European Super League | ECJ rule that UEFA and FIFA acted unlawfully in blocking Super League (p 29)

‘If’ we were found guilty then I doubt Sheikh Mansour would be selling up just because of that.
We’d either be charged wrongly or it’d be on him directly.
I did say 'proven'.

He'd have to distance himself from any suggestion of personal impropriety. It would be hugely embarrassing for the UAE.
In that case, someone else in the club hierarchy would be nominated to take the rap.

Don't worry... it won't happen. There's far too much at risk for City to be proven guilty.

Will Premier League clubs be able to join?

It appears as though Premier League clubs will not be able to join, even if the new proposal does get approved.

The UK government’s Department of Culture, Media and Sport released a statement that indicated a bill about to pass into law, which sets up a new independent football regulator, would make it illegal for British clubs to join a breakaway league.

"The attempt to create a breakaway competition was a defining moment in English football and was universally condemned by fans, clubs and the Government,” said a DCMS spokesperson.

"We took decisive action at the time by triggering the fan-led review of football governance, which called for the creation of a new independent regulator for English football. We will shortly be bringing forward legislation that makes this a reality, and will stop clubs from joining any similar breakaway competitions in the future."

The UK is no longer bound by EU law since Brexit, so clubs would not be able to appeal to the European Court of Justice.

==========

Its over. The option is not there unless the clubs are willing to never play domestic footy ever again.

Does anyone else see the irony in Florentino Perez applauding the court's decision that UEFA cannot limit commercial competition yet in the same statement promises that the ESL would 100% support and enforce the continued use of FFP?
The fucking balls on these people! They actually believe they're smarter than everyone else when in reality anyone with an ounce of intelligence can see right through the self-serving, corrupt basis of their plan. Another greedy old fuck acting like he's going to live forever.

I’d stop going. It wouldn’t be the same club and I don’t think I could support a team who basically could cause the death of the entire English game.

Even if let’s say I did go. There’s pretty much no relegation or consequence. The games would be meaningless - what enjoyment would you get out of it?
I was under the impression that it wouldnt be a closed shop. Yes if that was the case i would be shite. But i was led to believe it wasnt

Could you latch on to another team do you think?

This is the Key with a Super League, it's pretty much like the breakaway from the football league back in 1992, Even today those in the championship still win the old league title, Under the ruling that's going through parliament at the moment, Any club wanting to play in the Super League will have to give up playing in the Premier League forever, It could also be that your club could lose its English nationality and would have to play under EU laws,

The Super League would become an EU nationality and all clubs would lose any home governing bodies involment

If Madrid and Barcelona drop out of champs league and go in this super league they should take of them all there champs league trophies

If that ruling is legal.

Surely its best for English clubs to continue in the PL, with all its money & the advantages that brings us over the likes of Barcelona & Real Madrid and their shit La Liga tv deals, rather than join a super league where we get extra money but so do the Spanish clubs.
That financial advantage would be gone overnight.

It’s all a load of crap.

Greed v greed.

As long as city come out of it ok then I am fine with whatever option we end up going with. For now saying we don’t want to know is standard and expected.

Football is a political money driven sport. The fans will always lose out. Some more than others.

I would hope the club is trying to get itself into a protective position. We might just come out winners if we can leverage our position just right.

Moral outrage? Nah they don’t care so why should the fans.

If clubs have to play under European law, fans could argue the same. I'm fucking sick of Brexit. I want to visit Europe whenever

City & other affected clubs need to highlight all the other bullshit games our players are forced to play during the international breaks, the Nations League & now the expanded Club World Cup.

It's not just European club football that needs reforming. The international bollocks is long overdue a overhaul too.
OH DEAR GOD, YES

There is still a very long way to go before anything really happens and at the moment the outlook doesn't seem too bright for any new competitions. There is no reason to believe that fan reaction is any more favourable than two years ago. City and United have already said they are not interested and without premier league clubs, the leading German clubs and PSG and others from France the ESL will be stillborn. The original plans for the ESL amounted to no more than life support for debt ridden legacy clubs and the task of convincing fans and other clubs that this time it is different will be difficult. Then there are questions of finance. These are complicated because television is to be free to air. Attendances at a match between the eighth team in Italy and the ninth in Italy is unlikely to attract a large crowd - or much sponsorship. Football thrives on very local and regional rivalries. The problems seem to be great. Especially as the planned league(s) have yet to convince the ECJ that they are any more consistent with competition law than UEFA's faux pas.

None of this should make the PL feel complacent. The PL may like to bask in the protective shield given by HM government, which intends to ban breakaways by law. But we are a country which lives under the rule of law and Boris Johnson has already discovered (as has Sunak) that the acts sponsored by the government are subject to judicial review. And competition law is identical in the UK to what it is in Europe. There is every likelihood that our courts will find a ban anti-competitive. Both UEFA and the PL have had a wake up call. They must heed it and begin to act like governing bodies acting within the law in the best interests of the game.

If members of the EPL are not allowed to join in, on pain of being expelled from their domestic league, this is dead in the water, pretty much. If it did nevertheless go ahead, and supposing that the CL continued, you could expect English clubs to win the latter competition one season in every two, if not more. And that would make the CL even more of a predictable bore fest than it currently is.

It be brought into law next year
Can't seen any law which could prevent a sporting organisation from deciding to play in a competition if they so wish. I don't believe for one second this Government, even if it survives long enough, could bring in such a law. A total restriction of trade. Sounds like the sort of thing that would happen in Russia or China.
Our politicians are fixated on the past. They think the Empire is still in full swing. You can't pretend that globalisation doesn't exist. Perhaps the next revolutionary move from this government will be to try to get Cayman-Islands based MUFC to pay some taxes in the UK. More chance of getting Amazon to pay up.
