current set up and tactics are found out. better incoming players can improve it but we need to evolve a bit. we used to have brutal energy and off the ball workrate especially with Jesus, Sterling, Fernandinho, 20-21, 21-22...
teams hated to play us as we working just as hard off the ball as them but great at possession too and we did press well and hard earning us chances and stealing the ball back in attacking third.
This. Its the midfield we need to completely renew other than Rodri.

Need to mention how poor our set pieces were again tonight, the second half in particular.

There was one corner in the second half when De Bruyne just lofted it gently into the goalie’s hands and we didn’t have one player within 15 yards of him.

Given the poor standard of the performances as a whole, and our apparent inability to turn it around, one might have hoped that more attention would have been directed at the set pieces. Try to improve at least one aspect of our game. But sadly that hasn’t materialised.

Who in their right mind is throwing Khusanov or Reis out there against Vini and Mbappe when neither of them have even played a full 90 for City? Marmoush should’ve come on earlier but the other two would be like deer in headlights with Madrid running at them the way we lost control of the game.

When the club is in crisis and give you 200 million to sort out the team, you should spend it on players that are ready to help now.

since Haaland we didnt sign anyone that walks into the line up, but the likes of Walker, KDB, Gundo, Grealish all kind of should not be a starter based on their current state and Rodri is off so thats 5 players out and no one in of that category. apart from Gvardiol but he kind of replaced Ake in LB from 22-23. recruitment really set us back since the treble win.

Agree with many that the substitutions were poor - both in terms of timing and choices. However, even with the fact that we ended up with Kova, Bernardo and Gundo in the midfield, we could have had some semblance of control if they had sat deeper. Instead we saw Kova making runs at the defence, Gundogan doing underlapping wing runs and Bernardo trying to take it past Mendy. All with a high line and Rico inverting. As much as the choices were detrimental, the instructions were just a bit self-defeating.

It’s becoming clearer to me every game that when he has players and everything else in place there is no one better - apart from the occasional overthink in some of the bigger games.

But I’m afraid during this run he’s looked absolutely clueless to me, he’s failed to address the issues which are happening game after game. The way in which we are losing games is ridiculous and yet nothing changes.

Hes never experienced anything like this in his career and I'm genuinely not sure he is capable of getting us out of this mess because of that. To me he looks lost, it’s ok blaming individual mistakes but they’re no longer just one off anomaly’s.

The mental fragility of the side is astounding given the success we’ve had and as far as I’m concerned it’s up to pep to address that to motivate and instil belief back into the squad to stop us capitulating like we have countless times this season.

Ultimately the results are down to him, his win percentage in the last 24 games is 33%. Form you’d expect of a bottom half or relegation threatened side.

Too many people on here like to laud him as the best in the world or even best ever and yet have zero expectation and call others entitled when they question him over recent results.

now that is really strange. rarely we see any side taking a corner and not have one player dedicated in the box disturbing the keeper specifically. trying to block his view, even his movement.

Arsenal fucking scores goals of these tricks every 3rd game.

City set piece coach specifically asking players not to disturb or go even close to the GK. let him have maximum time and space to make a save, jump, vision of the ball etc.
would be first person sacked by Khaldoon personally the set piece coach lol.

For all of the wonderful things he’s done at City he doesn’t half leave me scratching my head at times.

I really wish he’d change our style at certain points in games instead of leaving us exposed and one dimensional.

There are clearly some that are not in his circle of trust and so he goes with the ones that are, but it’s hurt us badly at times this
I dont know how to word it correctly, but the best coach in the world should have more than one way of playing. Surely the best coaches change their style based on circumstances? We have a team that looks effective being direct and we just bought one of the fastest and in form strikers in europe who played in a team that hits on the break.

But pep insists on playing high but with no press cos the plays Players that cant press or he tells them not to press.

He is a genius but he’s flawed at this moment. Who am I to question the best coach we’ve ever had, one of the best coaches ever in any sport? But the results and performances this season raise this question.

Look at how Madrid play under Ancelotti. They can play a league game at the weekend where they dominate other teams, then they'll play CL midweek and hardly touch the ball but go on to score a few goals.

As peculiar as it sounds, I’m feeling encouraged by the way we set up and went about the first half. We were much more compact, the fullbacks were giving us extra bodies in midfield, there weren’t giant spaces everywhere, we were measured in possession, were looking after it higher up the pitch. And aside from a mad 5 minutes when they had 3 chances, we were in control. We looked like a Pep team. Miles better than the nonsense stuff we saw against PSG. Hopefully a sign that Pep will go back to his principles as we move forward.
Take that team playing that way, replace Akanji with a fullback who can properly step into midfield (Cambiasso, Kimmich), put Rodri and maybe Gonzalez in the midfield, Foden behind Haaland and get a top class creative replacement for De Bruyne (Wirtz, Baena) and we’ll be good to go.
I'm not sure this is necessarily true. We looked disjointed to start the game and could have easily been down 3 in the first 10 minutes.

We then smashed and grabbed a lead off of Jack's individual brilliance. Sure we slowed the game down after that and kept sluggish possession. But it was a lot easier against the worst pressing team in the champions League.

We didn't create chances, put them under severe pressure or break them down.

We were lucky to start, smash and grabbed a lead, then eventually tired out and lost the game. Nothing particularly interesting, comforting or new about this performance. Same old story.

The only difference is we were playing against a team probably just as weak as us if not weaker. But we sucked just enough to lose it in the end.

Go to Bernebau play open and go for it.

Edddy
Khusa, Stones Dias and Gvardiol
Gonzo and Bernado at DM
Phil Omar and Savio
Haaland.

Go all out fire. None of that negative football stuff. Attack! Attack! Attack! Only victory matters!

Enough with all those weak formation nonsense.... Its boring and regressive. We can get Sam Allardyce to do this 6 defenders bullshit.

Stip papering over tour weakness... Accentuate your strengths instead.

Anyone who thinks Pep is getting us out of this is being wildly optimistic. The Pep era as we knew it is over.

Except they had plenty of the ball tonight too, possession was 50-50, they had double our shots and shots on target as well.

Starting to question him now.

The Kovacic sub for Ake to drop Stones to CB was a game changer and I was gutted to see it at the time.

Don’t know if he can fix it. He looks lost and baffled.

The best manager we've ever had by a country mile.

But he fucking frustrates me.

Why when he makes a substitution can he not just swap like for like if it's been working, but he doesn't, he'll take off a right back, bring on a left winger, switch a centre back to right back, put a midfielder to centre half, switch the wingers from traditional to inverted etc etc, it fucks everything up, no one knows where they should be playing from one minute to the next, it kills the flow, confuses me to fuck so God knows what the players must be thinking.

I think he could still go,I honestly think pep is done he needs a break from football, sad to see but his aura is disappearing..

He might do but my feeling is he will see through this comp in the states, but it’s not much longer to worry about as we will be out after group games anyway hahaha
