Pep Guardiola - 2024/25

I think everyone knows we were far too complacent in the Summer with our very limited transfer activity. We were all crying out for another DM to limit the workload for Rodri and then our worst nightmare happens and he gets an ACL. Stones and Ake are very injury prone and the club were very naive/stupid not to strengthen the defence last Summer. Finally we have the ageing midfield and whilst Gonzalez is a welcome addition we still need some fresh legs and energy.

As long as we qualify for the CL and there is still a possibility of a FA Cup win, I can live with that. Vital this Summer we bring in a Kdb replacement and a new rb.
Yup agree on all of that....I was shouting from the roof tops about cover for Rodri.
I also said KDB was not the player that people thought he was anymore.....the signs were there even then

I think its nailed on we will go back for Cambiaso for starters.

I criticised him earlier in the season and a poster, a young lady I think, accused me of being racist.
He's not our worst signing but far from our best.
Has scored some crucial goals for us but there is something lacking.
Agreed but he is far from the worst signing we have ever made....even in the last few seasons let alone the Mansour era

I thought we did very well in the Jan window and I expect we will see plenty of activity in the summer..
Young exciting signings just what we needed and the game with Newcastle was so refreshing to watch, Khus, Gonzo, Marmoush playing with hunger , desire, pace and power and it rubbed off on the rest, can't wait for the summer window.

This is a great interview, he seems relaxed in conversation with Warnock rather than some two bit journalist looking for content.

He's started getting really likeable lately Warnock, seems like a proper eccentric some of the stories about him from Players who played under him are hilarious.

Should get him in as Assistant manager they look to have good chemistry!

Fair enough on the liverpool bit - however let me correct you on something...it wasnt made up...it was a genuine mistake - they were down really low that season but finished 5th - i have no problem admitting I got a fact wrong but I dont lie about stuff to prove to faceless people that I am right....

In regards to your first point -it was more a reference to others saying this.

My expectations on going into that game was that we would get beat and in the fashion we did.....I thought it would actually be worse.
Am i content with the performance...yes - its the level we are at at present - we have been there for large parts of the season - do i like it - no but i fully expected it as I can see the level we have been, We havent got the physicality to play at the level and intensity needed...
I fully expect similar vs Liverpool and even Aston Villa (the only difference is that we are at home and we might get a reaction from the defeat). We are competing at the level we are capable of...we cant go further at present with this squad of players some of whom are done - and its the main core of the groups that have driven us to those heights...
Stones - off after 5 mins? - all season this has been the case with him.
KDB - even when on the pitch he is nowhere near the levels needed and previous.
Gundo (and this is on Pep and Txixi) has fallen as far as KDB,
Foden - dropped off a cliff (something outside of football is going on - same as Grealish)
No Rodri (we know)
Bernardo - fallen off a cliff - he is knackered either short term and potentially long term
No Haaland -
Ake is also fucked you can see it in how he is running (or struggling to)
Walker gone

Any team in that situation missing those players struggles. All of them at the peak get into nealry ever team in world football
Rodri starts for Madrid and any other team in the world
Walker in peak form starts for 99% of other teams in world football
Stones does as Walker does
KDB starts for any team in the world
Haaland does start for 99% of teams -maybe only madrid as they have Mbappe - but they wanted him
Bernado in peak form starts for 95% of teams (maybe not Madrid) but certainly Barca and any team in the prem league
foden starts in peak form for 95% of teams in world football

All of these players are either done completely (KDB, Gundo, Walker, Stones, Ake) or werent available (Haaland and KDB) or for unknown reasons form has gone completely (Foden)

Pep cannot do anything about it at present - he knows it. Unless you play the young lads....and that is a huge risk

I said in October we would struggle to get top 4 and I was shouted down by the vast majoirty on here...I could see what was happening with the players and it want a reaction to losing rodri. I also said I didnt think there was anything that Pep could do about it even back then as the problem was bigger than Rodri.

I said last summer we needed to replace KDB and got the same reaction so I get the frustration but I also accept the reality of it that cycles comes to an end and it will take time to come back
The majority of your points further my views on Pep this season though... if you (as just a fan) can see we don't have the players or physicality why can't Pep? Are you saying it's beyond him to play or develop a system that mitigates our frailties? And play to the strengths of those he has available, even if just until the end of the season to ensure we get top 4 and make a rebuild much easier.

I do agree with you on the players mentioned and its clear to see, but he's still persisting with them and absolutely nothing is changing? He could tweak something tactically but he's chosen not to. Instead of being the usual two or three steps ahead of other managers he now looks two or three behind.

It also has to be asked why its been allowed to get to this stage with so many of our core squad coming to the end at once? Where was the forward planning?

Just watch the pre match press conferences after the embargoes, Pep is a very different character in those, far more open and honest.

Pep and Colin interview

What a terrific interview.

Pep has a reverence for the history of the game, and for some of the great characters that have graced football. He genuinely loves Neil Warnock, and it's fantastic to see the camaraderie between the two of them.

