Keeping digging, Hendo, I am sure eventually you’ll find what’s left of your integrity.

But most desperate of all are Henderson's comments regarding the LGBTQ+ community who came to believe that the Liverpool captain, England's most senior midfielder, had been their vocal supporter. They now feel betrayed. "I am sorry that they feel like that."

Credit to David Ornstein and, in particular, Adam Crafton, journalists with The Athletic, for pushing Henderson on the subject. But much like the golfers, the arguments soon evaporate. "I am not a politician," he reminds us. "I am not an expert," he later offers.

The appeal to ignorance over an issue he claims to have agonised over is his last refuge and it is when the nonsense arguments are stripped away that the most candid statement comes. "Basically I had to make the decision on what was best for me and my family."

"I'm sorry you feel like that" is possibly the most craven, weasely phrase in the English language. He's said the word sorry without actually apologising and passively-aggressively passed the blame onto those his actions have hurt.

The last person I heard use that phrase was Priti Patel, great company you're keeping, eh "Hendo"?

? Not quite clear what's threatening it. Tv rights alone are assured for the foreseeable future. The China market can only keep expanding. Same for the U.S. market.
I personally don't think the Saudi league is a threat. But we'll see. For the minute, I see it as a big payoff end-of-career old folks home.
The biggest threat is from the clubs themselves. Sure the big boys will always do well. But how long will clubs in the lower echelons of the PL carry on for?
Once the line of foreign investors runs out.....

What the fuck did the simpleton and his advisers think would happen?

He holds no sway in his own country, let alone one, nobody could possibly influence.

He's a thick, mouth-breathing tosser, extolled by the media due to the club he once played for. He's been placed on a pedestal he is not worthy of - morally, nor his footballing ability

Of course, it wasn't about the money.

700k a week tax-free might say otherwise.

Henderson would of gained more respect by just coming out and saying he took the money because it was too good to turn down.
All this reminds me of the famous saying of you should never mix football with politics or religion. I can remember Fowler and McManaman getting into a whole lot of trouble for wearing tee shirts supporting the Liverpool Dockers..
Can’t stand Henderson, he’s a bit thick tbh and he’s a hypocrite of the highest order, come to think of it, he was well suited for you Dippers.

Not sure about that as everything is political really - football is a reflection of society. But the problem is when celebrity millionaires have to speak up for social struggles cuz the media or government won't- we shouldn't have to rely on these so called ambassadors

From our perspective, I actually hope they reject the Saudi's offer

I think these are going to be right on our heels, but I also think that they will lose out because of their defence, they are a threat, but not something we aren't used to

Losing Salah ends their title chances, but without Salah they still get top 4 and champions league

So if they accept now, they pocket £200+ mil which they will need to rebuild their defence and still get top 4

Fast forward 12 months, Salah is 32, into his final year of his contract and they'll find it hard for him to renew with £1.5mil a week in the back of his head

They'll get about £100mil -120mil next summer, they'd be under pressure to sell if they can't get Salah to renew
I doubt they’ll get £100m next summer, judging on what Mahrez went for at the same age and similar profile in the Arab world.

He was hardly going to come out (pun intended) and say he’s an amoral mercenary, is he?

He‘s tried to justify it and people aren’t buying it. He’s given his reasons now and he won’t need to approach the subject again. He can simply refer back to this interview.

He's got shredded on the latest issue of the Guardian podcast.

i think its a bit disingenuous of henderson to say hes not an expert being at liverpool that long you'd think he was an expert on dicks

To be fair to him and other footballers, they probably don't give a shite about the alphabet community, however they get pushed into making statements. He should just be honest and say that although he doesn't agree with the culture towards the alphabet lot in Saudi, he's there to work and to make money for his family. Tell them that our government and other governments and institutions around the world still do business with the Saudis so have a dig at them instead.
This is a good point and is why I've held off criticising Henderson too much despite him digging a rather big hole for himself.

"Pushed into making statements" is probably very close to the truth on this particular matter. And I wouldn't be surprised if it was Liverpool themselves who pushed him into championing LGBTQ+ rights, given he was club captain and all that. Remember that Henderson signed the book of condolence in Liverpool after the Queen died as well - again, it wouldn't surprise me if he was asked by the club to do that. Of course, the fallout from that was seeing Liverpool fans all over social media spitting their dummies out as we know many of them aren't particularly big fans of the Royal Family so I think the club misjudged that one if indeed they put him up to it. Let's also not forget that a few years ago, a Liverpool youth team playing a tournament in Poland went on a tour of Auschwitz while they were over there and were given a stack of candles to light while there. Trouble is, they weren't plain candles - astonishingly they were Liverpool FC branded candles because as we know, it always has to be about them.

Of course, if Liverpool were indeed involved in putting Henderson forward as some sort of LGBTQ+ ambassador, well instead of sitting back and seeing him take all the flak for his move to Saudi they might want to explain why they were more than happy to accept Saudi money for him.

Listen don’t start with that one. Every club in the country through the years has had its prized plum.. Liverpool no different.
Never ever rated Henderson and making him a captain will go down in history as one of the biggest jokes given a captain is supposed to lead by example and follow in the footsteps of past captains like Emlyn.. Phil Thompson.. Souey.. Hansen etc.. even Gerrard as good as he was a prized plum.

The gap isn't massive, but Salah is better, more famous (especially for Muslim fans), and more important to Liverpool than Mahrez was to us

He won't be going anywhere unless it's a 9 figure fee
Mahrez is the captain of the reigning African Cup of Nations. Algeria is the biggest country in Africa.

He’s probably closer than you think to Salah.
