From what I've read, the Government money/hand out isn't for the stadium, its for infrastructure and the surrounding area around the stadium.

The Government and United know there would be a massive outcry if the Government gave United tax payers money to build the new stadium.

It's like City asking the Government for money towards the Etihad Campus, the Collar site, and another Metrolink

The new stadium needs more room than they currently have unless they move out and play somewhere else for 2 or 3 years. The only way to build alongside is to grab some of the train goods container yard next door. That yard really needs moving completely because the freight trains have to run through Piccadilly and Victoria to reach it, which means there are fewer passenger trains because of it. If the whole yard can be moved, to I think it’s St Helens area the yard owners want, then the whole of GM gets more passenger trains because a large number of freight trains are removed from the lines. It really is quite sensible all round.
Just move the yard and let the scu m pay for the rest.

I’ve never heard anyone say there’s not enough trains? Are we sure that’s the problem that needs solving?

Are you being serious? Your suggesting handing over freight trains to Merseyside which will cost thousands of job in the Greater Manchester area? Also train lines aren't just for passengers they're for goods and capacity on the trains is stretched and what you're suggesting would stretch it even further. Absolute ridiculous suggestion

There's a bottleneck between Deansgate through Oxford Rd and Platforms 13/14 at Piccadilly. The freight trains also use that route so I'd say the idea is that taking those movements elsewhere would enable smoother running along that route. I think it's more about reducing delays to existing services than extra trains.

I knew it,after all these years of knowing you, you've finally admitted to being a trainspotter.
Anorak !!!

That is being sorted out. The Oxford Road station rebuild will take 2 years whilst the station is closed. Funding is in place.

He’s right.

The site is currently used as a huge rail freight terminal. But the operator, Freightliner, has indicated it would be willing to relocate it from Trafford Park to Parkside East in St Helens.

Ha ha - no, but I often use platforms 13/14 at Piccadilly and there are always loads of delays and I've seen how long the freight trains are. Anyway, there's probably a thread in off topic for that discussion.

I get that & I’m a massive supporter of rail & investment in passenger transport but what I’m seeing is a justification for rail improvements as an excuse to support this. Would the rail improvements get the investment, not a fucking chance but it will because some Yanks bought a club, saddled it with debt, refused to maintain it. Took further investment from a tax cheating billionaire, pocketed that & now believe it’s up to tax payers who hate the cunts to bail them out.

Now if the government turned round & said sell your land around the area & use the balance to bring your existing stadium up to scratch.

Your response was to a picture of Infantino at a trump rally. That’s what it looked like you were referencing.
I assumed it was the Presidential Inauguration not a Trump rally?

Not that I have any time time for Trump or his neo-fascist agenda.
