VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

Think you may just have missed the irony in my post!
Blue hammer thinks the players dived today knowing there was no VAR.
And that, ergo, players won’t dive knowing there is VAR.
which you and I know is absolute bollocks - bit like VAR really!
I must have, I get a bit wound up about VAR sometimes, it’s completely ruined the enjoyment of celebrating a goal, even for the player.

To be fair, what he actually said was you no longer see any penalties given when there is no contact whatsoever. And he’s right about that.

The trouble is, it’s been replaced by players perfecting the art of initiating contact and then diving, so not sure there’s been a net improvement.

Course they do. They dive and cheat all over the pitch.
VAR can only get involved in penalty decisions, DGSO or serious foul play decisions if, and only if they think the on-field referee has made a 'clear & obvious' mistake or missed it altogether. As simulation isn't any of the above VAR have no jurisdiction, leaving players free to dive as much as they can get away with. They all know how to con the referee, and some players & teams are better than others. VAR makes ZERO difference in this regard.

If the football authorities are brave enough to ditch VAR, slow motion TV replays and drawn lines by TV companies would also have to be banned, otherwise a few high profile mistakes involving any of the red scum teams would see it back in a shot. Are the broadcasters likely to agree to only showing replays of incidents in real time i.e. the actual player, supporter and officials experience at the game? I think not - so we are stuck with it.

You do realize that slow motion TV replays and drawn offside lines by TV companies were shown before VAR. Offside lines weren't a problem without VAR as part of TV broadcasts because the audience understood that it was a judgement call. In the FIFA video games before VAR was introduced, for example, they would show the offside line in a replay every time an offside was called. Now if they missed an offsides, then maybe they wouldn't show it, and that would have less to do with "hiding" a bad decision than it would be due to not having a stoppage in play to have the time to queue up a replay showing the offside line. Sometimes there just isn't an opportunity to show missed offside calls when the match is moving along in continuous fashion.

The offside line showing replays of offside decisions as part of TV broadcasts before VAR was a very innocent and useful enhancement to show the audience why offside was called. It's of course become a whole different monster since VAR has been introduced. And we've become so used to VAR that it would be hard to put that genie back in the bottle. But it's not a good enough excuse to claim they would have to agree not to show replays of controversial fouls or of offside lines. No one would have to agree to that, that wasn't the way it was before VAR, and although VAR has created a certain sensitivity over replays and offside lines, that's not something that couldn't be overcome with time.

Not sure if ‘brave’ comes into it? The Premier League voted to scrap it last year and 19/20 wanted to keep it. Not even sure the team who proposed it, Wolves, really wanted it scraped, or just use it as an excuse to have a whinge about how hard done by they’ve been, knowing it had no chance of being passed.

Also, just about every league that don’t have it, Championship, Women’s Premier, for example, don’t seem to be grateful they don’t have to put up with it. But spend most of their time complaining they’ve been left behind.

I think it's safe to say that Wolves "really" wanted it scrapped. Wolves just so happen to be undone by VAR more than anyone, maybe it had something to do with it. But on the contrary, you would expect such a movement by the team most negatively affected by it. You wouldn't expect City to have called for the VAR to be scraped if they have more often than not benefitted from VAR. There's been some VAR blunders against City but not as consistently against those lower down the table. Which also creates a dynamic that I really don't want to be a part of in either direction, either having VAR be the thorn in your side or to have that thorn be the thing that your club benefits from.

VAR is insidious don't you see, it took Wolves being aggrieved maybe to see how much of a sham it is, and I must say Wolves proposal, the statement, was very good and it was extraordinary for the 19 other clubs to read then then vote to keep VAR. That would suggest that they (the heads of the 19 other clubs, who voted) liked the stuff that Wolves was spoking out again in their proposal statement.

The dynamic between the bigger clubs at the top of the table seeming to get preferential treatment when it comes to VAR and the lower clubs being aggrieved feeling like the system is designed to impact them and keep them down is a very powerful force, and it compelled Wolves to put it to a vote. But Wolves really wanted it scraped, and I would bet that they would also "settle" for a challenge system in place of VAR, anything to get rid of VAR I bet Wolves would be in favor of.

West Ham were actually bottom of the VAR decisions a couple of seasons ago.
Fact is 19 out of the 20 PL clubs voted to keep it. It’s not going anywhere.
Let’s just adapt ways to improve and implement decisions better in a quicker time season by season without the constant outcry and moaning would be my vote.

There’s no point arguing about something we can never know the answer to. But suffice to say whether Wolves genuinely wanted it scrapped or not, they knew the complete lack of support meant it was never going to happen. So the end result was never going to be anything more than them having a bit of a whinge.

The perception, real or not, that the big clubs get favourable decisions over the smaller ones is as old as anyone can remember. It was the case well before VAR. It’s the case now. And in the unlikely event that VAR is ever scrapped, it will continue to be the case.

Clear dive from Havertz against Man Utd, never ever a penalty.
I’m glad there’s no VAR as it highlights why it’s needed.

Players all diving and cheating as they know there isn’t VAR.

Great game to watch without var. If it was being used there would still be 20 minutes left....

Diaz with a pathetic dive for Liverpool, pundit on Soccer Saturday shouted 'that's definitely a penalty!!'' then he saw a replay and said 'nope, never a penalty' , Ref didn't give it. Probably would have done prior VAR.

Just watching the end of the Brentford v Liverpool match, with 10 mins to go 0-0 Brentford have an attack off side is given by the Linesman ( it dint look like to me) anyway should the game carried on until the attacking phase has finished? Brentford are in a very good position! But it’s Liverpool so blow up (cheating bastards)

Liverpool score two very late goals to win, what will be dais f… all it’s the greatest Club/ Team in the world Bent B…….s

Should have been a dipper red as well.

Should have been a dipper red as well.
Last few Dipper games, Newcastle attacking with a 3 on 1 and ref blows for full time, same game VVD avoids a red and penalty for a clear assault on Gordon, Nunez avoids a red v Rags, today again avoids a red which was as clear as you'll see but look at who was ref today for them, Madely, who remember his performance for them at Palace last season (I think), Palace 1 up and he sends off a Palace player for the softest ever yellow and in the same game, both teams had 17 fouls and he booked 8 Palace player inc a 2nd yellow and only gave the Dippers stat paddling yellows in 92nd and 97th minute.

All you need to know about how utterly shit it is: i fucking hate it and hate what it’s done
Following a VAR consultation, Merino’s effort is disallowed because it hit Havertz’s hand on its way past Raya. Rice provided the cross, the ball was headed towards Merino and unfortunately for him, the hand of Havertz intervened to rob him of his big moment.
