How many points will be needed to win the league?

I'm optimistic. I think the game with Arsenal will be very difficult, nothing like the game from last season, but we'll win by one goal. IF we win, we are in a good position. If we don't win, it will be very difficult to retain the title. Both Liverpool and Arsenal look hungrier and more energetic than us right now. Things might change next month.
Yep. There will be twists and turns. Have to admit that Liverpool looked very good today and Arsenal are flattering at the moment. I still think we have some gears to go through yet - need the big players to turn up now and they've shown in season's gone that they can.

last year 2nd placed team's tally (Arse) was 84 points
now the 2nd placed team will certainly have more than 84 but even 3rd placed team too.

might well be the 90p will be needed to be Champions.

when was the last time where top3 all finished above 85 points.I dont recall something like that.

our maximum is now 93 points if we 10 of 10 and even that is not enough if dippers win 10 of 10 lol.

at one point we are supposed to lose a very close title race, we came out well every time since 2012 from all close title races, lets hope its not season tho where it happens. :)

this 3-way race is sick tho, cannot see anyone dropping off and even a fucking draw now will bring brutal pressure to any of the 3 clubs...
anyone losing the City-Arsenal game will feel the real pressure after that and if its a draw Klopp will be laughing for a week especially when they beat Brighton few hours earlier a home.

only one PL game left in March which will make April and May brutal with all the remaining CL games too plus possible FA games...

I did a little bit of daft analysis on each teams remaining fixtures

If you list all the teams City / Liverpool and Arsenal have to play and measure them based on league position - City have marginally the easier run in (based on todays league table)

City - 87
Liverpool - 85
Arsenal - 83
(Higher number indicates playing lower in the league opposition)

When you break that out between home and away - you get a really interesting thing

City have much harder home games (39) than away games (48)

Liverpool and Arsenal have much easier home games and much harder away games - Liverpools is 56H 29A arsenals is 51H 32A

It’s a fair assumption that City, Liverpool and Arsenal will drop relatively few points at home - the title is likely to be won/lost on Liverpool/Arsenals away form

Of course this also doesn’t factor in the wildcard that CL fixtures will introduce - so that draw is likely to also be instrumental to ours and Arsenals chances

I haven’t followed this thread at all so apologies if already discussed.

But I was thinking earlier that I can not ever remember a genuine three horse race for the title. Not necessarily one that goes to the very last game. But one with all three in with a serious shout, right up until at least the last two or three games.

I go back to the mid/late 70s and can’t remember one.

Anyone recall one?

3rd May 2014, after 36 games.

Man City 80
Liverpool 80
Chelsea 78

Strangely people forget Chelsea were so close, but City won their next game, while Chelsea drew (as did Liverpool), so they were out of it before the final day.

You only remember the winners

We’ve not beaten a top 5 team this season and we’ve dropped 10points from winning positions and considering we’ve had a few points scammed off us by dubious officiating and the dippers and arse have had some fortuitous decisions go their way, to only be 1 point behind is hardly a disaster is it? It would normally be well within our grasp to take titles again, but the constant change of team selections and tactics is a greater worry for me, play our best team and we win it again.
Come on City.
You've also has some fortuitous decisions go your way too. Like today for example.

Let's keep referee decisions out of it, every team gets their breaks and every team gets their bad calls. Nobody is winning or losing the title based on a ref's call - not over 38 games. If a team wins the title its because they deserve to.

lots of twists and turns yet with 10 games to go, arsenal had the best of the weekend getting the 3 points but for some reason they dont worry me,then id say it went citys way at anfield, how the hell liverpool can be happy being knocked off the top and droping two points is beyond me, i think its just the PR machine kicking in

God, yeah. It is strange. I remember it being close for a long time but thought Chelsea were realistically if not mathematically well out of it before the end.

Arsenal have had to be flawless since New Year and I think to win the league, they are going to have to remain flawless. I still think the damage was done for them in the first half of the season.

If they go on and win every game from here - which I think they will have to - that would mean a 20 game winning run, which completely erodes our record of 17. If they do that then fair enough, but I cannot see it. Not with City, Spurs and United away. Add in CL mid-week games against the very best now if they qualify on Tuesday. Those games drain you as a player and fan-base.

Liverpool have such a favorable fixture list that I think we have to presume they will win every game and hope to capitalize if they don't.

The big one for us now is the Arsenal game. Win that and I think we end their run and it's between us and Liverpool.

Everton, United and Villa away are not easy games. Villa at home have done us and Arsenal and will be in a proper scrap for Europe.

But as cliché as it sounds there's quality up and down the league, and how we all cope with Europe will have some influence you'd think.
Villa got hit for 4 by Tottenham yesterday at their ground.

The BBC having us down as favourites which might quell the disappointment from some on here ;)

Does anyone actually take these seriously. ? Every year City are favourites for the CL, it doesn't mean anything.
Arsenal and Liverpool are playing a little better than us at the moment, and unless we go up a gear or two, there is no chance of retaining the title.

Judging off our title run in form over the last maybe 5 seasons I see us as favourites, most people wouldn't blink at us winning 10 on the trot the same can't be said of the scousers and tarquins.

I see them getting turned over at the swamp, and well the tarquins have a lot of banana skins, all it really means is that we are in it mate.
