England Squad - Euro 2024

There are so many ways to cover it. It doesn't need Bellingham and Foden to resolve it specifically. Both work hard on and off the ball for starters. Secondly, you make sure your shape in possession covers for it. Rice/Mainoo drifts to the left if you lose possession. You drop to a back three with Walker covering right, Stones central and X covering the left side. Shaw pushes up to close the space. Or Stones steps up and enables Rice/Mainoo to close the space instead.

We've often had Gvardiol on his own wide left, with no options but to pass back inside because Phil and Kev were both in the number 10 space. And we stuck with that because it was creating overloads elsewhere.
Your idea is fine, but it is beyond the thinking of Waistcoat. When he says “we don't pin people to the touchline” he is talking rubbish. In the WC he was screaming at Foden to stay wide. He will do again. This is a guy who thinks TAA is a top midfielder.

Listening to Southgate's press conference i have the feeling that Foden will be starting left. If this is Sothgate's thought process then he's sacrificing England''s best No 10 to accommodate Saka & Bellingham which is a poor move.

I'm sure you are right mate. Weirdly, and completely irrationally, I'm usually very nervous and concerned when it comes to City games but always hopeful and positive with England. Figure that one out.

I'll retain a hopeful approach that Gareth will get things to work. I also recognise, where others perhaps don't, that this England side is defensively weak. It's not City's backline he's working with, there's no Rodri. He has to keep a little bit more of a defensive shape because of that.

But he did talk about adapting, and I think he might unleash Phil by playing someone at LB who is purely defensive and doesn't push much further than the halfway line.

I have absolutely no love for waistcoat. I think he's way out of his depth, having him in charge of this squad is akin to getting a learner driver to race a red bull F1 car. he's already cost us 2 trophies imo and will likely cost us another this summer, however, that's not a bad preliminary squad to be fair. No obviously shit choices.

He's got to trim it by 7 though which is where we might see a few shit decisions made, trafford will drop out. There's 1, where he trims the rest from will be interesting though because there's 7 centre backs listed, you'd expect at least 2 maybe 3 to drop out from that, but then you've got 12 "forwards" which is far too many, but especially so when you've got a defensive minded manager who will probably only have 3 maybe 4 of them on the pitch most of the time which would suggest he's named probably 4 too many and then you look at the listed midfielders and despite not having enough in that area, you can immediately make a case to leave out 4 of them, TAA, Who is not a midfielder in any sense and will be a complete disaster if played there and jones, Wharton and Mainoo who all have almost zero international experience will be lucky to make the cut.

Just going by the numbers, you have to assume that there might be 1 "midfielder" cut at most. So that would be 1 keeper (trafford) 2 defenders (quansah, and dunk if Luke shaw is deemed "fit")
1 midfielder (should be jones but it'll almost certainly be wharton) then 3 forwards (Toney, Maddison, Eze)

He's listed them as forwards so it looks like a more attacking selection. He must think we're stupid as everyone knows he's a safety first manager

Has to keep Eze as he is actually a midfielder, otherwise I agree.
