doesn't have the confidence to get on the ball as much as we need him to. If Rodri stays fit and we have a big CL game that we need to see through then Phillips is a great option to come on and give us some added energy and physicality in the middle of the park.

We had to wait 18 months for Rodri to get up to speed , and he was really bad when he first arrived. Now he’s the first name on the teamsheet

why wouldn’t we afford Phillips the same chance ?

Correct we need to see Philips have a run of games then we judge him at least middle of next season but he needs game time

Send him out on loan, we don't have time to be "getting him to to speed"
Jesus, look at all of Peps signings , there are only a handful that hit the ground running. Most need at least a season to feel part of the team

Ake
Rodri
Cancelo
Grealish
Bernado
Mahrez

all are vastly different players now to when they joined

This season to adapt, get up to speed or feel part of the team is a load of bollox.
These are elite footballers we are talking about not some overweight Sunday league players who we pulled out of the bar. If they don't feel part of the team then they have no business at city.

People saying it took Rodri 18 months!! Nonsense he was decent from the off, it took time to get up to the speed of the league but it was obvious he was quality .

Fascinating to have 80 pages (more than most of our first 11) and such dramatic views on a lad who has played 24 minutes of Premier League football for us.

As with most players we sign under Pep, and especially in this case because of his injury, I'll reserve judgement until the end of the season.

From what I saw at Leeds, Kalvin has the basic qualities needed to do a job here, like his tackling and passing range, and he's always seemed like a lad with a good head on his shoulders and a willingness to learn and improve.

Doesn't mean he'll be a success, but I find it beyond a joke and utterly disingenuous to judge him already and make calls about loaning him out or getting rid entirely.

From the first 10mins of that community shield final vs pool you could tell he was going to be a top player. Phillips has played about 300 mins so far and looks like he belongs at a mid-table team. Id sell him this summer.

The fact that he’s played so few minutes tells its own story though.

He was unlucky with his injury, or rather how it was initially handled, but he had a fantastic opportunity to work on his fitness at the World Cup, and importantly the chance to do this without missing any further games for City.

How many players would typically get that chance in the middle of a season? It was a unique opportunity for him to get himself into contention, and he completely wasted it by coming back in worse shape than when he left.

We’re an elite club and we need elite players, but this bloke is miles off it I’m afraid. He was diabolical against Southampton and Guardiola clearly doesn’t trust him given how few minutes he’s played. The biggest problem though is that, for some reason, we gave him a six year contract, so we’re stuck with him now. Hopefully he does improve and offer something, because if he doesn’t he’ll prove a very expensive mistake.

Right but what do we do if we sell Phillips? Spend £40m on another back-up DM?
