Car Insurance

Genuinely interested to know the reason why this is. What is the thinking behind it?
As an example, If I have full NCD, let's say 70%, and say I'm paying £300 for my car insurance.

If I did not have NCD, then the price for the same insurance would be £1000 (i.e. without the 70% No Claims Discount).
In addition to age, this explains why new drivers are expected to pay eye-watering amounts for their first year's insurance

Now, admittedly, if you were to make one claim and you don't have NCD protection, you wouldn't lose all of your NCD, but it could drop to 50%, so then you'd be up to £500 for the year. If you're unlucky and had two claims, you could be up to £700 or £800 etc.

Insurance companies will always then put your base price up the next year if you've had a claim - this is regardless of whether you have protected NCD or not.

NCD doesn't protect against your price going up. but it gives you protection against a double-whammy.

Just had my renewal drop today from the AA and it's gone up from £170 to £277 with no changes. That's a 63% rise. I'm in my 60s and have never made one single claim in my life. Comparison sites here I come because regardless of the quotes I'm dumping them to make a point.

They’ve gone up loads this year due to the “cost of parts.“

OK, turns out I'm not making a point after all. Compare the market has a couple of no-mark companies slightly undercutting them and the first major name (Churchill Essentials) at £300, even Hastings Direct who have been usually on the money (so to speak) have theirs at £320.

So I'm paying for the people who do put claims in I guess.

To be fair, you always are. That’s the principle of Insurance.

The many, pay for the few.

But unfortunately you also pay for the twats who dont bother having insurance or have insurance that doesn't actually cover them e.g motor traders insurance, the misuse of which is rife around Bradford and Birmingham. Yet the fine is only £300, why aren't they lobbying the government to make this £3000 ?

Then there's the fraudulent claims bunch.

Can’t disagree with you on that. Should be higher penalties, including larger fines or for businesses (more in line with Corporate Manslaughter Act, where it’s a % of revenue which is fined) or struck off Directors list etc

One thing to point out, is the rise of “Ghost Brokers”, who do a lot through Social Media offering cheap deals, and they use faked documents and your cover is not valid / worthless. If it looks too good to be true - it probably is! So I’d use the BIBA website (British Insurance Brokers Association) to check whether they are valid or not.

(Or if you get something and want to query it - just drop me a Private Message and I’m happy to help if I can. I’m not an Insurance Broker by the way; just happy to help fellow Blues)

So mine’s up in Decemeber and was bored looking on the compare websites and f*ck me, it’s getting expensive.

Anybody else around the M9 area that can point me in the direction of a decent insurance company? I’m guessing they are all going to be expensive.

What made me laugh though, even though I have been driving for 18yrs with 18yrs NCD (i’ve never had an accident) 2 of the cheapest want to fit my car with a Black Box - what is that all about? Strange

The joys of motoring. I paid somewhere around €380 last february. That's for fully comp, NCB protection. That's on a 2 year old (non electric) Tucson.

Whatever you do don't have a black box fitted. When my youngest just passed his test he was working shift work . Because he was driving regularly after 10pm they cancelled the insurance just try getting new insurance if a company has cancelled a previous policy.

No chance i will - they are for kids who have just passed the test
Thanks for the advice anyway

If anybody is thinking of going with Yoga insurance, then DON'T! They use a company called Onecall insurance and they are without doubt, the worst insurance company I have ever encountered. They don't respond to your emails. It's almost impossible to chat to anybody and they use Cowboy scouse panel beaters that send your car back in worse condition that it went in. Avoid them like the bubonic plague.

I've just got insurance with the plug in box, but I think there are different types. The one I've got only uses data for milage driven and nothing else. Or at least that's what's on the t's and c's. :-/ Either way, I've got nothing to hide on my insurance.
