Vat on Independent school fees?

While VAT is quite an annoying tax, the truth is that the alternative would be other taxes. You could, for example, put 10p on income tax and reduce VAT significantly. One beauty of VAT is that, unlike IT, it is quite hard to evade.
i dislike VAT because it disproportionally affects the poor

A half-relative has won a scholarship at a private school through their cricket academy. There is no way his family could afford the fees but he has potential to become a county championship cricketer and then, who knows? Some private schools also specialise on children with special needs, often this doesn’t just mean they have learning difficulties but because they have behavioural conditions that can disrupt lessons and make life difficult for state primary and secondary school teachers. If these places close of become unaffordable, it will make life even more difficult for stressed teachers and other pupils. It is not a one size fits all situation, but the speed with which this VAT imposition along with NI increases for employers seems plain wrong. I can see both sides, but just thought it should have been given more time to think things through, but I know some will disagree because they think all private schools are full of posh kids.

I think the point you raise is a fair one. Should have been phased on over a couple of years imo.

There should probably be an exemption for specialist SEND private schools, as long as it doesn't provide a loophole that could be exploited by all private schools.

As to cricket, it's ridiculous that within a generation it's become almost a preserve of private education.

when I went to school we had a playing field with 4 football pitches and a cricket pitch as did other schools and we had inter-school matches in both sports. The two schools I am thinking of are no housing estates.

The school my kids went to became an academy specialising in sports. Prior to that it was often utilised by teams visiting Boro as a base to train and stay as there is a posh hotel next door. When it became and academy the school building was demolished and rebuilt with a capacity of 75% of the previous building and half the sports field was sold off - I am told they have very good archery and ping-pong tuition .......

I guess the government feel the case hasn’t gone well given they have now asked the court to rule as inadmissible the NAO report on the state of the SEN education system - that the government themselves have promised reform from - and raised no objections since the case was brought against them and, indeed, heard in court.

Shithousery of the highest order. Back to the high court tomorrow to hear the governments case.

Well, it certainly made me think … which thick **** would peddle that shit. And which **** would buy it.

Probably the same thick cunts who believe that slapping VAT on private schools will bring some sort of equality or that there is an inherent equality in the state system.

The real sleight of hand here is folk like Starmer sends his kid to a very nice state school that is every bit as good as a private school, if not better. How do you give yourself the best chance to get in to that school? Living in the catchment area. House prices, unsurprisingly, are expensive - so instead of spending money on private school fees they spend it on expensive mortgages. The difference being when you pay private school fees that’s money out of your door - when you use it to buy an expensive house you retain the value and get richer. Remind me who are the real villains here?

Tony Benn moved into the catchment area of an LA school whose head was Rhodes Boyson. Holland Park comprehensive had a great reputation and Benn sent his children there. His wife, who inherited a fortune, paid for the house.

I see no reason why a business such as a private school should have a VAT exemption on its business income. Other than it benefits those who send their kids to private schools and who, by sheer coincidence, also decide tax laws.

Why should a private business be vat exempt?
Asking for us 'thickos' like....

It’s a professional fee. I’m not sure how else it could be properly characterised. Teachers are professionals and like lawyers and accountants the service they provide and the institution that provides it should be subject to VAT, given, as you say, it’s a private business.

Money will always ensure those with the most “buy” the best education and opportunities, people who send their kids to private school are probably just a bit more upfront about it.

VAT is really a side show of a few bones to the left of the party. I’d be quite happy to see the government get a bloody nose in the courts on this as I don’t like the policy but I don’t have a dog in this fight so….

Even if I wasn’t principle opposed to it, the amount it raises will do nothing for the deep inequalities in the current system. That requires real change and investment, neither of which is [currently] forthcoming.

I suspect when you start off by calling people "thick cunts", you aren't going to get the considered response you might have hoped for.

Whom did I call a thick ****? For anyone to have considered my post was directed at them they would have to consider themselves both thick and a ****.

I wouldn’t dream to suggest any individual on here was both those things.
