Homophobia in football

It's of no importance of anyone to express their sexuality, take it to the next level, do you think "straight" players should say what floats their boat in the bedroom? No, it doesn't matter, if any players are gay it matters not a jot if they don't declare it, it's their business and theirs alone.

It's not about making a huge song and dance about your sexuality. It's about not having to hide it. It's about not having to worry about going on a date and requiring discretion.

Every time a straight footballer steps out with his partner they tell us what floats their boat.

It's pretty irrelevant in my opinion, why do people think they need to support a cause like this? We all know gays and lesbians are out there, they're a pretty tough community who support each other.

I have two friends who are lesbians, great girls who don't give two fucks about the rainbow shite, they come into our local, have a laugh with our mainly male mates. Honestly, those offended are proxy sympathisers, live in the real world, my friends are just normal people living normal lives and have never been on the receiving end of homophobia.
You should print a copy of this post and give it to them, then film their reaction and post it here.

I think everyone on all sides might learn something from such an exchange.

Well part of the reason they don't have to worry about all of that "rainbow shite" is thanks to, amongst others, the rainbow flag wavers of this world who have fought incredibly hard across the decades (and often at great personal cost) to secure their right to live their lives with minimal hassle. If your friends think enough of the battle has been won for them to live a carefree life then I'm really happy for them. But to dismiss the continuing efforts of those who want to make sure EVERYONE can live their lives without fear of harassment or discrimination as "rainbow shite" is ignorant in the extreme.

What's a good reason to not want to wear it then, in your view?
My view doesnt matter. Its the view of the individual concerned that matters. Some people have different views and those can be disagreed with, or even abhorred by some, but if someone doesnt want to display some visible representatuon for their own reasons that this is fine by me. For this reason I avoid the annual outrage about McLean not wearing a poppy on his shirt. Its his view on something, and that should be that

I think it’s perfectly fine to think and operate this way.

If we’re all just going to play “let it be”, then institutions which choose to display rainbow flags and hold tolerance days shouldn’t be the subject of derision either. “Keep politics out of football” — well, some institutions and the people that run/own them disagree, so let institutions act as they see fit at the leadership level and their employees can either embrace/accept these actions or not. Seems a fair compromise, no?

But it doesn’t feel like one, because the plurality of posts here suggest it’s the clubs at fault for calling attention to LGBTQ issues to begin with.

I like the approach of @Mazzarelli's Swiss Cheese best — let the club focus on broad displays of awareness without using the players as billboards. They are the face of the club but there are broad reach strategies that don’t rely on individual “faces”. However, I’d also expect no complaints about such an approach, and I suspect there’d still be stupid cries of “virtue signaling” anyhow.

If you are writing something about Jesus on a rainbow armband, it's pretty obvious to me that is homophobic. Yet again someone using their beliefs as an excuse to hide behind their homophobia. He's basically saying LGBT people need to stop and Jesus is a way to do that. Religion doesn't half fuck people's heads up.
No it isn't homophonic, and writing I love jesus basically doesn't mean what you have written. I think you ve misconstrued the meanings in your head.

I love jesus....means what it says.

I’m sure all your friends welcome the two lesbians into the pub. I bet most probably fantasize about being in the middle of both of them in bed.
Would John Inman and Larry Grayson receive the same welcome if they walked in?

Well, there's a gay guy called Paul who hosts the Monday quiz in another pub, I've known him for donkeys years and consider him a mate, he gave me a big hug when my Dad died, no shame in that, he's a good mate of loads of straight people, no issue at all.

Oh do fuck off you snowflake, do you really think I would have them as my friends if I was homophobic.
This post reads a lot like “ I am not racist as I have black friends”.
You're obviously entitled to an opinion but for me I just don't get it, minorities are well protected in this country, just like racism homophobia will always exist amongst those with extreme views, those people will never change their opinion, I do still think it's "Rainbow shite".
Yes they are so well protected in the country that you hear racial abuses to this day and gay footballers are afraid of coming out or even going to events with their partners in fear of the vitriol. Very easy for you to say when you are not the minority.

Bastardized his name there didn't you haha, his documentary on BT Sport was very good. He said the reason he never came out wasn't because of the fans but the dressing room itself where there seemed to be a real hatred of gays.
He summed it up well in his article. You’d have to have skin thicker than a rhino to dare come out as a top class footballer.

I always used to call him Schnitzelburger back in the day. Apologies to any schnitzels that may be offended by that.

Aye, about as convincing as the person who is really concerned about 'all lives' but only ever seems to bring it up during a Black Lives Matter campaign. Or the person who is a big advocate of combatting mental health in men, but only on International Women's Day.

He's worn a captain's armband since December last year, and yet the only time he's felt the need to declare his love for Jesus was coincidentally the one week where they've decided to put a rainbow flag on it. If he did it once, you could even give him the benefit of the doubt for a clumsy attempt to show that he's a Christian and has no issues with being gay. Unfortunately, his dad has come out and torpedoed any idea of that with this quote.

He was saying' You gave me the armband, as a Christian I don't believe in your cause, but I will put it on'

And then he's doubled down after being warned about it, so he's obviously writing it to undermine the message of the armband. He might as well have written 'no homo' on it so that no-one would think he's gay for wearing it.

Anyway, he could do far worse than to look at his predecessor as Crystal Palace captain, Joel Ward, a devout Christian.

Why do they choose not to wear it? Please explain using more words than ‘it’s their choice’ or ‘it’s a religious thing’
The religion or sex preferences of individuals is nothing to do with anyone, only those involved in any relationships and then it's purely a private matter.
I don't wish to know or get involved to the point that it causes more bother than it's worth and I really am not interested.... Nor should anyone else be.
