Syria | Assad flees to Moscow as rebels capture Damascus

If anything Syria will go one of two ways, it'll become Taliban-esque militaristic Islamic led as per Afghanistan or it'll indeed become a more moderate Islamic country. Both would be preferable for Israel compared to before.

We'll probably now see either Syria get carved up or there will be continued war with the western backed Kurdish forces in the east... Where there are also many oil fields.
There is going to be some dust to settle, but between Turkey and the Gulf States there is enough money and will to get the country functioning again, I envisage a kind of federal set up with regions like the Kurdish areas gaining greater autonomy and the Alawite heartlands, there will be little Iranian influence they shot themselves in the foot in enabling Assad, no idea what will happen to the two Russian bases, but I can't imagine any new Syrian Government wanting them there after what they did in the war

One of the beefs the Turks have with the Israelis is the Israeli backing of several Kurdish groups, I can imagine that might be stopping soon, because I doubt they would want to go to war with the Turks, especially now they will be right at their border

All in all I think it's a positive development, hopefully Syria starts to function as a modern state the Turks acting as sword of Damocles over the Israelis heads thus keeping them in check, Iranian and Russian influence curtailed

Syria = Jihadists good

Afghanistan = Jihadists bad

I'm confused????

Assad was a ****. Is he being replaced by bigger cunts that are going to destabilise the country like Iraq whilst the yanks 'protect' the oil.

Meanwhile the Israeli fascist has taken over Syrian land protected by the UN and that's not a story.

This world is fucked up.

What's right or wrong anymore?

No wonder people go mad trying to comprehend everything that's going on the world.
There is not a great deal of Oil in Syria, but it's location is it's strength, who knows what replaces him but from what I can see it's mainly Turkish and Qutarie backed groups that are in the ascendancy, the Turkish back groups are Jihadists and are mainly secular

Those well known secular Jihadists...

Yes, Erdogan is no angel, but I’ve never got a sense he (or Turkey more widely) is philosophically opposed to the existence of Israel (happy yo be corrected if I’m wrong).

I know Turkish-Israeli relations have worsened since October 7th but I don’t see that schism as permanent or irreparable. I think Isreal would certainly welcome a more dominant Turkey if it meant Iran’s influence waning. I think most of the middle east would.
I heard an interview with a former Jordanian minister a few months ago. He said most people in the area hate Israel, but they hate Iran even more.

Iran has the potential to be a truly great country. Huge amount of natural resources, beautiful landscapes, incredible history, well located and a relatively young population.

Shame it’s run by cunts.

I’ve dealt with loads of Turks over the years and they are (almost exclusively) great to do business with. They are good at listening to and following advice. Prompt payers too. Love working with them.

They are far more western looking than most Kurds and Lebanese I’ve dealt with. tbf, most of the Iranians I’ve dealt with are more western looking than either of those folk!

And they are in NATO. Not perfect, sure, but a damn sight better than Iran.

So I’m genuinely struggling to see how Turkey gaining more influence in the Middle East is a bad thing. Might bring some much needed stability and relative moderation.

And most likely enables us to keep out of it.
Yeah, but Erdoğan is a bit of a shit.

2 Russian military bases. That's the thorny issue. Vlad won't want to fight form them so I guess he will quietly withdraw.
Has anyone seen pictures of Assad in Russia?
He's probably staying away from the windows.

conspiracy time and Im probably just putting 2+2 together and getting 5. there was that plane that had an odd flight path the other day that some suggested may have been Assad's plane. there were rumours ( all very unconfirmed ) that the Russians had addicentally shot it down as it was heading towards there navel base.

Are Russia just saying he's there to get around the fact they killed him by mistake.

A couple of things that don't really make sense with this, all these prisons being opened and everyone being freed, is there nobody in the prison for doing bad things? All just imprisoned by the bad guy because he didn't like them?
And why did asaads lot just give up all of a sudden? Doesn't sound like there was much of a battle for Damascus, sounds like the rebels just drove in and asaads lot just legged it, why didn't the rebels try that before? All seems a little strange

The plot twist is it was 2 North Korean lads who shot it down on their first day.

When you live in a dictatorship like Syria crime tends to go unreported and unpunished the state uses it's resources to hammer the people into submission

It was the perfect moment for the rebels to strike, the Iranians have proved to be a paper tiger the Russians have not got the resources and the Army had not been paid apparently, there will have been a hell of a lot of inter clan talks going on and backroom deals

I believe there was a meeting between Russia, Iran, and other former supporters of Assad, somewhere in the Middle East over the weekend. They all withdrew their support for Assad. Following that, the regime had nowhere to go so allowed the militia to walk through as the former force walked away.

It would have been hilarious if Russia denied him entry. It was all probably pre arranged like a match between Giant Hsystacks and Big Daddy!!

Hopefully, the new regime will be better than the old but I dm not too optimistic. Would love to be wrong.

Could have killed him deliberately. He’s no benefit to them living in Moscow. His wealth is probably in western banks and inaccessible so he would just be a liability for Russia. Easier to kill him and pretend he’s got asylum never to be seen again. We all know Putin’s a **** and is hardly likely to look after a “friend” who is no longer useful. Loyalty is an alien concept to him.

Yes, this seems entirely plausible. Possibly even likely. I guess time will probably tell.
