United (N) | FA Cup Final | Post-Match Thread

Worst player from City obviously. And yes, it was clear penalty, no one will convince me it wasn't a handball. Grealish made a move with hand, obvious penalty.
Handball doesn’t always mean penalty, as for Jacks performance, did you not notice them doubling up when he got the ball, or the shift he put in going the other way, it’s why he was goal side of his man when he gave the pen away, his performance was one of graft as opposed to the normal guile and we won, Pep left him on till the 89th minute, and replaced him with Ake for his aerial ability, give it a wobble fella

That's pretty easy to explain.

A lot of our "control" involved being ahead for nearly 75 minutes of the game, so we didn't need to attack as much, but we were ahead because of two goals with a very low xG - the kind of shots that go in once in a blue moon. Even then, the first one went in because Gundo struck it absolutely perfectly, the second, because he mishit it. Both shots had an xG of about 0.04 (i.e. if an average player had those changes 25 times, he'd likely score once).

The penalty came from nothing, but once it's given it's likely to be scored, and has an xG of 0.79 - which makes up nearly half of United's xG.

Occasionally xG says something significant about an individual game, but it's more likely to give you an idea of how a team is performing over time.
Kudos for the explanation, but as I've stated before on other threads etc, football has too many moving parts for a stat like this to mean anything.

Oh, "Worst player from City". So you've already changed your opinion that he was the worst player on the pitch? And who is saying it wasn't handball? It clearly was, as a penalty was awarded.

Farce is exactly what it is. And refs, the PL, PiGMOL and the FArce are more than happy that it can deliver exactly what they have a mind to give. it has become a tool for manipulation.

The handball law in football must be the most convoluted law in any world sport that has a set of laws. Once upon a time the instruction was that you could not play the ball with yer hand, and yer 'hand' was the whole of yer arm upto the shoulder.. Simple, obvious, until some training grounds were witnessing teams making sure their arm was sticking out a wee bit. And then IFAB comes along with a 'catch-all' that confuses refs as to how to interpret the new law. Cue a series of bizarre decisions that never seemed to match what went on. Jack's 'handball' would have been classified as accidental when I started watching football, but the Rags have been well-versed in spotting a finger nail touching a ball as it travels across the pitch at speed, and Coote was ever ready to oblige their claims.
A few seasons before var was introduced.
I can still see the ball lightly brushing Anelkas' gloved hand just before he put the cross in for Goater to score.
City would have beaten the rags home and away that season, were it not for that goal being ruled out.

This is my whole point. Even asking this question none of us have given the same answer, which proves the interpretation & opinion conundrum. \0/

I'll thrown another spanner in the works if I may... Who judges if the flight & trajectory of the ball was affected & if an advantage was lost or gained?

Again this will be down to the interpretations & opinions of the side making the pass/cross/shot, the team trying to stop the pass/cross/shot, the referee & VAR officials.

As you've said which highlights the issue:

As you can see, herein lies the problem. One man's "opinion" on handball is another man's it should have gone this way, or that & "The ref's a corrupt twat with an agenda against us!", or "He's a decent ref for making the correct call (which I just happen to agree with)..."

How do we resolve this to cover EVERYONE'S opinion/interpretation? \0/
At the end of the day, the referees' decision is final. He/she can overrule var when appropriate.
The other option is mob rule/ who screams loudest.

It was clear handball and penalty for me. Roma should have penalty vs Sevilla on Wednesday for handball too. Grealish was the worst player on the pitch and maybe there is a debate to start Foden on Saturday? I think Grealish will start anyway but it was a pen.
Penalty my f#####g arse what a load of nonsense.

Watched the whole match yet again and paid close attention to the penalty the other team got. Did Super Jack have any intention of cheating? Of course not! Was he trying to gain an unfair advantage? Certainly not. Was any handball intentional? No chance. Did the linesman signal for an offence? He did not. Did the ref give the penalty? No. So did he make a clear and obvious mistake? Hardly.

So there you are chaps. We are all wrong and they got a penalty which they had earned. Maintaining a fine bit of FA cup 'istry and tradishun.
Watch the linesman talking to Bernardo coming off at half time, he clearly say “I don’t think it was” in relation to that penalty.
Shit decision.

It was a penalty under the daft rules but he certainly didn't make a move. Think you're being a bit over the top trying to make your point.

Thanks for the good wishes everyone. Sat with mum now showing her the movies we took, though she's mostly asleep and the quick visit from the carers is soon. She stood up briefly with the home physio team today which is brilliant, her first time out of bed since rushed to hospital February 15th. It's still a few days at a time, but there's hope there will be more months left, and it's still two fingers to that hospital who moved her to end of life care telling us she had days to live - in March. Lay in bed on oxygen in a hospital bed in her own lounge is better than being in that place.. 5 weeks in that place and condemed by them to "hours, days a week left at most" after 4, but now had 10 weeks at home with her. Though me and my sister never expected to be live in carers... But here we are.. So time with my boy and my "normal" life is precious, as is being with mum.. I wish there were two of me.. And I'm trapped between looking to the future for my son and seeing the past all the time as my mum fades, whilst trying to be in the now without having a breakdown.. And so desperately trying to get into the "treble" feeling as city have been my life, this is huge huge, it matters so much to me.. But cos of it being right now, it's just spinning my head. And I know I'm mentioning it in many of my posts, but we're deeply traumatised really.

Anyway, enough doom. Just wanted to say thanks. My son says he didn't "repeat any bad words" at school today so that's good! He enjoyed the final and I was so proud to take him, so proud, I missed mum with me, but cried for many reasons when it sunk in we were going to win. I was his age for the 81 final (no one took me but I remember the day clearly) and here I was with my longed for much loved son at the fa cup final (my 16th trip, his 1st). Wish it was him WITH my mum rather than instead of her, wish they were either side of me, but mum was in my head and heart. We had a brilliant day though, I felt truly happy.

Long shot I kniw, but does anyone have one of the official all blue city cup final scarves they were selling in wembkey, they were £20. I got one for my 6 yr old but mum wants one and I messed up by not bringing one home. She could have his, but having it in bed it will get stained with food and probable wee, so even when washed he doesn't want it back, so I think I've failed as a daughter AND as a Mum in one go there! :(

What a way to win though. And that goal, that start - fuck me! And laughing at the rags will never get old :)
