Just Stop Oil protests

Not sure on your first point, on social media I think you’re absolutely right but less so in other conversations I’ve had about it. It can stir a response in those that are sympathetic to their cause but apathetic in their actions too. I think the painting one was a lot more impactful with that than the sporting disruptions though (which is partly down to the messaging they were able to get out at the time and also a societal thing that’s for a much deeper conversation!)

Agree about the different targeting being more successful if wanting to directly impact public opinion though, I made that exact same point in my first post.

Bit of a divergence from the subject, I guess my problem is that while im Green ( voted green in the past ) im also a realist. my view is our only way out of climate change is a technological invention way. all these protests are way after the horse has bolted. the human race could stop using oil in its entirety today and I still think its too late to stop it. the second the permafrost in Siberia started to melt, spewing millions of tons of methane into the air, was when I started to believe it was too late to stop it. at most we are in a mitigation stage.

we can move to as much green ( solar / wind ) as we want but without a way to store the power its not going to work long run so we need a breakthrough in battery tech there. either chemical batteries or some sort of gravity battery. a solar farm 2/3% the size of the Sahara could supply enough electricity to supply the worlds needs but no way to store/ship it.

to me, while we're years away from it fusion is the best possible way out of it( im hoping AI will speed up the development ), cheap abundant green energy, plenty for all. and then build extra reactors to power CO2 scrubbers to literally clean the atmosphere. Currently CO2 scrubbers are very energy intensive (maybe the massive solar farm idea in Deserts could be set up to do this ).

I agree, they have a right to protest, but they have no right to disturb the population in the way they do.

If they were stopping you rushing a lovedone to A&E with a life threatening injury, would you think otherwise?

I see your point, so you would have no issue with their current protests at sporting events? These do not endanger anyones life.

They chose to piss people off by doing their stunts and by making others suffer. If that isn’t worthy of a good kicking what is.

Perhaps I come from a different generation. If I act like a **** I know I risk personal pain and then I’d have to figure out if it was worth the risk. All this we can do what we want and get no consequences for our action is bollocks.

I am an old **** (mid 50's) so probably not a different generation.

the consequences are an arrest and a criminal record.
Thats also the consequence for you if you give them a good kicking, unless they are putting you in danger and disrupting a sporting event is not putting you in damger

They do not have the right to protest in any of the ways they have so far.
I would love to see them get a kicking.
Is that all the protests?

they have every right to disrupt sporting events as long as they are willing to take the consequences (arrest, punishment, criminal record)
They are very close to the line regarding blocking roads due to disruption to fire and paramedic services.

As for giving them a kicking, you are more than welcome to do it as long as you are also willing to accept the consequences of your actions (arrest, punishment, criminal record)

lots of people seem to have forgotten that part of living in a free society is protest and part of protest is civil disobedience. I have taken part in civil disobedience and worse in the past as part of anti fascist demonstrations. I was always aware of the consequences of my actions and willing to bare those consequences.
Just so you are aware some of my actions I regret and some I am very proud of.

Civil disobedience in most cases mean breaking the law, the police should be moving these twunts on straight away.

Making them the martyrs and not the public being their victims of convenience.

No, I have issue with all the ways they are protesting.

They‘re pissing off the wrong people though. Ordinary folks getting on with their lives driving to work, shopping, watching sport, whatever, none of whom can ’stop oil’ or anything else. They need to target the decision makers in government or the oil companies.

I guarantee if some prick threw orange paint at my car or tried to stop my wife enjoying her shopping I’d just knock the fucker out, and no wasting time with bullshit posturing and arguing first. Though I do have autism and impatience issues, most people are probably more tolerant.

What happens if it was a bloke 6ft 10 and built like a.brick shithouse?

i support their aims.

they have the right protest. not sure they have chosen the best ways, but not i may well be wrong

the public deffo do not have the right to give them a good kicking
I’d like to know how they got to Wimbledon? I doubt it was on foot wearing clogs and a fish skin suit? That’s what annoys me - you can’t complain about something you yourself use. There’s not much in the modern world that doesnt involve oil.

arrogant and misguided - they believe they can stop the inevitable... they can't and won't. Best they can hope for is an insignificant delay in the planet's ultimate demise, when no humans will be left in any case. They fail to recognise that it was climate change on such a cataclysmic scale they could not even begin to imagine that allowed life on earth to start in the first place. A Band-Aid on a stage-4 cancer patient.

Bastards, what are they thinking :)

If you think for one minute that inbetween snaffling another rich tea biscuit and a swig of Earl Grey they care one jot about anyone but themselves? I will go to the bottom of my carbon friendly stairs mate.
