Queues outside M1 turnstiles and over the top security

If you cast your mind back to the withdrawal of US forces from Kabul, and the 1000’s of desperate Afgans who were trying to escape and were being held back by the US army from getting into the airport, 2 suicide bombers struck outside the airport in the middle the Afghans who were being held back by the US army. 60 Afgans and 13 US troops were killed.
Other examples being the Paris Attack at the Stade se France in 2015 and of course the Arena bombing. All outside the Venue technically. Although i believe in Paris they did try to enter the stadium and were challenged by security if my memory is right and that prevented them getting inside

When they eventually get inside a stadium it will be huge news. No option but to try to prevent that…

Why do you think they ask you to open your jacket

I don’t know. Do you know?

When you’ve queued up from the back of the queue to the front of the queue, and you are about to get searched, and in the meantime you’ve been talking, laughing, and joking with your mates and with other City fans, why would a steward ask a specific person to open their coat or to take off their beanie hat? What is that person trying to hide? What does the steward think that person is trying to hide, or is going to do inside the ground to warrant a pat down, to have to open their coat, or to take their beanie hat off?

Big queues at M1 yesterday at 12 but I thought it was more down to dopey, slow as fuck stewards rather than any additional checks. My coat was zipped up and I wasn't asked to open it or turn out my pockets.

Different people all the time so some times (less frequently recently) it flows fairly smoothly and others like yesterday it's shite. M1 is always liable to be a problem due to the huge numbers having it as the only entrance option. Compare and contrast with M2.

That is the difference. A suicide bomber will blow themselves up regardless of where they chose to do that. Given the opportunity they would rather do that inside the stadium for maximum impact. But if they know they aren’t going to get passed security they will blow themselves up outside where there are a large amount of people close by. Sadly nothing will stop a suicide bomber unless they are shot dead before they get to their intended target.

Are they trying to hide the fact they are follically challenged?

Never had a problem with them.
Some matches take longer than others but I have never missed a start of the game due to them.
The queue did look longer yesterday just after 12 for some reason though.

Yes I do know

I don’t.

I’ve never brought anything into the ground I shouldn’t have. Certainly not to be asked to unzip my coat, to unzip my fleece, which the steward attempted to do personally(are you serious?!), or to take my beanie hat off.

The only thing I bring into the ground every now and again in my pocket is a chunky Sony metal pocket camera which has never been picked up by a scanner. I have never been asked to take the camera out of my coat pocket.

It depends how they approach it. I have a young girl with a wheelchair and the new jobsworth at the turnstile yesterday was rude and obviously felt she had some power over us just mere fans. I was told by another steward that they now have a new boss who has lots of new changes in the pipeline. I won't say what he thought about it.

There we have it in a nutshell. Give somebody power over others and it often goes to their heads. Also never overlook the fact that those in power over us in this capacity could be fans of other clubs and delight in making our lives harder gaining entry. I used to know two stewards at our games who were rags.
A few years ago I had a row with one jobsworth who was losing the argument. He then came out with "If you carry on I can deny you entry by saying I don't think you're in the right frame of mind to go into the game." Fucking wankers some of them.

You have been talking about in your last few posts the Same reason you take your jackets, hats and Coats off at airports

I think there‘s a difference between going through airport security and through stadium security.

You aren’t suggesting ‘every City fan’ should take their coats, hats, belts, etc off, and to put their possessions into a tray to be checked by stewards at the turnstiles?

You would get to see the game unless you arrived 3 hours early at the ground. Like most people do when they take a flight from an airport.

Not sure how you get away from the huge variance in standard of security checking with a big number of stewards hired on a casual basis to be honest.
You are always going to get some who don’t give a fuck and some who think they have made it as Kim jong uns supreme guard command!
A good example for me was Burnley game, I got waved through security checks without being checked but I then got grilled on the concourse for daring to have my toes on the dark blue box at the aisle while sipping my pint

Haha I like your comment about Kim Jong Un’s supreme guard command.

I think I must have had the same guy re daring to stand on the dark blue line whilst having the audacity to hold a pint in a restricted zone. What a knob jockey he was. I just looked at him in puzzlement. I did however have to move my left foot six inches before he set the Gestapo on me.

The dark blue box: one of life’s great footballing mysteries.

In what other line of entertainment would you have a nice dark rectangle where you’re not permitted to stand and watch whatever you’ve paid to see?

I’ve become fucking brilliant at drinking a pint, on my tiptoes, craning my neck then shuttling round to the edge of the next blue box to catch up with the action.

Went to Leipzig last year, bought a pint, stood on tiptoes holding pint at back of stand until i was told by a steward, “You can sit with your drink. In your own seat.”

Disbelief was soon followed by the dawning realisation that yes, indeed, you actually can have a pint in your seat in Germany. So I had eight more.

Not all terrorist attacks are bombs, there have been multiple cases ot stabbings, probably more likely than a bomb.Thing with attacks terrorist or lone wolf attacks is the timing and where they are going to happen is unpredictable. Just like people now accept going into an airport, or many tourist attractions they will have to leave time for security checks, they will have to learn it applies to large venues like football and concert venues too.
One day there will be an incident at a football and concert venue and questions will be asked why security checks weren’t thorough.
Fans need to plan getting in earlier, complaining about a pat down just seems silly.

Don’t be so stupid a quick cursory glance is all it takes which they sometimes do but believe me when Martyn’s Law comes it to be watch this space

I would always prefer a high level of security over ease of access for a large capacity sporting / entertainment event prime for a potentially terrorist attack.
The kid performing in the Chinese New Year dancing brought in a full blown machete.

We can’t even bring in a bottle of water!
