Here is their Effective Role (Versatility) Map, left side is the opposition goal, Bernardo is the blue box and Kovavic is the yellow box.

There is only some overlap, which is the role we both agree Kovacic could play well in a Pep side. But there is a big effective area where he cannot replace Bernardo’s contributions.

why are you comparing bernardo. he is a gundo replacement. make a map with gundo might be a better comparison.

Because “replacement for Bernardo” was the comparison to which I was responding that I disagreed with.

I have already said he is more a replacement for Gundogan, even if they are also different style players.

what do you mean gundo NO. pretty much the same player as him before gundo was given more freedom to go forward when we played with a false 9 .

alright. still contend the point that he is very different to gundo. for me they are more similar than different.

Gundog's been playing as a No 8, with the inverted FB/CB allowing him to get forward, leaving him with less first line defensive responsibilities.

Based on what I've seen, I'm happy to give him a 2 year extension. Is Kovacic more Gundog or Rodri? I'd say he's neither. He's more a Jordan Henderson-type all rounder, than a specialist.

Think we might be going for more direct players now we have Haaland.

Midfield runners but players who can still play possession football at a very good level if need be.

Kovacic is really good and getting the ball up the pitch on his own. Will be great for those quick transitions Haaland seems to thrive off.
 
Has always impressed me and we where linked to him prior to moving to Chelsea.

I can see the logic in it.

Replacing Gundogan and Bernardo (KDB being a year older).

If we get Bellingham and Kovacic probably not as strong as been very fortunate with the world class players we have had.
 
honestly, upgrade on Gundogan. Would be delighted if we were in for him should Ilkay decide to leave.

I hope he signs too. But none of what you said makes him better than Kovacic.

Whilst I broadly agree with your sentiments in general as things stand, most importantly, we’ve yet to add the Pep/City factor into that equation (and take out the years of turmoil and uncertainty at Chelsea).

If anyone on the planet can improve a midfielders game significantly, it’s Pep and I’d really fancy him doing a great job with Kovacic, and bring him at least to Ilkay level on many things.
