Your recollection is skewed, possibly because the time you are referring to is your youth (we are all guilty of this btw).Think that goes for all football it did have an edge.
It was brilliant in the 80s etc.
Now it's watered-down boring full of tourists
Lots of games at Maine Road in the 80s the atmosphere was awful and many seasons in that decade the average attendance was around the 20,000 mark (Swales’ management of the figures notwithstanding).
The atmosphere this season has been flat but last season there were several games where it was amazing (Real, Arsenal, Liverpool and United for example) and as good as any atmosphere at Maine Road I went to apart from Charlton in ‘85 and united in ‘89. Everton in ‘81 would also be up there.
