North Stand Construction Discussion

I thought they were to stabilise the structure in high winds

Unless it's in the PA and the fins/sails are specifically stated as doing that, I don't think they are. There are numerous hotel towers build and proposed above 20 stories in the city centre that don't have any cladding fins/sails to stabilise them. A 9 storey hotel wouldn't need fins/sails to stabilise it. Certainly not against the winds we get in Manchester.

Only joking, but do you think it might be something to do with the wind whistling around the development.

Going back to the hotel fins/sails again. Arrrgh! No!! :-)

Aren't they a lot of expense and faff for nothing?

The exterior of the hotel could have been finished off in brick or in plain coloured cladding, like most hotels are.

There already seems to be issues with the fins/sails, their design, build quality, and reliability to cope with the harsh and changeable Manchester weather.

I think the fins/sails are an architects(Populous) folly, that City have gone along with.
Not necessarily. Depends on the systems, products and detail, but often can well be cheaper to go with a basic mass curtain walling system like they have, and then stick some decorative fins to disguise that, then to go with what you suggest particularly at such scale to get it looking right.

Remember, there is also the office element here, and the two go hand in hand. And offices lend themselves to glazed systems a lot more. Plus, given the cladding of the stand etc, they would have had to put more work into it to stop it looking at odds with the stand.

I can't say with any real certainty whether the facades with the sails they have gone with would have costed more or less than others you suggest without defining them a bit more. But I can say with confidence that they are 'easier' than the others.

That first image is remarkably similar to the “mock up “ apart from :-

A) it’s all white

&

B) it’s on a white background

As many have stated , dark grey or similar would be much better !
Think a few changes were made from the original application

Didn’t really tell us anything new , did it !
Not sure what more the club can do, we have the best of all worlds, people walking around taking videos, constant drone updates, we are spoilt, although with most of the main building work coming to an end this spring/summer we may get little info on the internal builds.

First thing you ask for is the Programme and is it delivering against it.

Once this is done, that can be done, and oh those yellow things. Not one date mentioned.
