Thanks mate, did the Manchester to Liverpool ultra, 50 miler, finished in 7.51 and 49th place, 5th in age category, pretty pleased with that for my first go at the big boy miles

That is a brilliant time. Congratulations. What trainers did you go for?

It’s hard to know with trail runs, on rock hard, dried out soil, what to wear.

I had firm soil packed ground, wooded areas, grass and my feet felt a bit beaten up afterwards. Went with the Nike trail Pegasus which is a hybrid shoes but still unsure if that was the right choice.

Had a mare with my shoe choice, did the first 32mile in puma deviate nitro elite 3 which was all gravy, got the Mrs to meet me at mile 32 with a pair of metaspeeds that I hadn't used for ages, fucked if I know why I thought that would be a good idea, it wasn't, ran about 200m and realised my error, was in 20th position at that stage, last 18 miles were a lot tougher than they could have been.
What's the peg trails like nowadays? I was a big fan of the early ones but they seemed to go a bit shit after them

Hope everyone ran well yesterday.

Ran the Garmin Trail Half yesterday and scraped a top ten finish. Ridiculously hot out there and so it was a proper challenging.

After years of running, and struggling, I found a really good aid to help with the heat. Wore a buff around my neck for the first time (outside winter) and was soaking it with cold water at every aid station and in exposed areas placing it over my forehead. Really helped.

Great advice above by @Stuuuuuu and @gaz76. I’m a proper sweater during exercise and lose a huge amount of water and salts so I always have a drink with electrolytes and also, when racing, take salt tablets with me or electrolyte gels.

Carry them in a flip belt (around my waist, which you don’t really notice when running.
I wear one on almost every long run and similarly soak it in water before heading out the door when it's hot. I also use the salt chews ( think were recommended on here). I don't like the gels and find the chews make me sip more water when I might not have

Proper tough do yesterday... I did not make my goal of 3:59:59. Wasn't even close. I was well ahead of pace at Altrincham but entered the pain cave as I ran past the half way mark.

Went out for drinks with my running club mates after, and out of roughly 40 of us, only 2 actually hit their target times. I would honestly say it was the toughest conditions I've ever raced in.
Great effort mate

Manchester marathon yesterday, finished in 3.27 which I'm happy enough with, yesterday was not a day for PB chasing, knew that after about 5km, happy to get round in one piece especially after last week's 50 mile ultra!!
Fantastic mate

Hello Manchester, (k gokmen from istanbul )
11th July Oasis at Manchester, i bought my ticket today; hopefully coming back to my second home :))
just 2 3 days i will stay (again) like in 2000 21th july wembley Oasisgig. I dont like long trips.

Anyway, when I arrive, I’d like to do a short run on a course or in a park in Manchester. I don’t want to say I’ve never trained in Manchester in my life. I’ll message you before I come, and maybe you can recommend me a route. Hopefully, we’ll meet when I’m there.

cheers, have a great week

Hi mate, depending on where your staying there will be a parkrun at 9am on the Saturday morning close by, they are a 5k and usually have a good crowd at them, if your looking for something a bit longer let us know and I will find a race for you

hi mate, i will come on thursday probably, friday will see Oasis, then fly back on saturday, or sunday. So, that plan, runnin on saturday, sounds good.

Even though I’ll probably have a hangover, I’ll still go out for a run on Saturday — it would be a good way to check out the area and have a little memory run at the park. It would be nice. I’ll message you before I come, and you can tell me the location.
I’ll definitely come back properly prepared for a race in Manchester later on. I’ll write to you about that in the future as well. Thanks again!

How did you get on with the Peg Trails? I loved the Pegasus 36 Trail but wasn't as keen on the Pegasus Trail 4.

I've got a 100km event in the Peak District at the end of June and I have no idea what I'm going to wear. It's going to be more of a jog/hike/crawl so I want something cushioned. Won't be the most technical of trails and, depending on the weather, should be quite a dry route with some pebbled paths so don't need massive lugs.

I've been looking at the Hoka Speedgoats and Kilian Jornet's Nnormal brand amongst others but there are so many options out there!

Hi again,
Since I’m already here, let me share some information about the race I participated in — maybe someone might be interested.