I think with the players we have the system he ideally wants to play doesnt work...I also think he has tried to adapt it at times....we have certainly been more direct all season, but I think we know that this also creates more space between the 3 lines of players which actually makes transitions for the opponents more likely should they win the ball back...Pep also knows however we dont have the physicality in midfield to cope with this. .....neither however do we have the physicality to play high pressing and keeping your midfield back four and attack all in the opponents half which is what he ideally wants to do to keep possession - the loss of walker and Stones (particularly walker) is a huge issue here as they have the recovery pace to protect the huge space in behind that a high line creates (remember no system is perfect) -Losing Rodri is crucial to this as well as his reading of the game is phenominal -he is always at the break down of the ball -Kova, Gundo Rico, Bernardo - they just dont have that - all great players with great attributes but none of them are defensive minded (besides Rico who then doesnt have the physicality)

One question I would ask is why Pep instead of moving Rico inside to the middle to be that extra man in midfield, hasnt he tried Gvardiol to do this - the answer might be cause that sacrifices in some little way Gvardiols ability to attack - but I dont know and that is just a guess

He cant play to the strengths of the ones left as they cant reach those heights anymore - to put it bluntly - KDB, Gundo, Bernardo, Stones, Walker are all fucked.....they are completely finished.....Besides Bernardo dont see any of them being ever able to reach those levels again - not even close - especially Stones, Walker, Gundo, KDB.
There is no one else to play other than the academy kids.....he aint going to do that as it could have negative affects on their confidence.....look at the way the press are WILLING Khusonov to fail the other night....that gets to players..especially young ones.

KDB will go the the U.S - thats his level now - he aint going to a European team because he couldnt handle it..... (besides the pay is way better over there)....we may see the odd flourish from him but make no mistake - he is completely finished at this level.

Gundo will go the the Turkish league with Fenerbache or Galatasray - that says it all

Stones - either some team takes a huge risk on him or he sits out his contract with us next season and leaves on a free (which is fair enough - he has given everything)

Walker - we saw it with our very own eyes -Timo Werner rinsed him...he couldnt even get close!! His legs have gone and he is done - the Italian league is perfect for him - its a lot slower - plus then there is the lifestyle stuff. he has fucked himself over with.

Those players are the core of our midfield and defence when you add the continuous injuries to Dias, Akanji Rodri Ake (who for me as much as I like him is int he same boat as Stone)

S0 again - who else does he play.?...people keep going on about seeing Bernardo and Gundo in midfield toegther....or Bernardo and Kova or Rico in there as well - I should know as Im one of them BUT i dont think at present he can play in any other way - these are not a team that can sit deep and play in transitions (even though Pep is clearly at present trying to find a happy medium between his preferred way of playing and playing a somewhat more transition based game - ie our performance vs Newcastle)

Its not beyond him - I just think he knows it wont work either as I can even see the issues with it so Im damn sure he can. He has tweaked things here and there.
The forward planning as Ive said isnt just down to Pep - that is a failing of the entire club hierachy....Khaldoon, Pep and Txixi.

The real positive thing is that I believe they know they have made mistakes (systematic mistakes at a larger level) - they are in the process of rectifying this...But it wont happen in one summer transfer window...you cant replace KDB Bernrado, Gundo all in one go.......Who is available that we can do that with....Id love Wirtz but we are being told that aint happening....so if not him where do you look - its pretty limited....

The big picture is that Im afraid our cycle is at an end and we need to accept that...nothing is going to change before the end of the season because it cant - but he club knows it has to work hard in the summer. It maybe some time before we are anywhere near as dominant again or playing at the same level again as getting the level of player of KDB, Gundo Bernardo into one squad is going to be nigh on impossible- you have two unicorn players in there in KDB and Bernardo and Walker was a freak of nature as well. -

I agree with much of this. To regain former dominance, we need to be replacing not the current but the PRIME versions of Bernardo/Walker/KdB/Gundo/Stones/Merlin/Kovacic, etc. There isn’t a chance in hell of being able to do that in two, three, four or even five windows. Instead we’ll have to nurture the very good but not world class younger guys in our ranks and blend in one or two big signings.

We also need to review whether the system that served us brilliantly for years now needs to evolve. And also, I would say, seriously consider whether the coaching support staff are earning their corn. Everyone has sussed us, knows our weak points and looks better drilled. We’re piss easy to score against and many of our set pieces are pathetic.

All this will probably take us beyond the Pep era, IMO.

It’s not the end of the world. Nobody rules the roost for ever. While we’re getting our shit together again, we should defo qualify for Europe this year and at least be in a position to challenge for the title next year. Serial title winners again? I hope so but I’m not sure.

Yes there has to be real long term (beyond Pep) planning and id be suprised with a club that is normally ran so professionally if there isnt

But mid term we do need to replace those players with quality....there are different levels however....when I am seeing TH talk about the likes of Xavi Simons and Morgan Gibbs White - it does not fill me full of confidence however....MGW strikes me as a Nunes/Phillips level transfer - one that will ultimately be proved a mistake ( I said it about Grealish at the time as well and look at that has turned out - a real failure of a transfer if we are being honest).
Xavi Simons seems flakey for want of a better word....though the last two major signings (Marmoush and Khusonov) are great IMHO (no idea about Reis yet) - so as always its hit and miss....

but losing KDB and Gundo and replacing them with MGW and Xavi Simons - ouch! That is some fall!

Pep and Colin interview

Really enjoyed this. I like seeing the coaches interview each other and Pep looked so chill.

Did NOT enjoy Pep being asked about Jamie Carraghers utterly stupid comment about Haaland (did he really say that?!). How insulting and pathetic of Sky.

Listening to his interview with Warnock, I’m intrigued to see how Guardiola reconciles learning from this year’s experience with not losing players, i.e. not picking a player for either the team or bench. Going to be an interesting challenge next season.
