It's Quiet 17 - Glory Thread

Reliable too, coming from Jack. Interesting one Maddison. Brilliant player who has linked well with a rapid Vardy for a few years and assuming it would involve a change of style in some aspects.

(Not sarcasm) it would be interesting to see who he would choose. Us with a load of rotation/time on the bench (Jack) or Newcastle as a guaranteed starter at the start of their project.
Would still be 26 in summer and definitely offers some dynamism that we lack in midfield- doesn’t mind having a pop from distance either. Apparently a top lad as well with a really good personality- I think post Mendy and cancelo now we are probably more than ever looking for real team players

I wanted Maddison as an alternative to Grealish but signing him as well wouldn't be a bad option

Maddison has played almost his entire career in the middle as opposed to Phil and Jack who have mainly operated out wide. Think he'd be great for us either way. Especially with only one year left on his deal.

Was basing the both sides fullback off what Tolmie said. I personally do t care if we buy a left-back or not as we don't seem to play with fullbacks any more. It's usually 3 centre-backs with two DMs in front now (Lewis has been doing this).

Seems to have been a choice by Pep in terms of tactics. If however he decides to switch back to 4 at the back, then yes we definitely need a left-back and possibly a right back. Lewis is very good inverting as a DM, but I'm not sure yet as an out and out right back.
Ahh okay.

I do think the tactics have been forced by the lack of attacking fullbacks and the system created is a reaction to the inform players we have and the struggles we've had this season.

Now cancelo has left bar Gomez who's as fringe as it gets, nobody is valued as an attacking threat at full back. Walker gets 1 assist a season and is needed for covering with pace at the back, agree with Lewis he seems to be valued as more of a possession controlling full back a la Zinchenko but on the right side and Ake is a CB by trade. I do worry with where this leaves us going forward in terms of predictability of the line-up and game plan.

I dont imagine pep would be playing reece james/ james chilwell as inverted fullbacks if they joined tomorrow for example.

I think we genuinely get Leao IF, he obviously doesn’t sign that contract at Milan it’s all gone quiet on that front.

Yeah agreed. Regardless of knowing he was one for the future, I think Pep's probably been as underwhelmed as us by Gomez and possibly had to adapt his formation partly as a result of that. I'm sure he'd like the option of attacking fullbacks given the choice, but we go with what we've got til summer it seems.

And then what for Cancelo?

I'd be amazed if Bayern pay that clause, so he either comes back to us with his tail between his legs begging for forgiveness, or he's going elsewhere for way less. Or maybe Bayern offer less I suppose, which we'd undoubtedly take.

Phillips won't play left back, where's this come from?
From the fact Delph played there (did a good job to be fair) and with Phillips being a midfielder he would be bit more comfortable playing the inverted full back role. But again like Foden it wouldn't be wise to play them in that role for very long.

We know exactly why Gomez stayed with us,who also isn't a recognized left back, nothing mysterious about it. We've spent years without a recognized left back Cancelo wasn't one either . So why so bothered about it now.
We may not have had a natural left back in the squad last season, but we had Cancelo, Zinchenko and Ake who could play there.

We’ve now ended up the situation where we have Ake and Gomez, with Gomez currently looking so far off the required standard you have to ask serious questions as to why he was bought.

Ake has been playing very well this season, but he has had injury problems, and missed the whole of the run in last season.

That’s where the concern comes from. At a club the scale of City, with the resources available, the current situation should not have been allowed to develop.