As a runner who’s been wanting to transition into triathlon for a long time — like I wrote here earlier this year — I completed my first triathlon on April 13th in Bodrum. It was a really well-organized event, by the way — I highly recommend it.
I just wanted to test myself, so I swam slowly, stayed out of the crowded pack, and didn’t push at all. I bought a cheap bike for now — it even had regular pedals, and I rode it wearing my running shoes.
I had done a lot of bike training and my legs are really strong. It was funny to pass people one by one on the uphills, only to see them fly past me on the downhills — cheap bikes clearly don’t cut it!
I'm planning to seriously prepare for Ironman Belek in November, so I’ll definitely upgrade my bike before then because I want to go into that race competitively — at least for myself.
Oh, and my bike didn’t even have a bottle holder! After swimming 1.2 km, there was a 60 km bike segment. I thought there would be water handed out along the route, but there wasn’t! :))
Honestly, I didn’t even feel thirsty. But after getting off the bike, there was a 15 km trail run, and for the first time in my life, my legs started cramping badly — I couldn’t run properly.
For the first 6 km, I ran in pain. Luckily, at the 3 km mark, there was an aid station where I had some isotonic drinks, and after a while my legs loosened up. It was an interesting experience.
At 45 years old, I finally learned what real cramps feel like! So what’s the lesson? You really do need to drink water while biking. :)
Anyway, it was a truly amazing event and route. Check out the videos... Everyone should come next year. I’m definitely coming back — and this time, competitively!
(ai translated that one, my english is not that good, an ai saves time :)) )

Agree on the so many options mate, it's a minefield with the amount of shoes available nowadays.
Think Nike are on a big slide, they not had a good shoe for a few years now, the new vaporfly are apparently shite as well.
The trails in the peaks "should" be pretty hard at that time of year so you would probably get away with a set of road shoes, the 50 miler I did was mostly trail and pretty much everyone was in road shoes

Think it was a similar story for most people in that heat on Sunday. My training had gone really well and I'd prepared for everything except the hot weather. I was hoping to get sub 3:45 and was doing great until 30K. However it psychologically broke me when the 3:45 pacer passed me at 36K. Still managed to hit my B Goal and came in at 3:51, which was a 6 minute PB. Without doubt the toughest race I've ever done and a big learning curve.

:))) yes exactly. but.... If you didn’t overdo it too much last night, then yes, it feels fine. But there’s one point — if you’ve crossed that line, it can get dangerous. I had to play a match a couple of times in my twenties (and early thirties) in that condition, and it was terrible and risky. :)) but rınning is safe, if you feel bad, you just can stop. not like a football game that you can not quit while your friends are playing :((

Excellent effort. Unless you have the ability to train in heat during the build up, it's going to punish people and I don't think going out slower would make much difference because at some point it's going to bite. All about hydration and again, unless you can simulate the heat in training it's all a bit of an experiment. To get a PB by 6mins and only be the same time away from your target time is impressive.

I know plenty who did London and ended up a good 15-30 minutes away from where they hoped/planned to be.

I did 25km there last year and conditions were perfect but that might not be the case this time round. It looks warm over there at the minute so you might run out of sun by June and it'll be pissing it down!

Agree about Nike. My last few pairs have been Puma and I've just bought a pair of Adidas SL2s that I'm liking for daily use. How did your new Pumas perform at the weekend?

Yep the pumas are great, I've been on the puma elite bus since the first ones, ran my marathon PB in the elite 1 (3hrs 14 fucking seconds!!!)
Might be a bit early for a yep go buy them kind of review on the fast r elite, but yep they are springy and light, although I realised after a few km on Sunday it was probably a daft decision to run a new untried pair straight out of the box, should really have waited until I knew how to get the best out of them foot strike wise and all that razzle dazzle, don't get me wrong they kept me going and my legs are brand new after the mara, but I doubt I would try that kind of gamble again, they do really need a good mid/front foot strike as I found in the later miles when my form went a bit and I dropped a few heel strikes which was not pretty as there's hardly anything at the back of the shoe, still mega excited about what's to come from them though

Good review. They definitely sound like fun!
