Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Football is cyclic and teams come and go. Wenger was once golden bollox he in his time changed football and many teams changed too and eventually caught and surpassed Wenger. Wenger refused to change he would not compromise and eventually he became a dinosaur. That will be the fate of Guardiola, football especially the PL is not static, teams adopt tactics year in year out and sometimes from game to game. Simply buying new players to play the same style of tippy tappy shit I can’t see working, so he changes or he goes, doing the same thing is simply not acceptable
Can’t really argue with this.

Villa are a decent side who have given us some good matches in recent years. No shame in a defeat, but the shame is in the manner of the defeat and the context of this terrible run.

Ortega put in a good shift and stopped it from being an absolute twatting.
Grealish showed some fight and had a decent first half but hardly saw the ball in the second.
Foden scored a nice goal.

Nothing to praise in anyone else (although Haaland has my sympathies for having zero service).

We're slow, casual and brittle. And far too easily overrun in midfield.
I felt sorry for a kanji as he’s just back from injury and he’s trying to do his job as well as walkers. No way rico should be near our back line either

There’s lots to moan about but the glaringly obvious issue is the CM is a universe away from where it needs to be.

Gundogan is like playing with 10 men he’s that far off it. We are absolutely desperate for 2 proper CMs. Players with fitness, pace, desire. That 2nd goal is the result of an unacceptable lack of physicality. Rogers just rags about 4 players out the way and off he goes. Embarrassing for a central midfield.

For me, we fix that in January and we’ll be a lot harder to score against. The start point.

This is what I don't understand ? Rodri is missing and not one player in the squad can play there ?
So what should any good manager do is change the system, pack the defence and midfield and become hard to beat and play against, So what if we stink the place out and look ugly, make us hard to beat at least

Boring, insipid, shit football we're churning out now and there looks to be no end in sight. You just don't see where the goals are coming from, Foden's today was lucky as it bounced up off a defender. We're a real fucking mess and Pep seems absolutely clueless how to turn it around. I think he'll walk soon if these players fail to show any more effort as it was woefully lacking today. Are they really playing for Pep anymore?

Don't think the players are buying into Pep's ethos anymore.
Sad and to some exetent ungrateful, but they're human and eventually this happens on all organisations.
The dramatic decline here is astonishing though.

Haaland pussy-footed about all game and made fuck all challenges on the ball.

Haaland is a superb goal scorer when the side is purring but he’s a very limited footballer. He’s also lazy and soft as shit for a big lad.

Imagine Tevez in that game today. He’d have been everywhere and run his bollocks off making a proper nuisance of himself. Haaland is far too easy to play against.

Lol you just realised.
Yes "All periods of dominance come up to the end of their cycle and this is it."
But to go from being the best team in the world to this, in such a short period, would ordinarily be gross negligence and incompetence, so much so, that it could almost be deliberate.

Why is every other team's technical area busy with people offering opinions, suggestions and geeing players up. Ours?? A one man total exclusion zone.
We have a look of resignation.
I realised a while ago mate but just needed to write it down. I do agree with you that the rapid decline in the last 2 months has been shocking.
What this does for the strategy is concerning. Tourists are attracted to whatever team is doing well and winning. There could be a lot of empties in the NS expansion unless there is new investment in the squad. Top 4 is therefore a must this season. No one’s coming to play Europa or Conference League next season.

I’m no tactician but the high line seems to leave us wide open.

Players look mentally exhausted after relentless fixtures for club and country. Too many games and too much travel.

At this level you only need to 5% off it and you’ll get beaten.

No one can get rested. No one has to play for a place.

Add to that ageing etc. injuries etc.

It’s a mess. We have the resources to fix.

Too many good young players have been sold on. The team is leggy at best, too many senior players on a downward spiral.

I find it hard to believe we haven’t got any reserve/ youth players that could do a better job in central midfield than what we have in there

I hope Pep wants to stay and rebuild
