Middle East Conflict

When you wish to avoid scrutiny and accountability, act in the shadows or extinguish the light.

The Israeli parliament has approved a law giving the government the power to ban broadcasts of TV channels including Al Jazeera, the Qatari-owned network.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would "act immediately" to close the network's local office.

The US expressed concern over the move.

With foreign journalists banned from entering Gaza, Al Jazeera staff based in the strip have been some of the only reporters able to cover the war on the ground.

The Knesset, Israel's parliament, approved the bill allowing foreign networks considered a threat to national security to be "temporarily" banned.

I still say the long-term existential threat to Israel is withdrawal of international support. There is a generation that's been taught about the Holocaust but (despite the IHRA example of antisemitism) does see parallels between the expansionist right wing of Israel and the Nazis, and does not see an Israel that wants peace. The danger is not new - the risk of "a new pharaoh that knew not Joseph" - but do secular Jews (or even religious but not fascist Jews) actually still believe that promises made to Moses should determine Israeli policy? Or is that just the American right-wing evangelicals who think all this is a prelude to the conversion of the Jews to Christ (and therefore all good)?

Horrific.

I have long wondered if the only thing that would stop Netanyahu and co would be if they killed many western citizens and aid workers and international pressure swelled to oust him and stop the bombing.

I am not sure if even that will stop them at this point.
The US is not going to stop Netanyahu, nor the UK, UN, or the EU. We give supportive words to the Palestinians but that's mainly for domestic consumption.

He knows this and feels he can expand the war outside of Israel. He's trying to force Iran to get involved. They don't want to as they know Israel would use nuclear arms on Tehran.
So Iran won't stop Israel.

The Israeli's themselves seem relatively happy to let him get on with it.

In other words the International community at large has decided that Gaza and Gazans are expendable.

So a British aid worker delivering food to the starving Palestinians was one of those Murdered by the Israeli's. Wonder if Sunak will hold the Israeli authorities culpable of his murder.

"Unintended strike" my arse.

The aid workers drove in a car with their markings on it and negotiated with the IDF the route. Yet some trigger happy **** still murdered them for having the audacity for caring.

Cunts.

I guess they wanted to make sure they were dead….

As we know the West, and that includes Israel, doesn't give a shit about Palestinian lives or Arabs.
But Australians, Canadians, Brits and Americans dying that's different.

I still don't think Biden will do anything useful like threaten Israel with sanctions.

And if that is the case, much as I loathe Trump, I hope it costs Biden the presidency.

Yes, that is what I was alluding to when I said that I doubted even that would stop them at this point.

I am a prominent critic of Biden’s disingenuous handling of Netanyahu and co’s genocidal rampage.

But Trump would almost certainly be even more accommodating and encouraging if it, and would completely ignore any public pressure to change course. And that’s ignoring that he could be the last president if he is reelected, functionally ending any hope of change in the way the US deals with Israel.

So, even now, I will not hope Biden loses the presidency to Trump. Because that would be even worse for literally everyone involved.
