Running thread

Shin splits are horrible, i had them for a while, weirdly went after a 5k run once.

I'm planning to take it very easy, if i drop out, i drop out. I just want to be there, ive trained so hard, signed up for it, got 2 nights hotel booked, raised money etc.

Thought of sitting at home is awful.
Like everyone has said be careful you don’t want to seriously damage yourself, slow and steady and see how it goes. If it hurts to sit down, will take a massive effort to get round! Where is the marathon?

#2 has been studied and found to be very good for mental health.

However, it's mainly #1 for me. There's no way my brain could handle running for an hour with nothing to distract me. I listen to podcasts (language learning; health...) and music (I'm always compiling playlists of my favorite running tracks).

If I didn't have these things in my ears, I couldn't be a runner.
I know what you mean on that. My only issue is it depends on where I run. If I can find quiet fields away from traffic noise, headphones are worth it. If it’s anywhere on pavements/roads the traffic noise, and so the level I have to set the volume at to hear it properly, makes it a non-starter for me.

I've decided to create a YouTube channel in order to give me a bit of focus with my running, to get me motivated and to hopefully support my mental health whilst giving some tips based on what I've learnt over 30 years (on and off!) of running.

I'll try and get the odd video on there, covering different aspects of running and prep for distance events etc.

Let me know if you'd like me to have a go at covering any particular topics.

Good luck with it mate, no doubt it will be ace

Brighton Marathon 5:30

By far my slowest ever, but still happy to have done it.
Been on antibiotics for kidney infection, lower back pain for last month so have not trained at all recently - got to 13/14 miles and was cramping up both legs.
Sat in shade to book a uber but was no service- so managed to walk/jog the rest of the Marathon, it was brutal.

I've been struggling recently with health issues, and from past experience suspected my iron levels were down again. I self-tested, and this was confirmed.

About four weeks ago I had my bloods tested and my GP put me on folic acid supplements. These had no effect, so I bought some 210mg ferrous sulphate (iron) tabs which I've been on for the last week. I can already see the difference.

I've done 4 x 5kms this week, in 31:42, 37:30, 32:11 and 31:31. The difference is in the breathing. Iron carries Oxygen around the body, and without it, you can feel lethargic and out of breath.

My aims now are to get back to 30 minute 5ks, and extend to possibly a 10km in the next few weeks. Then hopefully a 16k around Derwentwater when I go on holiday to Keswick in July.

Lovely to start tapering for the Marathon this week. Who else is running it?

A friend has picked up an injury (after weeks of training) and can no longer run it... if anyone wants a bib hers is going. :')

You running Manchester?

I've been watching friends and family go through the marathon training block, the long runs alone are making me think I'm crazy for entering my 2nd marathon in October, such hard work for 1 day! Happy in my 5k, 10k, HM blocks at the moment.

I'm supposed to go and spectate them at Manchester, but I want to get to the semi-final as well, decisions to make. I could do both if I don't stay to the end of the race, bit hectic though.

No mara for me this time round, suffered from a severe case of the "can't be arsed" at the start of the year and haven't put in the training, I do have an entry for Manchester and the bib turned up today, but I'm 99.9% sure I'm going to skip this one(although never say never)
I've ran 18 marathons in the last five years and it does seem weird not having one this year, but hopefully the rest will do me good

Great effort under the circumstances mate

I'm suffering from low iron count, linked to my arthritis and now fibromyalgia (told 2 weeks ago)

I got rejected to give blood 3 weeks ago for a very low iron count. which was strange as never had that issue, would of been my 30th time.

youll fget there !

That sounds seriously punishing mate but it's a spectacular achievement to have made it in those circumstances.

Yeah, my low iron levels came after 59 years with presumably (because I never had any symptoms before) good iron levels.

They said it was a dietary issue, but this hadn't changed, and I eat pretty much the same as my wife, who doesn't have low iron levels. They did tests at both ends and found no reason.

So it's a bit of a mystery, but the pills are improving my breathlessness. Got to get my legs back to strength now. I'm loving running in the good weather though.

Wishing you all the best with your fibromyalgia. I looked it up, and it doesn't sound pleasant.

thanks.. I've only just turned 37 and last few years have been a hell hole for me. But still keep running as it helps my headspace.

Did you get normal over the counter iron tablets or something in particular

Oh yeah, the NHS won't give me anything to help other than Methotrexate which I've been on for 2 years.

There is a medication they believe will help me, I've researched it, but they won't give it me. My condition needs to worsten before they consider.

At my wits end.

I got my iron tablets over the internet - Ferrous Sulphate, 210mg x 84 tablets. Less than £10 for three packs including delivery. Internet is much cheaper than Amazon.
