I mean he was never the biggest but looks like hes lost about a stone or so. I imagine he'll have a bit of muscle to build back up.

Surely they would have had him doing weights and low impact stuff within days of the op? I'd be surprised if he's lost much weight/fitness, unless he was still really ill after the surgery.

My first thought when I saw the images was that he looked like he’d lost a lot of weight.

As a general rule though, the quicker you lose it the quicker you can put it back on.

I feel for Phil a bit - every time he seems to build up a bit of form he has a setback of some sort, be it injury, illness, his international manager etc, which takes time to come back from. One day he’ll get a run without interruption and we’ll see exactly what he’s capable of.

Great news he’s back though.

How long can you start running after an operation like that? May take a while to build match fitness back up if it’s zero movement whilst you recuperate.
The surgery itself is generally fairly minor and easy to recover from. The unknown is the appendicitis that can be quite severe, a significant septic inflammatory response can be quite debilitating.

I'd love to see him get a run out in the semi but I'd be shocked if Pep uses him against Arsenal unless there is an emergency. The way they're clicking right now I can't see disturbing the balance they have right now for the big matches.

I wouldn't start him tomorrow, but I'd be looking to give him a good 30 minutes so he's available to start against Arsenal, even if he's then subbed off early. A huge boost having him back. His energy levels at both ends of the pitch make such a difference, as does his movement. Gundogan wasn't particularly influential in either game against Bayern so having Phil back gives us the option to stick Bernie central alongside De Bruyne and have Foden wide right. Also means Grealish can have a bit of a rest without us losing as much quality. Good problems to have at this stage of the season.

This seasons chance of success depends on players like Foden coming back in when needed and getting us over the line. Hope he gets up to speed soon.
