Any scam calls

One doing the rounds at the moment...

Withheld number, British accent reporting that they are from your bank & have all of your personal information.

Ask you about a transaction that they have temporarily blocked (it's a dummy transaction you obviously haven't done), when you deny any knowledge, they say that they will block your card and send a new one to you.

They then talk you through the "get cash" feature on your mobile banking and instruct you to follow instructions to "activate a code" incase you need it. The trick is they ask you for the code that you should present to the cash machine in order to put it on the system to activate, only you don't need to do this so they use the code immediately and withdraw the cash themselves.

Very believable to anyone who might not be clued up on it.
I've had something similar to this tonight, a call from a withheld number claiming they were from my credit card company fraud department and had noticed suspicious activity on my account involving an ebay purchase from someone in Blackburn. They said they had sent me a text with an authorisation code and asked.me to repeat the code back to them. I told.him I couldn't as I was driving and not able to access my messages. The cheeky fuck said it didn't sound like I was driving. At that point I tore him a new one and accused him of being a scamming fucker. He promptly hung up. When I got home I rang.my credit card company and they confirmed there had been an attempted fraud against it but it had been blocked, but there were no records of anyone from the credit card company calling me. They have since blocked my account and will create a new money and send.me a new card.

Nope ..... if I smell a rat in any phone call, or in any email, i send them packing before they get chance to start their spiel, i just cut them straight off in their prime!

And I don't click on any suspicious lookin' email links either, i just delete them.

I don't feel bad about it, i don't know the fkers, so they mean nothing to me.

Good lad, that's the right course of action to take ...... don't take any notice of the fkers, slam the phone down, and ring your company or bank !

I am always extremely rude to cold callers, it’s resulted in me offending the occasional legitimate caller but as I am a rude fucker anyway that’s fine

Noticed an increase in these so far in 2025. Heating and insulation company from the north east being a regular offender this past fortnight, some woman who sounds like she still smokes 200 a day asking if I'm the homeowner and if I'd like to have a free no obligation house visit to determine suitability if I just give them my card details.

Wouldn't mind but with family members currently suffering dementia and other illnesses, not picking up the phone even to a withheld number is something we try not to do.

Best thing you can do, if they are UK based, is ask where they for your number from, say you haven't consented to being on any mailing list to your knowledge, ask for their company details and then request confirmation that your details have been deleted from their system, otherwise you suspect then of obtaining your details without consent. If they don't hang up before you finish them they'll be obliged to take action. Works on emails too, I've had apologetic emails from consumer relations managers at a few companies over the years by challenging them and they know they could face big fines if your data is in any way obtained questionably and, most companies with any credibility would recognise that, nowadays cold calling just inst worth it.

The other ones who a buggers for it are the NHS blood donation team. Emails, calls, asking the wife to go and get me out for my home office when I'm on a call, claiming it's urgent as they're desperate for blood and in my area. Wouldn't mind as I'm a regular donator and I know it's important, but if I haven't booked my next appointment already, can see the notes on my account that they buggered up the donation last time and caused me severe bruising, and they can see I've checked appointments on-line, then maybe just back off!

I don't answer my phone to any number I don't recognise. They can always leave a message which I can choose to ignore (or not). One time I got a voice message from my credit card company. I ignored the number that had phoned me and got back to them through a number I got in the banking app. Turn out it was genuine but you cannot be too careful.

Had SMS claiming to be the DWP saying I was entitled to cold weather payment.
As I worked for them until I retired 3 years ago I know it's a scam , unfortunately it will catch a few out

This happened to me once with a text and a call. Turned out to be legit and because I didn't respond they put a block on my card.
I was not amused.

I’m bloody glad I did. Some scanner was happily using my credit card number in Israel. Have to say the lady I talked to from cc fraud was top notch. They had already blocked these transactions cancelled my card and ordered a new one which came within a couple of days. It’s fun to main about banks but in this case the service was superb.

Had an email a few days ago from the HSBC telling me someone was going to call to discuss my business accounts....I left it and soon forgot. Yesterday I got what seems to be the usual shower of potential scammers doing thier usual phone ring round and some poor bastard got both barrels, together with insults and a suggestion he gets a better job. It then dawned on me when I received an email later that day saying their customer relations guy had called twice but he ' couldn't get through to me '. Well HSBC, he could but he sounded like all the other scammers I get on a daily basis.....so sort it out !!!!

This works with both scammers and people I owe money to (who can also fuck off, you will get it when i want to pay it)

ring ring...
Them...."Hi my name is Ruben i'm calling from MUFC finance, could you just confirm your identity please"
Me: Yes, sure...yes i have checked the mirror, it is me
Them...erm no, i just have to go through some checks
Me...You rang me on my number
Them ....yes but for security i need you to answer some security questions
Me...I told you i have checked the mirror, i am definitely me and I own this number
Them...Well if you don't answer my security questions i'm unable to proceed with this call
Me...You rang me, I didn't want to speak to you, you needed something from me so that isn't really bad for me is it?

I got this method when i desperately needed to pay my phone bill but had forgot my security question and i couldn't for the life of me give them the money i owed them.

Wait till AI has been sussed by the scammers, it'll be time to get back to using cash for everything.

Just play the Z cars music down the phone. Yes I’m a foc.
I like the idea of you sitting in the hall near the front door all day on a small stool next to the telephone table. Finger hovering over the play button on the small mono tape player balanced on your knee.
Waiting and waiting for that bastard phone to ring...
