It's Quiet 18 - Wanna ring the bell?

I agree and disagree. It would be great to have Cole Palmer playing for us right now, but we have the benefit of hindsight.

At the time, no one questioned City for accepting a £40m+ transfer for a player who'd made 19 appearances (and, most importantly, who wanted to leave). The transfer worked out fine for all three parties.

There are tons of 'what if' players we let go. It's the nature of our new model (build the best academy in the world and sell young players to fund first-team transfers). We can't make room for all of them; some will inevitably become exceptional players for other clubs.

I would say that Cole Palmer WAS NOT a MAJOR mistake by us. The reinvestment of the money we received for Cole was the major mistake.
Agree and disagree! Nobody thought 45m was a bad deal at the time. But can transfer ever be judged when they happen? Surely they can only be judged after a period of time? And as such Palmer being sold was a disaster and looks like the biggest error of judgment of judgement for a decade. Pep and txiki chose Doku over Palmer - someone got it badly badly wrong.

Didnt trust pep would play him as much as he wanted so he left. Next.

Yep, I guess my thinking is that, Palmer leaving is an ok decision (based on the facts at the time), but replacing him with Doku clearly has not worked out.

Hopefully Doku can prove us all wrong. In Pep we trust!

I can go along with that. But the major issue though is that when we go out in the market now to scope out someone that can replace the output of the likes of KdB, Palmer is probably the absolute pinnacle right now. And we had him on the bench 18 months ago.

I can agree that the problem is more than just selling Palmer. Thinning out the squad and not replacing adequately, letting the squad get old together, and still not implementing youth at all to actually scope out whether we have someone capable to help the senior team, even now when our results and performances is in crisis.

But this all adds up. This is all decisions that have been taken and they are all mistakes. We didn't go into the market in the summer even though we knew we didn't replace Mahrez and we knew we sold someone that turned out to be great directly strenghtening another team. Instead we sold another attacking option, refusing to replace him as well. We are still not putting pressure on the manager to actually improve his youth policy, when Palmer absolutely shows that he may have world-class talent waiting on the bench.

All of this has led to us going from a world-class squad in its prime, to a thin old squad in decline in desperate need for talent that might not exist. And Palmer in my opinion is the crown jewel of those mistakes, because he is the epitome of how we have neglected to see beyond the current performers, many of which should have been phased out already

Re our recent player purchases it wouldn't have been so bad if we'd signed the likes of Phillip's and Nunes for 15-20m each, but wasting near to 100m quid is staggering. Add to that 50m on Doku, jury still out and 90m on Gvardiol jury still out makes that 240m spent on seemingly bang average players. New incomings have to be spot on!

I think that's how the majority of us sees it. I wonder if our management sees it the same way, though. I really hope they do...

However you look at it…. Our Execs have dropped the ball! And they’ll want to rectify things ASAP. No where in their objectives will a 10th place finish have been viewed as an acceptable outcome this season. They’ll want to prop things up as much as possible- the present situation will be viewed as unacceptable.

Gvardiol for 90m was worth it. Even in our poor form he’s coming up with important goals. He’s probably carrying an injury but soldiering on and that’s probably why he hasn’t been as good as he was last season.

Lads I reckon we have to go in and pillage Newcastle. Take whatever we can get out of there.

Bruno, Gordon and Isak would all help. Any of them.

McFarlane and Echerverri only players to be joining in January IMO, We dont over play for players EVER, January notorious difficult market which will require serious overpayment. IMO We will write this season off and start again in summer. CWC prize money makes up for the missed CL money. All this rumours of us going big in January is bollocks to appease the fans

How does it appease the fans when we do nothing then? Even in the summer other clubs know we are desperate? Especially if the likes of Walker, KDB, Ederson etc all go and we have to do top end business?

Tbh the management should be intent in signing players who can help bring the team out of the current hiatus, which if done successfully will appease the supporters as well.

Agreed mate. I fully understand not buying for buying sake but there LOADS of players out there who are attainable and would be hungry to come to City and play for Pep.

and will do no good at all if he persists in the walking football tactic

I don’t get the desperation line. The team badly needs reinforcements. It’s not realistic to expect the club to buy replacements for the likes of Kev while still at the club. Unless we timed his downfall perfectly and already had a player in a season before. It’s just not gonna happen. How would we keep the wage bill down?

The club has record turnover for a reason and that’s due to pitch success. Now it’s time to reinvest back into the team to continue winning.

Teams in Spain/italy will take the money.

We need to stop finding problems. Go and buy who we want. If the recruitment is not correct we will continue to struggle season after season like most clubs.

Penny pinching on elite players is part of the reason we are in this mess.

Good post that mate, there are players out there in the same vein as when we signed the likes of Sane, Gabby etc? Then give Pep the time to make them into City 3.0 under the greatest manager on the planet and of all time.
