The Squad planning thread

Easiest way is barely or not playing the old guard during the CWC. 1 way was buying new players so the current ones would know it’s hard to get game time now.
It’s World Cup year. If Chelsea can sell/ loan 14 players - city should be able to do the same with 6-10 players. Especially when we heading into a new direction.


During Portugal vs Germany I didn’t get what Bernardo was doing. Yeah he played deep but even then he barely played forward passes which was weird in my eyes. Need to play the new players to start to play quicker. Hopefully Viana somehow forces Pep to by giving him the players he needs and also selling/ loaning the ones the club doesn’t see as a part anymore.

It’s a different challenge. He’ll still be hugely dependent on Rodri and Bernardo, as well as anyone else who remains, but with so many young players and new players, he’ll need to adapt to ensure that they’re all playing regularly and all in form. That should be where Viana and the backroom challenge him, too.

Bernardo’s job was to drop deeper and thus pull Germany’s one-on-one system out of shape, thus freeing more space for others; Guardiola asked him to do similar for us in certain games last year. In those circumstances, it’s less about what you do with the ball and more about what you do with the space, but to be able to do it at that level you need phenomenal football intelligence. He’s seeing and playing a moving chessboard from about five foot nothing.
 
One solution to fit a new foreign RB or one of the young lads (Savinho, Khusanov, Echeverri, Reis, Ba) into our CL squad free list is for Gundo to step out and make way as PL only, probably as player/coach:

Ederson;
Manuel Akanji, Rúben Dias, Joško Gvardiol, Rayan Aït-Nouri;
Phil Foden, Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders;
Omar Marmoush, Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki:

Stefan Ortega,
Rico Lewis, John Stones, Nathan Aké, Nico O'Reilly;
Matheus Nunes, Nico Gonzáles, İlkay Gündoğan;
Bernardo Silva, Oscar Bobb, Jérémy Doku.

+ new FB/foreign U21 + Mateo Kovačić (when fit) & Keeper 3.

This would be for the CL Group stage - injuries will probably provide vacancies in the free list after that.
 
Is there any interest from other clubs in our players.
Lots of posters saying 6 to 10 players might be leaving but doesn't seem to be any offers for our players.

Tbf got till September 1st to get rid of said players, that's essentially 3 full months

Remember that any other season the window would still be closed, it's only open because the CWC

Feel pretty confident we can shift 6-10 players, more a question of who those be

Walker and Grealish won't ever play for us again

Can see clubs being interested in Bernardo, Gundo, Kovacic, Ederson, Ortega, Akanji

Someone could take a punt on the fitness of Ake or Stones

McAtee (and Doyle) will attract interest for a bottom half prem team who will hope they can find the next Palmer

Potential loan opportunities for O'Reilly, Echeverri, Reis (and Khusanov?) etc.

Not gonna get great fees, but think we'll see some movement, hopefully most on a permanent basis

Assuming we sign the three rumoured players. Even once DeBruyne, Walker, Grealish, Carson, Stones, McAtee all got their moves sorted, we would still be 3 players over that we couldn't register. We need to move on NHG players.

Bernardo and Gundogan have to leave but might be just me

20 NHG for CL, although Reis and Echeverri probably wouldn't cry if they get left out of the squad so really 18

So technically only need to sell 2 to allow another to be registered for the CL, and we also have a spot open for the Prem

Savinho no longer counts as u21 for PL.

Immaterial anyway, as the club have always built the squad to the CL limits. As long as we have been in it at least.

I think after the club World Cup
I also think it may be quite brutal. I see a few players being told their time is up
We’re not messing about in our signings and as such that means players need to leave
